Carrick suns himself in Barbados as England face midfield crisis
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 08:20 GMT, 1 June 2012 | UPDATED: 09:55 GMT, 1 June 2012
While England faced a midfield dilemma following Frank Lampard's thigh injury, Michael Carrick was busy sunning himself on holiday after refusing to sit on the bench. The Manchester United midfielder was in Barbados with his family, while his international team-mates prepared for their final Euro 2012 warm-up game with Belgium at Wembley on Saturday.

Ninety-cap Lampard was ruled out of the tournament and replaced by Liverpool's Jordan Henderson - despite the youngster having an indifferent season at Anfield.Carrick, who has won 22 caps for the Three Lions, would have been the ideal replacement for Lampard but he was not included on Roy Hodgson's stand-by list after telling The FA he did not want to be used as a substitute.

It leaves Hodgson with a problem in the centre of midfield with Scott Parker also an injury concern. James Milner has some experience of playing in a central role for club as well as country, and there is a belief that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has the versatility to play there too. But this is not the kind of situation England would have wanted so close to the tournament, particularly when they had already lost Jack Wilshere to injury.
Part of the team: Jordan Henderson was called into the England squad after Frank Lampard was ruled out
It leaves Hodgson just one injury setback away from a completely makeshift central midfield when he already has to contend with the suspension of Wayne Rooney for the first two matches and the loss of Kyle Walker to injury, too.

Evra's France career hits bum note as defender is caught using shirt to wipe himself

Patrice Evra’s international career has hit rock bottom — after the France star was caught on camera wiping his backside with a team-mate's shirt. The Manchester United captain, 31, then held it up and sniffed it as he sat on the substitute's bench during a friendly with Serbia.

Smell good, Patrice? Evra takes a whiff of his team-mates shirt
Evra's actions have been slammed on the eve of the Euro 2012 championships.'It was disgusting!
But this gesture shows above all a real lack of respect towards the blue of France and all that it stands for,' said Paris magazine Le 10 Sport.
'We struggle to imagine Evra doing the same with the Manchester United shirt.'
The defender came under fire two years ago as he led a players' strike at the World Cup in South Africa.

The national team boss insisted that while he will not ban his squad from using social media sites at Euro 2012, he himself believes they are unsafe for the players

Germany coach Joachim Low believes that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are dangerous, but insisted that he will not ban his players from using them.
European champions Spain and Denmark have both imposed a total ban of communicating through these mediums throughout the duration of Euro 2012, but the Mannschaft boss has decided that he will not follow the example set by the two national teams, preferring instead to set guidelines of usage.
"I respect that the players use it. It's their way of communicating, but not mine. I think this type of exchange is rather dangerous," the national team boss was quoted as saying by Bild.
"For me, it is utterly incomprehensible how people share their private life, from truly confidential and intimate things, indiscriminately with thousands or even millions of people.
"I myself have just heard that my lawyer had to lock pages that someone has run under my name. The fact that someone can make something like that under a false name is already indicative of the whole system."

A welcome distraction: Euro 2012 a timely respite for depressed & debt-ridden Spain

Forget the Group of Death, Spain's sector at Euro 2012 has been dubbed by some as the Group of Debt. The Iberians, Italy and Ireland have all been hit hard by the global financial crisis, while Croatia's foreign deficit has spiralled in recent times. Only Greece are missing from debt-ridden Group C.
The Greeks upset the odds at Euro 2004 with a shock success which brought an overwhelming outpouring of joy to the nation. Something similar happened with Spain in Austria and Switzerland four years later, following four decades of disappointment at international level, and there was more merriment as La Furia Roja claimed the World Cup in South Africa two years ago.
IN NUMBERS Spain's current crisis
8
The budget deficit, in percentage terms. The European Commission want that number reduced by 5 per cent.
24.3
The percentage of unemployed in Spain; the highest in Europe
51.5
Over half of the country's under-25s are currently without work
62
The percentage fall of the Spanish stock market since its peak in 2007
€97
An unprecedented €97 billion of investor money fleed the country in the first three months of the year
972
The number of days the crisis has lasted so far. And it is showing little signs of ending any time soon

Now at the pinnacle of their powers on the football field, however, Spain as a country are on its knees. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy visited Vicente del Bosque's side in Seville on Friday and, although unpopular with many, he seemed to sum up the mood of a nation when he said simply: "We could do with some joy."
Caution ensued. And the message from Spain coach del Bosque was clear: the country's crisis cannot be solved by their football team. "Winning the Euros won't solve Spain's problems," the Salmantine shrugged.
But it may help return something of a feelgood factor to a nation very much down in the dumps amid news of constant budget cuts, bank bailouts and unprecedented unemployment.
"We're in the midst of a serious crisis and, in one sense, football is a good thing for it,'' Xavi added. "If the national team is playing well then that can also have an effect on people's character. Let's see if we can provide some joy for the people.''
Football's force cannot be underestimated. Sport brings joy to the people and has served to lift morale in many a country before - even if only temporarily. Brazil's 1970 World Cup win and Argentine's 1978 success helped their respective populations through the atrocities of military dictatorships, while Chile's impressive run in 2010 raised spirits after the devastating earthquake earlier that year.
Spain's modern-day side may not have ever expected to see things so bad, but their 1964 triumph had come in the depressing days of the Franco era, and represented a big boost for the Spanish people - much like Real Madrid's stunning successes on the continent in the same decade.
Almost one in four Spaniards are currently without work, while many struggle to survive on the bare minimum. The current unemployment rate of 24.3 per cent is the highest in Europe and those in work are not necessarily much better off. Times are hard, so while Euro 2012 may not solve the country's crisis, it may just lift the mood. And any sort of joy is welcome in Spain right now.
The reigning world and European champions were spared what would have been an embarrassing and confidence-sapping draw by David Silva's 84th-minute strike
Jun 4, 2012 12:42:00 AM
By Mark Doyle
Spain boss Vicente del Bosque criticised his troops for a "sluggish" display against China on Sunday night but still felt that there were some positives to emerge from the 1-0 win.
The reigning world and European champions laboured for long periods in Seville but finally made the breakthrough six minutes from time, when David Silva converted Andres Iniesta's cut-back.
However, just a week before they kick off their Euro 2012 campaign against Italy, Del Bosque admitted that his side had performed well below their brilliant best.
"We were slower than usual, they left us little space and we were sluggish," the former Real Madrid coach told reporters shortly after the friendly.
"But we knew China would be a strong rival in the fight for the ball but they not only have defended well, they also fought back [on the counterattack].
"But, in the second half, we played with more people in attack and they [China] were more weary."
Del Bosque was enthused, though, by the fact that many of his Barcelona stars looked so fresh at the end of a season which only ended for them on May 25, with their Copa del Rey triumph over Athletic Bilbao.
"I am very pleased with [Gerard] Pique, Xavi, Iniesta and especially [Sergio] Busquets."
As well as Italy, Spain also have Republic of Ireland and Croatia for company in Euro 2012 Group C.
'It will be a struggle' - Robbie Fowler on England's chances at Euro 2012
The former Liverpool star believes the Three Lions will find it tough against the bigger sides in the competition, and says that Steven Gerrard will be a key player for them
Jun 3, 2012 9:15:00 PM
By Patrick Lim and Chan Hong Hin
Former England striker Robbie Fowler has stated that the Three Lions will struggle to go far in Euro 2012, but says that they are a better side for having Steven Gerrard as captain.
The national team have been dealt significant injury blows this week, with Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and Gary Cahill forced out of the competition, and Fowler thinks it will be a tall order for them to compete against some of the bigger teams.
"It will be tough for them [England] to win it," the former England international told reporters.
"There are many other good teams out there, such as Germany, Spain and Netherlands. Even France has the potential to mix it up. On paper and on the pitch, they all look a better team than England.
"While of course I'm hoping they do well and go far in the tournament, but to be honest, I think it will be a struggle.
"Our key player has to be Steven Gerrard. I've played with him and had him as my captain. He's a fantastic player and any side with him in it is definitely be a better side.
"England are already missing Wayne Rooney which will be a big loss, so it will be down to the other players to stand up and be counted."
The former Liverpool striker was in Singapore as part of Courts wider efforts to promote football to the local community, and was pleased with the recent appointment of Brendan Rodgers as manager at the Anfield club.
He added: "I think it is a good appointment.
"His record at Swansea last season was fantastic. I hope he'll come into Liverpool and get them playing the right way, because a club like Liverpool deserves to be high up in the league.
"In my book, it is a great appointment by the club.
"I don't believe [his] age is much of a problem. You know what they say about players, 'If you're young enough and good enough, then age does not really matter'. The same should apply to managers and Brendan Rodgers."
Fowler recently made the move to Asia to play for Muangthong United, where he was briefly named player/manager, but left the club and has admitted that the standard was not the greatest, but was far better than he had expected it to be.
"Well, it’s not Premier League standard if that’s what you’re asking," he said.
"But there are some technically gifted players, as skilled as any player I've seen.
"The football system here just needs a little bit of tweaking because Southeast Asian football definitely has potential to improve. The standard that I have seen so far is good, far better than I expected!"

Hodgson & FA 'disgraceful' for snubbing Rio Ferdinand - representative
The Manchester United defender has been overlooked after Gary Cahill's withdrawal from the Euro 2012 squad, with Liverpool's inexperienced Martin Kelly called up to the team
Jun 3, 2012 8:15:00 PM
By Joe Doyle
A representative for Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand has blasted Roy Hodgson and the FA for snubbing the defender after Gary Cahill's withdrawal from the England squad for Euro 2012, as Liverpool's Martin Kelly was called up instead.
Cahill was ruled out of the tournament earlier on Sunday afternoon after it was revealed he had fractured his jaw in two places during the 1-0 win over Belgium at Wembley, but Hodgson chose to go for the young Liverpool right-back over more experienced options such as Ferdinand or Manchester City's Micah Richards.
"[Frank] Lampard, [John] Terry, [Gareth] Barry, [Steven] Gerrard; all ageing but they go to the tournament," said Jamie Moralee, Ferdinand's representative.
"Why is Rio different? To treat a player that has captained and served his country 81 times [in this manner] is nothing short of disgraceful. Total lack of respect from Hodgson and the FA as far as I am concerned."
Kelly made just 12 appearances for Liverpool last season, and only received his international debut in the final two minutes of the 1-0 win over Norway at the end of May.
The youngster's call-up also means that the England squad now contains six Liverpool players, ahead of Manchester United who boast a contingent of four, followed by Manchester City with three.
It’s deja vu all over again: Why England are always injury-ravaged before every major tournament
The absence of Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard shows just how much club commitments take their toll on the national team as Euro 2012 looms

Michel Platini is of the opinion that England go from lions in the autumn to lambs in the spring and, as the injuries problems mount for Roy Hodgon, the Uefa president looks as though he will be proved right at Euro 2012.
The tournament is not even under way yet and the Three Lions are struggling due to the loss of potentially key players, in the shape of Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard due to wear-and-tear, and now Gary Cahill with a broken jaw.
Even though he was out of favour under Andre Villas-Boas, Lampard played on 53 occasions throughout the season as Chelsea pursued Champions League and FA Cup glory, before picking up a thigh injury during England training.
The much-derided Barry, meanwhile, played 50 times as Manchester City secured their first ever Premier League title before suffering an abdominal injury in the recent friendly against Norway.
If that was not bad enough, Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker’s participation in Poland and Ukraine has also been in doubt due to concerns over his Achilles troubles.
Furthermore, the sight of John Terry and Steven Gerrard making early exits from England’s friendly with Belgium at Wembley last Saturday would have had Hodgson fretting about having to beg, steal and borrow players ahead of Wednesday’s flight to Poland.
It would seem England's walking wounded are all paying the price for coming from a country that puts the domestic scene before the international - Premier League football is arguably the most eye-catching in the world but also the most demanding.

Former Newcastle, Bolton and Sunderland defender Robbie Elliott, who is now a performance coach with Nike, believes that his compatriots have already been pushed to the limit.
"When you get to the international stage you are working with elite athletes," Elliott told Goalcom.
"They are the cream of the crop, thoroughbred racehorses. Throughout the season they have been asked to peak maybe over 50 times for each game. Athletes preparing for the Olympics will have structured the last four years to peak at next month’s event. Footballers don’t have that luxury.
"The Premier League and Champions League are intense competitions where players are pushed to the limits. Players are so highly trained that they are always bordering on the edge of illness or injury. “There is only a short break between the end of the season and the [England] team coming into camp. Some of these players have been on a similar schedule for the last few years.
"It may be due to an accumulation of not enough rest throughout the season and the summer internationals. You also have to factor in travel. "Also, these players might have knocks that perhaps at club level they could manage but the fact that a squad was not definitely picked they might have pushed themselves that little but more to make the first team."
FIFA Medical Committee Chairman Dr Michel D'Hoogh says there is a widespread concern over players playing too many games. "There is an issue of overload and we discussed that point with 187 doctors from 187 national associations at a medical conference and we asked them all what is your ideal number of games over a whole season and the answer was between 40 and 60 games," Dr D'Hoogh also told Goalcom.
"There was nobody who spoke about football being played for more than 60 games and you know that there are some players that are loaded with 80 or sometimes 90 games a year so this is too much. I could give examples of players all over the world.
"If you don’t believe me then ask Franz Beckenbauer who said before the World Cup in 2002 in Japan and South Korea that it was the World Cup of fatigue because the World Cup was just after the club competitions and there was no time for the players to relax due to the atmospheric conditions there.
"There is an internal fight between the medical arguments and the economical arguments because economically it is good that the players play as much as possible and you can understand why.
"I always have to fight against that and sometimes I lose and sometimes I win. I won, for instance, when they decided to take away one of the stages of the Europa League. I think this is one of my only victories."
Dr D'Hoogh and his peers will be looking for long-term strategies but Hodgson and his medical team are focused solely on Euro 2012 as they seek to make sure they do not lose any more key figures.
The Wembley warm-up in front of the media ahead of the Belgium game may have been a no-holds-barred affair but Hodgson knows he must strike a balance between keeping training lively and making sure there is no repeat of the collision between Rio Ferdinand and Emile Heskey that ruled the former out of the World Cup in 2010.
There is nothing Hodgson - who is known for very intense and rigorous training regimes - can do in terms of his players’ overall fitness so he will focus on fine-tuning. They need short intense sessions to maintain sharpness.
The fact he cancelled a training camp in Spain shows that he is keen to make sure there is no burnout ahead of this summer’s tournament. Another big problem will be making sure that his players do not get bored ahead of their first game against France next Monday.
Norway defender Brede Hangeland, who plies his trade in England with Fulham, saw signs that those with Three Lions on their chest are wilting.
"It’s a good England team but they look a little worn after a long season," he said after last month's friendly in Oslo. "It’s not good preparation for the Euros to play such a tough season. Even if it was a friendly, you could see that the English players need a break."
England coach Gary Neville has been around the block a few times with the national side but he had never come across a manager who gave his players ten days off before a big competition. Time will tell if Hodgson is a visionary.
I'll support England... from the pub! Rio backs Roy's boys despite latest snub
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 20:32 GMT, 4 June 2012 | UPDATED: 21:37 GMT, 4 June 2012
Rio Ferdinand has pledged his support to England's Euro 2012 campaign despite the controversy that has surrounded the Manchester United defender's continued absence from the squad.Ferdinand's camp had reacted furiously to the former England captain again being overlooked following the enforced withdrawal of defender Gary Cahill, who suffered a fractured jaw during Saturday's Wembley defeat of Belgium.
Rather than call Ferdinand, 33, into the squad, England boss Roy Hodgson selected inexperienced Liverpool defender Martin Kelly, prompting Jamie Moralee, Ferdinand's long-time friend and business partner, to accuse the new manager of 'a total lack of respect'.
Overlooked - again: Rio Ferdinand has not been called into the Euro 2012 squad despite injuries
Debate over the decision has been raging, but Ferdinand insisted he would be fully supportive of the team in Ukraine and Poland. He Tweeted: 'Just so we dont get it twisted ere....i'll be in a pub somewhere supporting England this summer! Love the lads!'For Hodgson, though, the issue will not just go away and he will face yet more questions at the first available opportunity after England arrive at their Krakow base on Wednesday.
On initially selecting the squad, the former Liverpool and West Brom boss dismissed Ferdinand's absence as being for 'footballing reasons'. However, many felt there were concerns about Ferdinand's ability to get along with John Terry in light of Terry's impending court case for alleged racist remarks to Ferdinand's brother Anton at Loftus Road in October. Terry denies the charge against him.The decision to pick Kelly saw Ferdinand Tweeting 'what reasons???' before Moralee's damning verdict.'Lampard, Terry, Barry, Gerrard; all ageing but they go to the tournament,' he said. 'Why is Rio different?
Speaking out: Jamie Moralee, a representative of Ferdinand's has blasted the FA and Roy Hodgson
'To treat a player that has captained and served his country 81 times [in this manner] is nothing short of disgraceful. [It's a] total lack of respect from Hodgson and the FA as far as I am concerned.'On Friday, Hodgson had bemoaned the loss of 143 caps' worth of experience in Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry, who have both been ruled out through injury.
Now he finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to explain how Ferdinand, with such vast experience, is being ignored on football grounds in favour of someone who made just 12 Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season.
Former England boss Steve McClaren had some sympathy for Hodgson, believing that he is in a no-win situation.
Time for a break: Ferdinand has been away on holiday in Spain
Keeping fit: Ferdinand played in a charity football game in Bangkok
McClaren told Sky Sports News: '(He's tried) to avoid the media circus that would go on and on and on. Imagine the media attention surrounding John Terry and Rio Ferdinand every day, at the hotel, stories coming out in training.'I think what Roy has had to do is choose between the two of them; he's chosen John Terry.
'I'm sure in an ideal world, without all the controversy around, it he would take both.
Ouch! Gary Cahill suffered a double fracture to his jaw and will miss the Euros
'Rio is a fantastic player, he had a great season for Manchester United. John Terry is such a focal point for England as a team, as a squad, as a captain and as a leader.
'He (Hodgson) is in a lose-lose situation. He's made that decision. It's always going to be controversial but he has had to be strong and he has had to make it.
'The most important thing is when you are together for six weeks in a hotel and you are cocooned within that environment, if you've got anything going on within that squad that hampers the harmony and togetherness that has to be avoided.'

'Not a chance' Rio left at home for 'footballing reasons', says Fowler

Robbie Fowler has joined the debate over Rio Ferdinand's Euro 2012 snub by claiming there was 'not a chance' the defender was left out by England for 'footballing reasons'.
Omission: Ferdinand
England boss Roy Hodgson faced a barrage of questions when naming his squad on May 16 about whether he had snubbed Ferdinand because of concerns the centre-back would not be able to get along with John Terry, in light of Terry's impending court case for alleged racist remarks to Ferdinand's brother Anton at Loftus Road in October. Terry denies the charge against him.
When Gary Cahill was ruled out of Euro 2012 with a double fracture of his jaw on Sunday, Liverpool's Martin Kelly was called up as his replacement.Fowler - who played with Ferdinand for both England and Leeds, claimed in his PaddyPower.com blog: 'There's not a chance Rio Ferdinand was left out of the England squad for "footballing reasons". Not a chance. The public knows that too.
'The reason is Rio's brother, Anton, was allegedly racially abused by John Terry.
'I've read that Ferdinand got in touch with Hodgson shortly after he was appointed as manager to say he was willing to play in the same England team as Terry.
'Rio was then overlooked for the Euro 2012 23-man squad for what was described as 'purely a footballing decision' by Hodgson.
Old pals: Robbie Fowler tangles with Ferdinand in 2001
'It's the choice by Hodgson to replace the injured Chelsea centre-half Gary Cahill with Martin Kelly that has really caused the backlash now.
'I played with Rio Ferdinand at Leeds United. He is a fantastic player who reads the game brilliantly. He started 30 Premier League games for Manchester United last season and nearly won the league. Footballing reasons?
'Rio is a quieter defender than John Terry. Terry is more dominant, and yes, England need that. Roy Hodgson doesn't want to concede goals. I would still have taken Ferdinand.
'But this looks like the end of his England career, to be honest. That said, I'm delighted Martin Kelly has got the call-up. He's a great young lad who has come up through the ranks at Liverpool.'
