He was ridiculed by the British for reading the newspaper. He said: English is too simple. Is it interesting to read it upside down

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, there was a man who was known as "the strange hero of the late Qing Dynasty" and "the crazy scholar of the late Qing Dynasty". He was a famous scholar Gu Hongming who was well versed in both China and the West.
In Gu Hongming's case, there are actually three kingdoms. His father, Gu Ziyun, is Chinese, but his mother is a Portuguese Malaysian.
Gu Hongming was born in Penang, Malaysia. When he was 10 years old, he went to Scotland with his British adoptive father. When he was 14 years old, he went to Germany to study. Later, he went to England and France for further study. The last one obtained 13 doctorates and was proficient in nine languages, including English, German, French, Japanese, Malay, Portuguese, Russian and even Latin and Greek. His language talent was natural It's amazing. Lin Yutang, a writer who is good at writing in English, praised Gu Hongming, saying: "the English language is superior to others. In the past 200 years, it has not been seen to be on the right side."
In 1885, after many years of living abroad, Gu Hongming came to the Qing Dynasty, where he served as "foreign secretary" under Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang.
In 1891, the Russian crown prince and the Greek Prince visited China. When he came to Wuhan, Zhang Zhidong did his best to treat him as a host, while Gu Hongming served as interpreter. At that time, the Russian crown prince talked to Zhang Zhidong in French, and Gu Hongming's translation was timely and accurate, which surprised the Russian crown prince.
When Zhang Zhidong entertained the two princes, the Russian crown prince whispered to the Greek prince in Russian, and he doubted the hygiene of the dishes.
As soon as they finished, Gu Hongming said with a smile: "our dishes are clean and hygienic. Please feel free to taste them."
After hearing this, they were surprised again. During the dinner, Zhang Zhidong took out his snuff bottle and smoked. The Greek Prince did not know what it was, so he turned to ask the Russian crown prince what it was in Greek. Unexpectedly, after a few words with Zhang Zhidong, Gu Hongming took the snuff bottle, handed it to the Greek prince, and taught him how to use the snuff bottle in Greek.
A Qing Dynasty man who was despised by them could easily switch between Chinese, French, Russian and Greek for a moment, which made the Russian crown prince and the Greek Prince gape.
When he studied in England, he was also known for his English level. Once, Ku Hung Ming deliberately took an English newspaper to read in the street. The British people around him look at Gu Hongming's typical dress of the Qing Dynasty, with a whip at the back of his head, which is really rustic. So they began to point and whisper to Gu Hongming, obviously sarcastic. Although Gu Hongming felt the malice around him, he still pretended not to understand and continued to read the newspaper backwards.
Gu Hongming's actions made several British people laugh: "the newspapers are all down, still pretending to understand English."
Gu Hongming couldn't bear it at this time. He said in a typical London accent, "your words are too simple. Is it interesting not to look backward?" This made several Englishmen gape.
Gu Hongming was a staunch royalist, so he always kept the whip. Even when the Qing Dynasty died, he still adhered to the Qing Dynasty's long robes and Mandarin coats, and even the tradition of concubines. He married a Japanese woman named Yoshida as a concubine. Therefore, Gu Hongming claimed that he was "born in Nanyang, studied in the west, married in Dongyang, and worked in Beiyang". Back to Sohu to see more
