With the rules for penalties very strict now - When the ball is kicked, the defending goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, or in line with, the goal line.

I think kicking down the middle is not such a good idea anymore.

With the new rules it is harder for the GK to jump out to the sides and thus away clear of a ball down the centre- or about centre.

better to shoot for the corners and sides.
 
If it was me, I prefer to place the ball low, aiming for the corner of the net, that it is not in the middle towards the goalkeeper, nor risk hitting the post.
Worse would be to kick it wide.
 
Germany also lost 0-2 to S. Korea in the WC final game in 2018.
Germany was the World Cup holder.
Did not realise VAR was used in that year.
Can see a familiar player kept missing the goal.

But panenka penalty has a very good successful rate. The taker must be very brave, imagine aiming at the GK.
To save, the GK must be very brave not to dive. But if the taker never do a Panenka and the GK never dives, it makes him look stupid.

Will be played in London

So England got to get past Ukraine in Rome. Then they have home ground advantage in Semis and Finals. Playing either Czech or Denmark is also better than Playing Belgium, Italy or Spain. It would be like playing as hosts ala.......1966......
 
As matters stand, England has a good chance to proceed to the later stages, and I hope that England is able to win it.
