I think the goalkeeper can be a penalty kick taker too. He's already accustomed to doing goal kicks with great power. That also helps to take up one spot, so another outfield player is spared from the mental torture.

I was on my way to go out when they were doing the shoot out.

My son told me Italy 2nd kicker missed! I was like ok that's good for England.

And then I asked......so did England kick first? And he said no. Italy won the coin toss to go first.

So the odds were against England the moment they lost that coin toss. In the history of the Euros there has never been a team that kicked 2nd and won the shoot out. NEVER.

I think at the top level the team that kicks first almost ALWAYS wins the shoot out. Might as well just flip the coin.

You know we all say that the statistics show the team that kicks first in penalty shootout usually wins?

Well in the 1994 World Cup Final, Italy kicked first but still lost to Brazil.
