Women jailed, fined for RWS moneylending business
Posted: 10 October 2011 1948 hrs

SINGAPORE: Two Malaysian women, who made almost daily trips from Johor Bahru to a casino in Singapore, were sentenced on Monday for carrying out unlicensed moneylending activities.

Forty-nine-year-old Lee Chai Thing, who is unemployed, was jailed six months and fined S$120,000 for being an unlicensed moneylender.

Her 'runner', 24-year-old Ban Pei Chin, who works at a coffeeshop, was jailed six weeks and fined S$60,000.

Their offences were committed at Resorts World Sentosa between January and August this year.

The court heard that both women visited the casino almost daily since early this year.

They then gave out loans of between S$500 and S$10,000 to debtors in the form of cash or cash chips.

In July, Lee also opened a deposit account with the casino to aid her illegal business.

The court heard that Ban received free meals and about S$20 on various occasions for her services.

The duo were arrested on August 3.

District Judge John Ng said Lee was not a "usual loanshark" as the offence was non-syndicated and involved a "minimal" level of sophistication.

He also noted that Ban's benefits in assisting the business were rather insubstantial.

Both women were emotionless during sentencing.

One member of the gang would be stationed outside the shop to receive the stolen items.

Police studied the surveillance video from these shops, and seven of the gang were arrested inside an unspecified shop shortly.

The eighth accomplice, Nguyen Van Hai, 44, who was stationed outside, managed to escape. But not for long.

Police nab three for mobile phone scam
Posted: 26 October 2011 1551 hrs

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested three Vietnamese aged between 25 and 33 for their suspected involvement in at least six cases of cheating where genuine mobile phones were swapped with imitation China-made phones at mobile phone shops.

A statement by the police said that the suspects would patronise such shops on the pretext of selling genuine phones.

As part of the ruse, they would allow the shop owners to examine the condition of the phones before negotiating on the selling prices.

Once the deals were set, they would request to wrap the phones using pieces of paper and giving false promises that they would return within a week to buy back the phones.

The unsuspecting shop owners then left the suspects to do the wrapping while they attended to other customers in their shops.

It was only when the suspects left that the shop owners discovered that the wrapped mobile phones were different from the ones which were shown to them.

Police officers mounted an operation and arrested the suspect and his two accomplices along Lorong 12 Geylang Road.

Following their arrests, cash amounting to more than S$3300 and pieces of paper used to wrap the phones were seized.

Girlfriend threatens French businessman with dog attack
By Alvina Soh | Posted: 04 November 2011 1922 hrs

SINGAPORE: A French businessman, who is accused of smothering his Vietnamese girlfriend, claimed in court on Friday that she had tried to get her friends, and even her dog to attack him.

Sylvain Christian Emile Pilhion, 38, is accused of using criminal force on Ms Jocelyn Quynh-Anh Pohl, a recruitment consultant, by grabbing her and tossing her on a bed.

He also allegedly bit her left hand and tried to smother her with a pillow on March 29.

However, Pilhion denied the alleged incidents in court Friday, claiming that Pohl instructed her black labrador to attack him and when that ruse failed, threatened to send her friends to kill him.

Pilhion, who has a two-year-old daughter, said that Pohl and him had a falling out earlier that day when he mentioned that he was going to meet his wife to discuss their divorce.

He also told the court that Pohl was depressed and had mood swings in the days prior to the incident.

He said their relationship deteriorated throughout the day, and eventually ended up in a minor scuffle, which led to Ms Pohl shutting herself in the toilet.

Pilhion said he followed her into the toilet, where he comforted her, before carrying her off to bed.

He rebutted claims that he had instead, wrongfully restrained her by grabbing her and tossing her onto the bed.

The tall and well-built man said that when he tried to hug her later, she pushed him and went 'crazy' by throwing things at him and hitting him in the chest and face.

Pilhion said that he pushed her away by "pressing a cushion to the side of her face", and denied smothering her face with a pillow.

Pilhion also responded to allegations that he had bit her hand, claiming that Pohl had unexpectedly placed a fist in his mouth during the skirmish, causing him to unintentionally bite it.

The court heard that Pohl eventually called the police, and Pilhion was later remanded.

The trial will continue once new hearing dates have been arranged.
