Chitchat EDB Scholar and the 2 fridges at Blk 441, Tampines St 43

I disagree. At 18 years of age, they are just kids. Teenagers. Many haven't even had sex. Much less have a spouse, children, manage household finances, responsibilities for the family etc.

Why choose at 18 years of age kids who have limited experience in life to become future head honchos of HUGE organizations making decisions that affect thousands? Ridiculous.

When you mean "great people" what are you referring to? I went to RI and RJC and know some of these scholars. Frankly many of them are just arrogant self-indulgent assholes.

Just do away with the government scholarship program. In fact, ban all scholarships in Singapore. I was going to say let the private sector give scholarships then I realized vast majority of companies in SG are GLCs (go figure).

Any successful organization, company, country and what have you needs a willing capable leader who can get the job done. They choose from the ones who come for the job interview be it an actual interview, an election process etc. Not some crazy appointment from a pool of so called geniuses pre-selected at age 18.

It is the dumbest idea ever. The only reason why such a system exists is to foster nepotism and cronyism. That was LKY's intent all along for those of you who still think a scholarship program even makes sense.

That is not true. At 18, you are able to identify those with leadership qualities. Anyway, the scholarships I have in mind are meant as a reward for excelling in school in multiple areas. There are no other considerations, no bonds, etc. The scholas are welcome to get work experience overseas and then decide if they wish to return to SG. If they do, they are treated same as everyone else and get hired or promoted based on their own ability and achievements. I am particularly against grooming them for leadership roles if you had taken the time to understand my post.

Bondless scholarships. That's what you are referring to.

There are such scholarships out there. But they are small in number. Usually because some companies do it for charity or as part of their social responsibility outreach. They already exist. You want the government to fund more of these?

As you should know some well to do families get the scholarships and break the bond. The scholarship is used as a feather in the CV.

I disagree with your view about 18 years old showing "leadership qualities" in Singapore. Many of these scholars come from premier schools. The kids they interact and deal with are in their same economic-social standing.

You want to know why your current leaders are so out of touch with the man on the street? This is why. 18 year old kids from RI, RJC, Hwa Chong, VJC, NJC, ACJC etc.....they do not hang out with the kids on the street. From 18 years old, they are sent into NS with the A level cohort. Go into OCS with scholar cohort (also A levels), then sent to be in command positions and heavily rely on the SGT to communicate with the men. What interaction with the man on the street? Leadership? In the land of the blind the one eyed jack is king. And people who think 18 year olds can show "leadership qualities" enough to lead a country.....BAH. What hardships have 18 year olds gone through? Oh and please don't tell me they took exams, do ECA .....it's a joke.

18 years olds in Singapore know jack shit about leadership. Heck most of these scholars have never washed a toilet, cooked a meal for themselves, washed their own clothes, ironed their own clothes, mop the floor, wash the car, vaccuum the house. Leadership? Don't joke lah.

Singaporeans...despite all the bravado talk about how THEY know better......are just as brainwashed as other Singaporeans. They just don't realize it cos they are all the same frogs in the same well.

Time will tell. Time will tell.

No need time sir doctor. Now is always a good time. While I can understand your sentiments, I am unconvinced by the facts and reasoning. So you see, even in the unlikely event that everything unravels, people would still be none the wiser.

Very good point.

They know it's broken, they also know no country has done it but no one wants to touch it especially the scholars who feed on it. Some have managed to put their kids thru it. An attempt was made to bring in performers from the private sector in mid career in mid 1990. Only 2 were selected, one did not accept the other left a few years and he made valuable contacts within the elites and now runs a fund mangement company of his own.

There appears to be two generations of scholars.
Even a father and child who are President's Scholars
(Ko Kheng Hwa around 1973, now at EDB? and his daughter)

A silly suggestion sir. Why would someone like that want to return to Singapore? Then you end up with brain drain and sinkie cabbies running the government! How to punch above our weight? How to be corruption free?

Finally! LKY's dream of a class of landed aristocracy and administrative elite is coming true. I am relieved to know our natural aristocrats are here to guide Singapore to the next level. Majullah PAP! Majullah Singapura!
