Serious ESM Goh Would Have Applauded Stupid Sinkie If He Suggested Funding Elderly Pension By Upping GST!

According to an audio recording shared by a local online publication, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong appears to have slammed a suggestion to fund elderly pension by cutting million-dollar ministerial salaries.

The former prime minister of Singapore was apparently speaking to grassroots leaders and Government partners at an event on Thursday when he asserted that “ministers are not paid enough!” and that it is “very populist” to demand that ministerial pay be slashed instead.

ESM Goh had been responding to this question: “Can we have some sort of an elderly pensions fund? Perhaps, can I say, cut a bit on the defence? Or perhaps even from the ministers with million-dollar salaries?”

Sharing that he would have applauded the man who asked the question if he suggested that elderly pension could be funded by hiking the Goods and Services Tax (GST), ESM Goh allegedly responded:

“Somebody must pay for the pension and you got it right. We’ll have to take it from somewhere else. If you had suggested we up GST by 2 per cent, I would have applauded you. Seriously. Because you’re taxing the whole society to support the older ones. But you did not.

“But you said cut the defence. 1 per cent is enough. On top of that, you said cut ministers’ salaries. That’s very populist. I’m telling you the ministers are not paid enough. And down the road, we’re going to have a problem getting people to join the Government. Because civil servants now earn more than ministers. Are you aware of that?

“And where do we get future office holders from? From the private sector? I tried for the last election. Two of them – one earning $5 million and one earning $10 million a month. To be minister for $1 million?

“So where do you want to get your ministers from? From people who warn only $500,000 a year? You’re going to end up with very mediocre people who can’t even earn a million dollars outside. Is it good for you or is it worse for us?”

ESM Goh’s alleged comments on slashing ministerial pay may be a blow to some who called on him to “do a Mahathir,” given his repeated allusions on social media to the 93-year-old Malaysian leader who united the opposition and toppled the incumbent at the Malaysia General Election 2018.

ESM Goh’s posts referring to Dr Mahathir come a few months after an exchange between ESM Goh and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong led netizens to speculate that an internal conflict may be brewing between the pair.

Meanwhile, netizens responding to the audio recording felt that EMS Goh is “still living in his ivory tower” and noted that any image that ministers serve the people to give back to society instead of earning a fat paycheck is effectively destroyed with these remarks:

The grassroots leader who suggested funding the sinkie pioneers by cutting ministers' pay or defence budget is either an idiot or an oppie traitor. He's a disgrace to us grassroots leaders.

What i want to know is that people like JohnTan who appluad Goh's comments' their salary got rise or not?

Is it every time they bark 10 cents or 1 dollar? Could be a business opportunity, whenever Goh talks, we send 10 dogs there, then buy more from the spca so that the next time we can send a 100 to bark all at once.

The PAP model is broken. Their only draw is high salary. The notion of public service has been totally eroded by them. Even with a $1m pay cheque, they can't convince top talent to serve under them and their agenda. Their narrative is no longer a compelling one for the truely able and talented with a desire to serve.

Just look at Trump's cabinet since inauguration. Many of his top men have taken huge salary cuts from the private sector to serve in government. Even he could get great men and women to serve. Now that's a robust system that can withstand even the incompetence of the chief.

What we narrative have we got? Meritocracy will set you free?

Currently they have mediocre people. If they pay less, they will end up with VERY mediocre people.
