Premier League is being left behind in scramble for stars

This summer the epicentre of the transfer window — as the Premier League would like to portray itself — has been usurped. The biggest deals, so far, have belonged to France and to Spain, and even if Gareth Bale were to leave Tottenham Hotspur he would also be leaving England.

Big deal: Edinson Cavani moved from Napoli to Paris St-Germain for £57 million Photo: EPA

By Jason Burt, Football Correspondent
10:00PM BST 10 Aug 2013

There is money to spend. It is just that the new-found spending power of Ligue 1, concentrated on two clubs, and the perennial financial muscle and cache of Spain’s big two have held sway.

It has, however, led Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman of Manchester United, to question why some of the most-sought after players in European football such as Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani – have joined Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain who have dominated the market. Woodward said that such deals “have clearly put inflation into the football system again, counter, I guess, to what FFP [Financial Fair Play] wants” while insisting that United had the “financial strength that we can pay top wages in the world, top transfer fees”.

Woodward added that the bigger issue for United was whether manager David Moyes wanted to sign such players - with Monaco, for example, having also acquired the Porto pair of Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez who were previously linked to moves to bigger clubs such as Chelsea.

Woodward did not name any specific players or clubs but was speaking about the general trend with less traditionally successful or big clubs, who have fresh and powerful financial backing, usually from an oligarch owner or Middle-East investment, spending so dominantly.

“You could also look at some of the places those players go to and scratch your head and think 'would you rather go and play in front of 76,000 who are screaming for you, and it’s full every single game at Old Trafford, with a massive following round the world, challenging for trophies every year or do you want to go and play there?’” Woodward said.

Monaco, for example, have a stadium capacity of 18,500 — and have regularly played in front of just 5,000 fans — while PSG have relatively small backing and a modest record of success. Russian clubs such as Zenit St Petersburg have also tried to spend heavily although Anzhi Makhachkala have signalled their intention to cut back which could lead to a fire sale with players such as Willian and Samuel Eto’o leaving.

Despite the financial muscle of the Premier League, strengthened further by the latest raft of television contracts, the biggest deals so far this summer have undoubtedly been conducted around Europe with Barcelona having recruited Brazilian striker Neymar and Real Madrid in pursuit of Bale — for a world-record fee — to add to Isco.

United are in the market for a marquee signing, even if their pursuit of Cesc Fabregas appears set to fail, while should Wayne Rooney manage to engineer a move to Chelsea and Luis Suarez eventually leave Liverpool — although his hopes of joining Arsenal are all but extinguished — it could lead to a surge of spending. If Bale were to leave it would, also, result in a spike.

Manchester City have been the biggest spenders so far in the Premier League which is no surprise given the desire to back their new manager Manuel Pellegrini while Tottenham Hotspur have strengthened significantly as they sense an opportunity to not just break into the top four but challenge for the Premier League title. Even so there is the suspicion from some supporters that they are spending in anticipation of also selling Bale.

Moyes acknowledged the market is getting “tougher”. “It’s a tough market out there and Paris St-Germain have increased that,” he said. “Whereas we thought it was Chelsea who had taken the ante up, then Man City came in and now Paris St-Germain are the new players as well. There are some of the Russian clubs also. The Premier League is being affected by other markets with new owners going into clubs. There is probably a group of elite top players who tend to choose between six or seven destinations and it always means that because they are in demand it’s hard to agree a price to get them.”
