In Pictures: Italy players moved to tears during Auschwitz visit
The Azzurri visited the old concentration camp ahead of their opening game at Euro 2012, with many visibly affected by the tour around the site
Jun 6, 2012 6:05:00 PM
Italy's Euro 2012 squad visited Auschwitz in Poland on Wednesday. The Azzurri were given a tour of the site, which serves as a memorial for those who died in the Holocaust during World War II.
They also had the chance to listen to the stories of some survivors, with several players unable to control their emotions during the tour.
"This is something that leaves you shocked," Giorgio Chiellini said during a press conference. "It is hard to find words to describe what we felt.
"I studied these things at school, but seeing them in real life is very different. It was very touching to hear the stories of the survivors.
"The visit is something that we will remember forever."
The Azzurri's visit of the concentration camp coincided with that of the Netherlands national team, which gave Mario Balotelli the chance to catch up with Manchester City team-mate Nigel de Jong.
Riccardo Montolivo was spotted misty-eyed during the visit, and he confessed afterwards to being overwhelmed by the experience.
"Coming here was a must for us," he told Rai Sport. "It is a moment of reflection and I feel devastated,"
Italy will kick off their Euro 2012 campaign against Spain on Sunday.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini emerges as leading candidate to succeed Cesare Prandelli at Italy
Roberto Mancini could face a choice between the Italy job and signing a new contract at Manchester City after emerging as the leading candidate to succeed Cesare Prandelli if he leaves his post following Euro 2012.

Mancini, who guided City to the Premier League title last season, has yet to commit to a new deal at the Etihad Stadium, despite opening talks with the club’s owners in Abu Dhabi last month over an extension to his contract, which is due to expire in 12 months.
The 47 year-old, who is on holiday in Sardinia, had been handed the opportunity to begin negotiations to extend his City contract last December, but instead asked the club to wait until the summer in order to avoid distractions during the second half of the campaign.
Mancini’s success at City, following three Italian titles with Inter Milan, has earned him the admiration of senior figures within the Italian Football Federation and it is understood that he has been earmarked as first choice to replace Prandelli if Italy fail to deliver in Poland and Ukraine.
Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is coaching Paris St Germain, is another respected figure in Italy, but Mancini is regarded as the outstanding Italian manager of the moment. Fabio Capello, meanwhile, is not viewed as a contender to succeed Prandelli.
While discussions over a new long-term contract at City are expected to be a formality, the prospect of coaching Italy at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil could prove tempting to Mancini should Prandelli’s two-year reign in charge of the Azzurri come to an end following the European Championship.
The future of former Fiorentina coach Prandelli has been the subject of ongoing speculation in Italy due to suggestions that he is keen to return to club management.
The 54 year-old is understood to be frustrated with the role of coaching at international level and, with Italy due to start their Group C campaign against Spain in Gdansk on Sunday, sources in Italy have claimed that a poor tournament could see Prandelli and the Italian Football Federation part company this summer.
Last month, Prandelli attempted to end the rumours of his discontent by claiming: “I have a contract with the Federation until 2014 and intend to respect it.
“I really want to go forward, even though I know very well that all the coaches, even the national team, are tied to results.”
Mancini has admitted in the past that he has ambitions to manage Italy at some stage in his career, but with City seemingly on the brink of challenging for the Champions League — a competition Mancini has yet to win — he could face a difficult decision should Prandelli leave his job in the coming weeks.
But the lure of managing his country at a World Cup in Brazil could be viewed as a greater and more rewarding challenge for a man whose international playing career proved a frustrating case of unfulfilled ambitions, with just 36 caps in 10 years.
Don't get your hopes up! Southgate warns fans as England fly out to Krakow
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 07:45 GMT, 6 June 2012 | UPDATED: 07:45 GMT, 6 June 2012
As Roy Hodgson's England squad were about to jet off to Poland to embark on their Euro 2012 campaign, Gareth Southgate sent a stark reminder to Three Lions fans that the current crop are a long way off being able to match the international elite.
Southgate, who was capped 57 times by his country and is the FA's head of elite development, believes that England will struggle for possession against most sides in Poland and Ukraine.
Tough ask: England are set to go head-to-head with the world's elite
The 41-year-old will be working as a pundit for ITV during the tournament, and speaking at the launch of their coverage, he said: 'I don’t think we are in a situation where, as a country, we can go out there and outplay too many teams.
'We rarely outpossess other countries, so we’ve got to think logically about how we set up and the best way to get results.
'That’s not negative. How did we beat Spain (under Fabio Capello in November)? How did Chelsea get through against Barcelona? In certain games you have to accept the opposition might get more of the ball, so that tends to dictate what you do with your selection.'
Backs to the wall: Southgate expects England to struggle to keep possession
Southgate believes that England's opening game against France on Monday is a must-win for Hodgson's side, but he called for patience from fans should things not go to plan.
'Certainly you want to win the first game in the tournament, if you lose it you have a mountain to climb,' he said.
'There’s always an inquest whatever happens, but we have to have a realism about the situation (Hodgson has) been put into, the amount of time he’s got to work with the team.
Jetting in: England fly to Krakow on Wednesday
'If you look outside the squad and the standby list, there aren’t too many players that come into your thinking as being of international quality.
'The pool of players to pick from is the biggest thing, long-term, we have to look at, developing young players and changing how we do that and then that they are given an opportunity with clubs.'

Defoe flies home from Euro 2012 after England striker's father tragically passes away
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 09:08 GMT, 7 June 2012 | UPDATED: 09:21 GMT, 7 June 2012
Tragedy: Jermain Defoe only arrived in Krakow on Wednesday

Defoe was part of manager Roy Hodgson's 23-man party who arrived in Krakow on Wednesday but is expected to return 'in due course'.A statement from the Football Association read: 'England striker Jermain Defoe has returned home to England this morning following the passing of his father overnight.
'Jermain will re-join the England Euro squad in due course. There will be no replacement player called in.'
Going back: Defoe, who departed Luton for Poland on Wednesday, will now fly back to London to be with his family

A statement on their official website read: 'Jermain Defoe has returned home from the England squad base in Poland this morning after receiving the sad news of the passing away of his father overnight.

Krakow crackdown: Hooligans fired fierce warning by police
By MATT LAWTON PUBLISHED: 21:25 GMT, 6 June 2012 | UPDATED: 08:26 GMT, 7 June 2012
Fans in Krakow have been warned that the Polish riot police 'will come down on troublemakers like a bag full of anvils'.
An article in the Krakow Post, a newspaper with offices adjacent to the England team hotel and printed in English and Polish, warns of the harsh measures the police here will take if visiting supporters step out of line.
‘Do not expect softly, softly police tactics,’ says the slightly tongue-in-cheek article before listing what Poland’s anti-hooligan squads are armed with.
Watch out: Policing will be strict at the tournament
It claims the police will use:
Shotguns firing baton rounds that probably won’t kill you as long as you’re 30m away.
A truck-mounted water cannon affectionately known as ‘the typhoon’.
A high tech sonic canon that can make you wet yourself on its lowest setting.
Dogs that are trained to bite you directly in the testicles.
9mm handguns loaded with live ammo.
The article adds: ‘Krakow has a long history of hooligan violence and the local police have seen it all before.
‘These lads’ mums and dads rioted under Soviet machine guns.
A few chairs thrown by beered-up fans is not going to intimidate them.’Two entire pages in the paper were dedicated to a feature on how police dealt with hooligans at a Krakow derby match between Wisla and Cracovia.
Watch out: The newspaper claimed the dogs are trained to bite in sensitive areas
Pictures showed riot cops with shotguns and supporters being hit with CS spray as they charged gates.
England players will be allowed more freedom than at previous tournaments - with the failure of Fabio Capello's strict rule at South Africa during World Cup 2010 in mind.
The players were shut away in Rustenburg and complained of boredom as they faltered in the tournament.
England coach Gary Neville explained: 'You can never replicate the home environment. But in terms of being free to go for a coffee or to the shops, we should embrace it, even though it has never been done before.'
But they will have to watch out for temptations, as the paper highlighted some pitfalls both the players and fans could fall into.
Beware crossing the street anywhere but at a set of traffic lights - it is illegal to do so and the offence carries an automatic fine.
If you try and buy your way out with a bribe, you will be thrown in jail.
Watch out: England fans (and players) have been warned to be on their guard
The paper also had some advice for people distracted by the lovely ladies of Poland.
It said: 'Beware if two gorgeous ladies stop you in the street and invite you for a drink.
'If you buy them a couple of drinks you could be stung with a bill for hundreds of pounds.
'Should you decline to pay up, large gentlemen with shaved heads will helpfully escort you to a cash machine.'
The paper detailed one occasion in which a British customer at a strip club had £13,000 taken out of his account after using his card.

There is no place in the stands for people who use sporting events to declare personal, political or other points of view,’ said a website statement.‘
The Federation and the Russian national team strongly ask all real fans to oppose the provocative acts of hooligans and to cooperate fully with match organisers when it comes to security.’Theodor Gebre Selassie, the Czech Republic’s lone black player, was targeted but insisted that he did not want to make any complaint.‘It was nothing extreme. A cool and foggy morning in the Polish city failed to flatten the mood of the England camp on Tuesday following their useful point in the Group D opener in Donetsk.

Hodgson said: 'You don't become a really good team in three matches and 10 training sessions.'The French have gone 22 games unbeaten and that's not done overnight.'It's been people playing together, getting to know each other's games. The longer we play together, the better we'll become too.'I'm pleased the (France) game's out of the way. I'm pleased the players have shown they can cope well at this level.'I'm looking forward to the next game. This gives us a good platform. We'll get fitter as well — match fitter. Shut it! Nasri in taunt to French media after netting against England

Samir Nasri's fierce celebration after equalising against England was aimed at the French media, the Manchester City midfielder has revealed.
The former Arsenal midfielder netted for Les Bleus six minutes before the interval after his 18-yard effort squirmed past the diving Joe Hart.
Keep it shut: Nasri gesticulates to the French media after scoring on Monday night
Making his point: The Manchester City midfielder was unhappy with the treatment he received from the French media
Nasri, who was dropped for the 2010 World Cup, wheeled away in a somewhat angry celebration, saying "shut up", and putting his index finger to his mouth in a "be quiet" gesture aimed at the press box.
'I expressed my frustration,' Nasri told French TV Channel TF1.
'I have been shot down in flames while I just tried to respect the coach's orders.'
On target: Nasri scored with 39 minutes gone in the Group D opener
The 24-year-old came under fire from French national newspaper L'Equipe for his displays in the warm-up games leading into the tournament.'It was a reaction that I should not have,' added Nasri.
'When your family are reading some articles and you are the target every day, it is exhausting.'
Smuda makes defensive changes for Poland against Russia
The 63-year-old coach will look to stay more compact in midfield after replacing one of his wide men with a more defence-minded player in order to contain the Russian threat

Franciszek Smuda has revealed his Poland team to face Russia in their second Group A Euro 2012 encounter and the coach has elected to make one unforced defensive change in addition to the goalkeeping switch.
The co-hosts endured a disjointed performance in their opening game as they surrendered the lead to Greece despite having an extra player on the field following Sokratis Papastathopoulos' dismissal.
Keeper Wojciech Szczesny was shown red later in the match and is thus unavailable for the fixture with Dick Advocaat's side. He will be replaced between the sticks by resultant penalty-saving hero Przemyslaw Tyton.
Smuda has clearly recognised the array of attacking talent that Russia possess after seeing them dismantle the Czech Republic and has decided to shore up his midfield by bringing in Dariusz Dudka in place of wide player Maciej Rybus.
This will likely mean that Ludovic Obraniak will fill the space of the 22-year-old on the left with Jakub Blaszczykowski supporting Robert Lewandowski from the right.
