For SMEs (large numbers) & tiny businesses e.g. shops & stalls they are very dependent on certain employees. Such as Malaysian chefs. Management staff & owners will be pissed if work permit renewals are screwed.
How does this affect the majority of citizens. More of them are out of jobs than the SME's, stall holders and the likes put together. It's the numbers game for elections.
Many work permit holders have Singaporean relatives, family members, or BF/ GF relations with local voters. They are pissed.
Still I do not see this translate into the majority of Sinagporeans.
Co-workers and friends with work permit holders can be pissed either they sympathized with work permit holder friends or their work pressure increased after losing their co-workers.
I had Malaysians working for me but in one of the earlier recessions, the MOM (known as Ministry of Labour those days) rules for retrenchments were for foreigners to be retrenched first. I understood the rationale then so by slowing the approval of work permits now, where is the problem?
See?
Society is more closely knitted than you think. You can not simply imagine the friends and family members of work permit holders are just only foreigners. Fucking COW for example was an FT, now he is your fucking minister of HELL!
If you read the posts in this and other local forums on topics concerning FT's or work permit holders, then if you still hold the belief that there is a closely knit society between Singaporeans (especially the retrenched) and the foreigners, I could be turning blind.
You have limited the scope of your argument to just Malaysians as the only foreigners here and you refer to the COW as
my minister. Am I right to assume you are indeed a Malaysian?
