Transfer Wrap: La Liga

3 September 2013

359365header.jpg

After a number of moves were thrashed out on a typically frantic transfer deadline day, we round up the biggest deals in La Liga.

Although Gareth Bale's reported world-record move from Tottenham to Real Madrid was confirmed before Monday, the Spanish capital still saw plenty of transfer action on the final day.

Real's cross-city rivals Atletico were busy, bringing in two players to help bolster Diego Simeone's squad.

Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld arrived for a reported €10million from Dutch champions Ajax, while Josuha Guilavogui made the switch to the Vicente Calderon from Saint-Etienne.

But, along with officially unveiling Bale to reporters, Real were mostly caught up in allowing players to leave.

Kaka ended his frustrating spell in La Liga by returning to Milan, as Denis Cheryshev departed for Sevilla on a season-long loan and Antonio Adan was released on a free transfer.

Real Madrid also allowed Mesut Ozil to move to Arsenal, as the Premier League club broke their transfer record to secure his signature.

Transfer Wrap: Eredivisie

3 September 2013

359367header.jpg

Ajax's Toby Alderweireld joined Atletico Madrid while several other clubs were busy before the Eredivisie transfer window shut on Monday.

The departure of Alderweireld was the headline news, with the exit of the defender sure to be a blow to defending champions Ajax.

Ajax – who have won the last three Eredivisie titles – have now lost two stars in the last week, with Alderweireld joining Tottenham's Christian Eriksen in leaving the Dutch capital.

The Belgium international was linked with a host of English clubs, including Liverpool, Everton, Tottenham and Newcastle United, but has chosen to move to Spain to further his career.

Ajax did add to their squad, though, signing 23-year-old midfielder Lerin Duarte from Heracles for an undisclosed fee.

Duarte has signed a four-year deal and was compared to Edgar Davids by Ajax technical director Marc Overmars after joining the club.

Heracles kept busy, signing Morocco midfielder Iliass Bel Hassani from Sparta Rotterdam, and experienced German midfielder Simon Cziommer joined on a free transfer.

Heerenveen striker Mark Uth also joined Heracles, on loan for the season.

NEC Nijmegen were also active, bringing in three players, including Manchester United defender Marnick Vermijl.

Vermijl has signed on loan for a season, while Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Jakob Jantscher signed a permanent deal.

Jantscher, 24, was on loan at Dinamo Moscow last term and has enjoyed a good career in Austria, while the club's other inclusion saw Samuel Stefanik arrive from Trencin.

Vitesse also dipped into the loan market, bolstering their ranks with the loan arrivals of Chelsea's Sam Hutchinson and Everton's Francisco Junior, both on season-long deals.

Hutchinson is the sixth arrival from Chelsea, with Vitesse hoping their partnership with the UEFA Europa League champions can bear fruit.

Gael Kakuta, Patrick van Aanholt, Christian Atsu, Lucas Piazon and Cristian Cuevas have already joined Vitesse from Chelsea on loan.

Francisco Junior, 21, arrived at Everton in 2012 from Benfica but failed to break into the first team, making just one appearance.

PEC Zwolle signed midfielder Leroy Labylle from MVV Maastricht, who signed a three-year contract, while Feyenoord loaned out defenders Matthew Steenvoorden and Lucas Woudenberg to Excelsior.

FC Twente moved Joshua John out of the club, as he joined FC Nordsjaelland on a permanent move, while Heerenveen midfielder Sven Kums left to join Zulte-Waregem of Belgium.

Kums was immediately replaced by 21-year-old Ajax midfielder Joeri de Kamps, who signed a loan deal for the rest of the season.

Nigerian Uche Nwofor joined Heerenveen on loan for the season, from VVV Venlo, Roland Alberg signed a one-year deal at ADO Den Haag from Elazigspor and Robert van Boxel joined Cambuur on loan from Sparta Rotterdam.

Transfer Wrap: Ligue 1
3 September 2013

359374header.jpg

Marseille were busy on transfer deadline day, signing Florian Thauvin and Mario Lemina to bolster their Ligue 1 title push.

Marseille – who finished second to Paris Saint-Germain last term – finally got their man in Thauvin, who had been linked with a switch from Lille for some time.

Thauvin signed for Lille from Bastia in January, but was sent back to the club on loan immediately.

He scored 10 goals in 32 Ligue 1 appearances last term but has now made the switch for Marseille for a reported €15million fee.

His acquisition was added to by the arrival of Lemina, who joined from Lorient for an undisclosed fee.

The two players, both 20, were team-mates in France's recent FIFA Under-20 World Cup-winning squad and have signed five-year deals at the club.

On a busy day, transfer business between Marseille and Lorient continued, as the latter signed 19-year-old midfielder Rafidine Abdullah and loaned Larry Azouni, with the option of signing the latter permanently if he impresses.

Lille sold 21-year-old midfielder Viktor Klonaridis, who joined Panathinaikos, while Toulouse signed left-back Francois Moubandje from Servette.

Bastia beat the deadline to sign Sochaux's Ryad Boudebouz, with the Algeria international signing a three-year deal with the club.

Saint-Etienne midfielder Josuha Guilavogui moved to Atletico Madrid, signing a three-year deal with the Liga outfit, while they also allowed Danijel Aleksic to leave, with the Serbia international to join Ligue 2 outfit Arles-Avignon on loan for the rest of the season.

Saint-Etienne also brought players in though, adding Mevlut Erdinc and Yohan Mollo from Rennes and Nancy respectively, with the latter arriving on loan.

Other deals saw Monaco defender Gary Kagelmacher sign for Valenciennes on a season-long loan deal.

The Uruguayan centre-back made 35 appearances for Monaco in their promotion-winning campaign in Ligue 2 last term.

Sochaux have failed to win one of their first four Ligue 1 matches this season but boosted their attacking options with the loan signing of Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka.

Mayuka has signed a season-long deal from Southampton, and will hope to prove his worth after failing to score for the Premier League outfit in 11 appearances last season.

Sochaux also signed Thomas Guerbert on a four-year deal from Dijon and will be hoping he can cut the mustard in the top-flight.

Montpellier signed Peruvian midfielder Jean Deza from San Martin de Porres on loan, while Argentinian striker Silvio Romero arrived at Rennes.

Romero scored 13 goals in 32 top-flight fixtures for former club Lanus last season.

Other loan deals saw Axel Ngando move from Rennes to Auxerre, Jaroslav Plasil left Bordeaux for Catania and Lyon's Mohamed Yattara linked up with Angers.

Premier League clubs spend a record £630m in summer transfer window

Gross spending totalled 29 per cent more than the equivalent 2012 figure of £490m and £130m more than the previous record of £500m set in 2008, according to analysis by Deloitte

Premier League clubs combined spent a record £630 million [€743m] in the summer 2013 transfer window, according to analysis by business advisory firm Deloitte.

Mesut Ozil was the most expensive arrival in the Premier League. The Germany international signed for Arsenal from Real Madrid for a club record €47m, the second largest transfer fee ever for a Premier League club, while Tottenham sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world-record fee of €100m.

"The story of this summer transfer window is of new records: a new record for Premier League spending as well as a new world transfer record fee," said Dan Jones at Deloitte.

"Whilst the sale of Gareth Bale brought £85m [€100m] into the Premier League, net spending is also a record, at £400m [€472m]. As the financial rewards for participation and success in the Premier League increase, so it follows that clubs are investing on the pitch to ensure they continue to benefit from the remarkable Premier League growth story."

Premier League clubs have greater funds at their disposal with cash from their latest domestic three-year TV deal. BT Sport has spent £738m [€871m] over three years for the rights to 38 live matches a season, while Sky paid £2.3 billion [€2.7bn] for 116 matches a season.

Alex Thorpe, consultant at Deloitte, added: “This is the first year that Premier League clubs will benefit financially from the league's new broadcast deals; each club benefitting from a share of the extra £600m [€708m] of revenues in 2013-14 alone.

"Testament to the impact this is having is in the scale of Premier League gross spending, as well as the gulf in net spending between the Premier League and other European leagues.

"Whereas many clubs around Europe have been reliant on selling players in order to spend, the financial advantages Premier League clubs enjoy has enabled net spending of £400m [€472m] across the league.

"Many clubs, including new entrants to the league, have successfully competed in the European transfer market to attract high profile foreign talent."

After the Premier League, the next highest spenders were La Liga and Serie A, each with a gross spend of £335m [€395m], followed by Ligue 1 with £315m [€372m] and the Bundesliga with £230m [€272m].
