Colombian men arrested for suspected housebreaking

SINGAPORE - Three Colombian men suspected of breaking into two private houses have been arrested. They are alleged to have taken more than $300,000 and jewellery from a terrace house in Yunnan Crescent, after breaking in through a rear window.

Police have arrested three Colombian men, aged between 26 to 28 years, who are believed to be involved in several cases of housebreaking and thefts in the Yunnan private residential estate.

On March 12, 2013, police received a report of a case of break-in and theft committed at a terrace house in the Yunnan private residential estate at approximately 10am.

Various currencies amounting to over S$300,000 and an assortment of jewellery were found to be missing.

Within 5 hours of the report, officers conducted an operation resulting in the arrest of the three suspects at a chalet along East Coast Road on the same day at approximately 3pm.

Various currencies, including S$284,000 and US$25,000 (S$31,140), jewellery, seven mobile phones and various items found in the suspects' possession were seized.

The suspects are also believed to be involved in a similar case which occurred at the Westwood private residential estate.

The suspects will be charged in court for the offence of housebreaking by night with common intention, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term of not less than 2 years and not more than 14 years.

 

Turkish man and Iranian woman arrested for theft

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a Turkish man aged 23 and an Iranian woman aged 20 respectively, for their suspected involvement in a case of theft by "sleight of hand."

On Mar 2 at about 10.05pm, a 40-year-old male victim was approached by an unknown couple along Eu Tong Sen Street who requested to see some Chinese currency Reminbi.

The victim took some notes from his wallet to show to them. He also handed RMB100 to one of the suspects, which was promptly returned. All of a sudden, the male suspect snatched the victim's Singapore notes from the victim's wallet with a quick show of hands.

The victim quickly grabbed his money back. Sensing something amiss, he started counting his notes, whereupon the suspects left the scene. A few minutes later, the victim realised that SGD300 was missing from his original stack of 7 pieces of SGD100 notes. Police were then alerted to the case.

Following extensive enquiries and follow-up investigations, officers managed to establish the identities of the suspects. On March 14 at about 11.13 pm, the duo were arrested in the vicinity of Lorong 19 Geylang.

The suspects will be charged in court for the offence of theft with common intention, which carries a maximum jail term of three years imprisonment, or with fine or both.

A Malaysian man was fined $1,000 on Friday for mischief by damaging two pieces of brand new lingerie.

Lee Meng Xiang, 23, then a casino croupier, pleaded guilty to the offence at Tangs department store in VivoCity at Harbourfront Walk on Jan 26.

A magistrate's court heard that the store's security officer saw Lee taking two pieces of Triumph lingerie from the women's section and walking into a male fitting room.

About 10 minutes later, Lee walked out without the items.

SINGAPORE - Forty people were arrested in a joint operation at Joo Chiat and Geylang public entertainment outlets last night.

The joint operation comprised of officers from Bedok Police Division, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Enforcement checks were carried out at entertainment outlets, coffeeshops and food outlets located along Joo Chiat Road and Geylang. The arrested suspects, 40 female foreigners aged between 19 and 39, were arrested for unlawful employment offences.

The police and SCDF also conducted checks at coffeeshops and food outlets at Joo Chiat Road and Geylang.

Police officers issued summons to four coffeeshops for infringement of liquor licences. SCDF detected fire safety violations at three public entertainment outlets and a coffeeshop, and will be following up on the necessary actions.

This is part of an ongoing law enforcement effort to clamp down on unlawful activities at entertainment outlets, coffeeshops and food outlets, and serves as a warning that those who conduct such illicit activities will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.

Investigation against all the suspects are ongoing.

Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) How Kwang Hwee, commended the officers for their professionalism and excellent teamwork which led to a successful operation.

DAC How said: "The Police will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies in our relentless effort to clamp down on illegal activities at public entertainment outlets".

SINGAPORE: A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to six weeks' jail for stealing a bag from a passenger during a SilkAir flight from Cambodia to Singapore.

Wang Liwu, a Chinese national, pleaded guilty to the offence, committed on 18 January.

A cabin crew saw him behaving suspiciously, such as watching passengers as they were putting their belongings in the overhead compartments.

Shortly after the flight left Phnom Penh, Wang removed a laptop bag belonging to a 61-year-old man from an overhead compartment.

An airline staff saw him taking something out of the bag and putting the item in his left pocket.

However, when the plane landed in Singapore, Wang was not carrying the laptop bag.

The airline staff informed the flight captain, who then alerted airport police.

Wang was later questioned and arrested.

Maid jailed 8 months for theft from employer and for other offences

A Filipino maid was jailed for eight months on Monday for stealing from her employer among other offences.

Dela Cuadra Ligaya Soriano, 36, who faced 20 charges, admitted to two counts of theft and one each of converting and removing the benefits of her crime. The rest were taken into consideration during her sentencing.

A district court heard earlier that she was cleaning the bottom corner of a wardrobe at her employer's flat in Woodleigh Close last June when she accidentally pulled one of the drawers and found some jewellery. She was tempted to steal the items then but did not do so.

A few weeks later, she decided to steal the items in the drawer. She recalled that her employer, Ms Melanie Lim May Ling, 39, had entrusted a bunch of keys to her to check for letters. She then took the keys from Ms Lim's handbag without her knowledge. She opened the locked drawer with one of the keys and stole a 100g gold bar worth $5,000. She subsequently sold it to a pawn shop, Valuemax Retail for $6,150.

Mobile phone thief arrested

Police have arrested a 22-year-old foreign worker believed to be responsible for a series of mobile phone thefts committed in a foreign workers' dormitory along Kranji Road.

From February to mid-March this year, several cases of theft of mobile phones were reported.

Following the reports, officers from Jurong Police Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and follow-up investigations in a bid to apprehend the suspect.

On March 19 at about 4.30pm, the officers arrested the suspect at his workplace located at King's Road.

Preliminary investigations indicate that he is believed to be responsible for at least three cases reported at the said dormitory.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Friday for theft. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to seven years or be liable to a fine.

Woman who fell from 3rd storey of Circuit Rd block arrested for immigration offences

A Vietnamese woman fell from the third storey of Block 69 Circuit Road at about 7.20am today (Mar 19). She was subsequently arrested by the Police for immigration offences.

STOMPer Erick, who lives on the ground floor of the block, said that he heard a loud thud while he was in his flat.

He went out of his flat and saw the woman lying at the foot of the block, bleeding from her head but conscious.

He said:

"A Vietnamese girl fell from the third storey of Block 69 at about 7:20am today."

Erick said he was not sure what had caused the woman to fall. He said police officers arrived soon after.

The STOMPer added:

"She was attended to and sent to hospital in 15 minutes.

"Kudos to efficient response by the Singapore Police Force.

A spokesperson for the Singapore Police Force said:

"Police received a call at 5.50am requesting for assistance at Block 69 Circuit Road.

"Upon arrival, a woman was found lying at the foot of the block at the location.

"She was conveyed to Changi General Hospital and is in stable condition.

"She was subsequently arrested for immigration offences."

A man, who placed a spy camera inside a shampoo rack of a toilet to video record a fellow tenant bathing, was jailed for three weeks on Thursday.

Accounts executive Chan Chee Yoong, 42, a Malaysian and a Singapore permanent resident, admitted to intruding into the privacy of the then 24-year-old woman at a flat in Balestier on May 28, 2011. A magistrate's court heard that Chan had rented a room at the flat while the victim was renting a room which she shared with her boyfriend.

While in the shower, the victim spotted a black coloured device inside the shampoo rack. The woman, who had seen the device before, sensed something amiss and decided to take it back to her room to show to her boyfriend.

Just then, Chan came over and asked her for the device but she refused to hand it to him. A minor dispute ensued and the landlord was called in. Chan confessed that the device was actually a concealed video camera recording device, also known as a spy camera.

11 foreign women caught for suspected vice

Indian national convicted for using unlicensed employment agent

SINGAPORE: A 23-year-old Indian national has become the first employer to be convicted for using an unlicensed employment agent to hire a foreigner.

In February 2011, Sadh Aakash Raman engaged Balaguru S/O Amirthalingam to submit a work pass application for the foreigner, who is his uncle, to be hired as a general manager.

Sadh, the director of Times Supermarket, agreed to pay Balaguru $6,000 in agent fees once the application was approved by the manpower ministry.

He also gave his SingPass details to the unlicensed employment agent to submit the application.

Sadh pleaded guilty to one charge of engaging the services of an unlicensed employment agent.

He was also convicted of one charge of illegally employing a foreigner without a valid work pass.

Another three illegal employment charges against him were taken into consideration for the purposes of sentencing.

In total, Sadh was fined $4,500 and will have to spend 18 days in jail if he can't pay the fine.

This is the first time the Ministry of Manpower successfully prosecuted an employer for such an offence, since the revised Employment Agencies Act came into effect in April 2011.

In 2012, six employers were offered composition for similar offences.

SINGAPORE: A 31-year-old driver and a 39-year-old Chinese national have been arrested for immigration offences.

A statement by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said its officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint directed a departing Malaysia-registered car for a thorough check on Saturday.

The Malaysian driver appeared nervous and he was asked to step out of the car as ICA officers examined his vehicle. When the car boot was opened, officers found a man crouching inside.

Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane, while the penalties for illegal departure is a fine of up to S$2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Colombian jailed for breaking into 16 homes and stealing $650k in cash and valuables

A Colombian had heard from an acquaintance how easy it was to make "good money" through housebreaking in Singapore.

Foranda Arias Fredy, 43, flew here on July 12 last year with another Columbian - known to him only as Maurisio - to do just that.

In a district court on Monday, Fredy pleaded guilty to breaking into 16 homes on his two trips here and stealing nearly $650,000 in cash and valuables.

He also admitted to making a false declaration to the immigration authorities on his second trip in October, that he had not been to Singapore using a passport under a different name.

$87k drugs found on Malaysian rider at Woodlands Checkpoint

SINGAPORE - Drugs with an estimated value of $87,000 were seized from a Malaysian motorcyclist at Woodlands Checkpoint on Saturday morning.

In total, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers seized drugs consisting of 745 grams of heroin and 279 grams of cannabis from the 19-year-old man.

CNB officers had spotted a missing screw on the fuel tank of the motorcycle during a search at the checkpoint. 745 grammes of heroin was found in two black bundles hidden under the fuel tank, while 279 grammes of cannabis was found in a third bundle.

The man was arrested on the spot.

He is now under investigations for suspected drug importation, and if convicted, may face the death penalty.

 

Foreman jailed 2 months for throwing TV, injuring a worker in process

A foreman who threw a 14-inch television at a construction worker injuring the worker's thigh was jailed for two months on Monday.

A district court heard at about midnight on March 10 this year, Xu Guang Quan, 40, was upset when other workers shouted and asked him why he switched off the electricity to the dormitory in Punggol.

Xu was then on the second storey. Instead of explaining that he was acting on instructions as the generator was going to be replaced, he threw the television set and a dustbin to the ground floor in anger.

Construction worker Appadurai Nagarajan, 30, was able to evade the dustbin but not the television which hit him on the thigh. He was treated for a swollen thigh at Changi General Hospital.

Xu pleaded guilty to causing hurt by doing a rash act that could endanger life. The Chinese national asked that only a fine be imposed.

Speaking through the Mandarin interpreter, he said that if he was sent back to China, his wife would no longer be afford the costs of the treatment for her heart ailment.

He added that he was "under a lot of pressure then".

A Chinese national who came here equipped to cheat Singaporeans was jailed for a year and six months on Tuesday.

Xiong Jianyuan, 41, brought in fake gold ingots and statues as well as 14 fragments of real gold, a district court head.

He and accomplice Yang Yanqun, 45, arrived here on Dec 25 last year and checked into a Geylang hotel. Some days later, Yang phoned retiree Yong Heong Seng, 77, pretending to be a distant relative from Xiamen city in China.

On Jan 6, the duo met him at a food centre in Bishan. The two men lied that they had been working here for several years and had unearthed some gold items at a construction site. They asked Mr Yong if he wanted to buy them.

Woman caught hiding drugs in undergarments

A woman motorcyclist has been arrested for allegedly importing drugs, after ICA officers found bundles of heroin, 'Ice' and Erimin-5 tablets on her at Woodlands Checkpoint.

SINGAPORE: A Malaysian motorcyclist has been arrested for allegedly importing drugs.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said the 39-year-old woman who was travelling alone was stopped for checks on arrival at Woodlands Checkpoint.

During the course of checks, female ICA officers noticed that the woman was wearing two layers of undergarment.

Upon closer examination, ICA officers found three bundles, each wrapped with black tapes, on her.

The bundles were found to contain about 950gm of heroin, 34gm of 'Ice' and 500 Erimin-5 tablets.

The estimated worth of the haul is more than S$109,000.

The woman was handed over to CNB for further investigations, together with the seized exhibits.

She is being investigated for drug importation. If convicted, she may face the death penalty.

A maid helped her boyfriend to bring drugs into the country, was jailed on Monday for four years. Listiyanti Ayu Astuti, 26, was carrying 3.88g of heroin in a slingbag when the couple were arrested on June 27 last year in Eunos Crescent.

A district court heard that the Indonesian maid arrived in Singapore in August 2010. She ran away from her employers in March 2012 to stay with Mohamed Murad Hassan, 39, a Singaporean.

The couple would rent rooms in various parts of Singapore. She saw him consuming heroin and also watched him pack the drugs in plastic bags and straws and sell these at a void deck at Circuit Road.

Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau arrested the couple after a tip-off.

A woman was jailed for three weeks on Monday for offering $20 to two police officers to not take action against her for littering. Filpino national Prisbelle Pascua Abalos, 26, who was on social visit here, admitted to corruptly offering the bribe to Corporal Fatin Hazirah Mustaffa and Staff Sergeant Yves Yeo Mingshu who caught her throwing a cigarette butt near Orchard Towers on Aug 22 last year.

The officers were on foot patrol at about 1.45am that day when they saw Abalos and three other Filipinos smoking near the main entrance of Orchard Towers. After asking them for their identification papers, Cpl Fatin saw Abalos throw a cigarette butt on the floor. She warned her about littering and asked her to pick it up which she did.

While waiting for a friend to retrieve their passports left at a bar in the building, Abalos threw the same cigarette butt on the floor again. Abalos was again warned by the officers. When the friend returned with the passports, the officers told the other two that they could leave.

Cpl Fatin told Abalos that she would be issuing a summons against her for littering. As Abalos could not remember her Singapore address, she was allowed to get her handbag. She then told the officers that she was unable to find her address and instead, took out a wallet and gave two $10 bills to the officers, telling them to "go downstairs have food and drink''.

Gambler jailed for cheating women of horse race bets

A man who duped four women into giving him $55,000 to place bets on horse races was jailed for 14 months on Monday. Malaysian Peter Aw Boo Cheong, 41, was a race horse owner with the Malaysian Racing Association when he cheated them into giving him between $5,000 and $35,000 each between April 2010 and February 2011.

He pleaded guilty last month to three of six charges. The amount involved in the proceeded charges was $35,000.

A district court heard that he met the single women online in 2010 and led them to believe that he was interested in a romantic relationship with them. In his dealings with the victims, he presented himself as a divorcee with young children whom he doted on, was well-to-do, educated and working in the Singapore Turf Club.

Within a few days of contacting them, he would ask the victims to meet him urgently to discuss investment opportunities he had which he claimed would reap significant profits. He told them he had insider information with reliable tips about a certain horse race and was able to assess accurately which horse would win that race.
