Transfer system is robbery, says Platini

MONTE CARLO | Fri Aug 30, 2013 12:59pm BST

(Reuters) - UEFA president Michel Platini called for a sweeping reform of the transfer system on Friday, describing the current system to a form of robbery and saying the transfer window was too long.

Platini said there were too many people vying to take a slice of commission from players' transfers and also said players were to blame for not respecting contracts.

His comments came amid the ongoing saga of Gareth Bale's possible move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid for 100 million euros (85.31 million pounds) and at the end of a European transfer window which critics say has dragged on for too long.

"I think transfers are robbery," the former France captain told a media conference.

"Today, the player is more a product than a player and that irks me because there is a whole lot of people trying to make this player make money in order to earn commissions, we should think about that and try to find something more healthy.

"Players are not free and they don't even belong to clubs, they belong to financial holdings, companies or people."

"I don't think it is right. I believe this is important and this is new in the world of football," he added. "We are looking into that, working on it, I agree maybe this window is too big, too long."

Platini said that UEFA were looking at a possible reform of the transfer system and were aware of that FIFPro, the world player's union, wanted sweeping reforms.

Platini pointed out that in his own playing days, players had gone on strike for the right to leave their clubs at the end of their contract.

But nowadays, he said players failed to respect their contracts, often refusing to play or train to try and force a move elsewhere.

"I belong to the generation who went on strike so players could leave at the end of the contract," he added.

"Players went on strike to be free.... now I see they sign contracts, they don't play because they want to leave again... there is something unhealthy about that.

"Robbery may be too tough a word, but when you sign a contract you should respect it and that's what I wanted to say... We need a re-think of the whole transfer system."

He added that inflated transfer fees had always been a source of debate.

"We have been asking ourselves the same question for 30 years as to the morality of the money involved in transfers," he said.

"People asked these questions when Diego Maradona was transferred for 30 million, or Zinedine Zidane for 60 million."

An Old Trafford no: Daniele Di Rossi looks like he wants to stay in Rome Photo: EPA

11:42PM BST 01 Sep 2013

Daniele De Rossi
Roma to Manchester United
£15m

Least likely of United’s targets to come off. The Italian has no desire to leave Rome and his club are also in no rush to sell following United’s £10.75 million bid.

Ander Herrera
Athletic Bilbao to Manchester United

£31m

The midfielder was left on the bench for yesterday’s La Liga clash with Real Madrid amid speculation in Spain that he had asked Bilbao to allow him to move to Old Trafford. Conflicting reports suggested he had also rejected United, but David Moyes must still trigger a 36 million release clause.

Mesut Ozil
Real Madrid to Arsenal
£35 million

Madrid will look to major player sales once they sign Gareth Bale and Ozil, who wants to stay in La Liga, would represent a dream signing for Wenger. A big bid is likely.

Marouane Fellaini
Everton to Man Utd
£25M

United could be forced to offer more than the expired £23 million escape clause in Fellaini’s contract at Everton, but there is an expectation on all sides that a deal will be done.

Leighton Baines
Everton to Manchester United
£18m

Everton are determined to resist United’s attempts to sign the left back, but the player is believed to be equally keen to move, so expect a day of tense negotiations.

Yohan Cabaye

Newcastle to Arsenal
£20M-£18m

Newcastle are still braced for an improved offer from Arsenal, but the deal looks unlikely given the Gunners have had two weeks to raise their bid and have failed to do so.

Angel di Maria
Real Madrid to Arsenal
£25 million

Arsenal have been tracking Di Maria even since he played his club football in Argentina and he will become surplus to requirements at Madrid once Bale arrives.

Julian Draxler
Schalke to Arsenal
£42 million

Arsenal are still desperate to add midfielders and, at just 19, Draxler is rated among the best young prospects in his position. He would cost at least £40 million.

Karim Benzema
Real Madrid to Arsenal
£40 million

A world class striker has been Wenger’s priority for the past year and, while Benzema wants to stay in Madrid, Arsenal have been encouraged that a bid could prove successful.

James McCarthy
Wigan to Everton
£15m

Roberto Martinez has identified McCarthy as his No 1 replacement if Marouane Fellaini departs for Manchester United but will need to pay £15 million.

Transfer Wrap: Premier League

Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on deadline day. Here we round up the major Premier League deals.

Ozil, 24, signed a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium for a fee reported to be in excess of £40million, giving the club's fans the big-name signing they craved.

The attacking midfielder joined Arsene Wenger's side in the last hour before the transfer window shut, and his arrival is a significant boost to the club's hopes this season.

The Germany international was not the only arrival at Arsenal on Monday, with Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano signing a season-long loan deal from Palermo earlier in the day.

Monday's other biggest deal saw Manchester United finally complete the signing of midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton for a fee of £27.5million.

The 25-year-old became David Moyes' second signing following the arrival of young full-back Guillermo Varela, though the Scot allowed Bebe to leave for Pacos de Ferreira.

Meanwhile, Liverpool added three players to their squad on transfer deadline day, doing their business early, as defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori signed permanent deals while winger Victor Moses joined on loan from Chelsea.

Sakho, 23, arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee in the region of £18million and the Frenchman will give manager Brendan Rodgers options in central defence, while another player in that position, Tiago Ilori, joined from Sporting Lisbon.

Moses signed a season-long loan deal at Anfield, while Liverpool sent attacker Fabio Borini to Sunderland for the remainder of the 2013-14 campaign, and Dani Pacheco left, signing a permanent deal at Spanish outfit Alcorcon.

Another Italian, Andrea Dossena, also joined Sunderland on a permanent deal from Napoli.

Crystal Palace were among the most active sides in the window, completing their business by signing defenders Adrian Mariappa and Jack Hunt, and midfielder Barry Bannan.

Mariappa, a centre-back from Reading, and left-back Hunt – who joined from Huddersfield Town – will give Palace depth, while Scotland international Bannan was brought in from Aston Villa.

Palace defender Peter Ramage exited the club - signing for Championship side Barnsley on a season-long loan deal.

Stoke City completed the first move of Monday, with striker Marko Arnautovic signing from Werder Bremen on a four-year deal, while Aston Villa's Stephen Ireland joined on loan for the season.

West Brom broke their transfer record to sign Sunderland attacker Stephane Sessegnon, with the Benin international signing a three-year deal at the club.

And The Hawthorns outfit also signed France international Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille on loan for the season, with the option to make the deal permanent, while goalkeeper Lee Camp joined on a free transfer.

Despite further bolstering their squad with the acquisition of Victor Anichebe from Everton, there was late disappointment for Steve Clarke's side as they missed out to the same club on the loan signature of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Armed with the money from Fellaini's sale, Roberto Martinez's side went on to add James McCarthy to their ranks on a permanent basis, while Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku arrived on temporary deals from Manchester City and Chelsea.

Cardiff City signed West Brom forward Peter Odemwingie, subject to Premier League ratification.

The Nigerian forward had been linked with moves to Swansea and Stoke during the transfer window but Malky Mackay has won the race for the 32-year-old, who has signed a two-year deal after the £2.5million move.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa signed Czech striker Libor Kozak from Lazio, for a fee reportedly worth £7million, Swansea loaned Alvaro Vazquez from Getafe and Manchester United defender Nick Powell joined Championship side Wigan Athletic, also on loan for the duration of the season.

Stoke sent Ryan Shotton out to Wigan for the season, as Tottenham also allowed Tom Carroll and Benoit Assou-Ekotto to drop down to the Championship with QPR and Fulham signed Elsad Zverotic from Young Boys.

Transfer Wrap: Bundesliga

Marko Arnautovic's transfer from Werder Bremen to Stoke City was one of the earliest to take place on the last day of the window, with the Premier League club announcing the deal on Monday morning.

Bremen’s sporting director Thomas Eichin told the German club's official website: "We wish Marko all the best for his future and we wish him every success with his new club."

Meanwhile, Makoto Hasebe remained in Germany, but brought an end to his five-year stint with Wolfsburg in order to join Bavarian side Nuremberg.

Hasebe won the Bundesliga during his time with Wolfsburg but will help to fill the gap left in Michael Wiesinger's team by Timmy Simons' departure in June.

Another midfielder, Per Ciljan Skjelbred, joined Bundesliga newcomers Hertha Berlin from Hamburg on a season-long loan on deadline day, along with Tolga Cigerci - who was loaned from Wolfsburg.

Meanwhile, Tranquillo Barnetta completed a season-long loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt before the deadline.

The Schalke midfielder told Frankfurt's official website: "I'm really delighted that it has worked out and that I've got to know the city and the team."

Karim Haggui moved to Stuttgart after terminating his contract with Hannover, while Thomas Schneider's men allowed Johan Audel to depart for Nantes in his native France.

Elsewhere, Patrick Helmes returned to Cologne from Wolfsburg and Australia international forward Nikita Rukavytsya also dropped down to the second tier to join Frankfurt on loan from Mainz.

Transfer Wrap: Serie A
3 September 2013

After a number of moves were thrashed out on a typically frantic transfer deadline day, we round up the biggest deals in Serie A.

Kaka was undoubtedly the headline arrival in the Italian top flight, as he ended a disappointing three-year spell in La Liga with Real Madrid in order to return to Milan.

"I'm coming home," he told Sky Italia after finalising his switch. 'I'm very happy and now I get to live lots of new joyous moments with Milan."

There was also a departure from the San Siro, with 18-year-old striker Andrea Petagna joining Sampdoria on a season-long loan with the option of co-ownership.

Sampdoria also acquired Birkir Bjarnason from Pescara on a permanent deal.

Hellas Verona enjoyed a successful end to the window, bringing in two highly rated loanees in the form of Juan Iturbe from Porto and Marco Donadel from Napoli.

Bologna and Catania were also busy in the loan market, signing Jonathan Cristaldo from Metalist Kharkiv and Jaroslav Plasil from Bordeaux respectively.

Meanwhile, young Inter midfielder Joel Obi will play his football for Parma this season, after agreeing a switch for the entirety of the 2013-14 campaign.

Juventus and Sassuolo were in negotiations for much of the day, as midfielder Luca Marrone joined the latter on a co-ownership deal while young striker Domenico Berardi joined the Serie A champions - though he will be loaned back immediately.

Serie A also saw a high-profile departure as goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano left Palermo to join Arsenal on loan for the season.

In other moves, Genoa captured Ricardo Centurion, Chievo Verona signed Tomasz Kupisz and Alessandro Bernardini and Livorno brought in Luca Anania.
