You pay the highest salaries in the world for this?-reflects more on the people who voted him in.

No questions asked as to why there are families in self proclaimed 1st world red dot with not enough monies for food?
Is it because they cannot get jobs/or get retrenched due to foreign imports?
Is it because the govt has allowed property prices to go crazy and developers are raking in billions?

Old man conceived the SAF scholar system and held his eldest son back one year to qualify for it so that he can create a Mandarin cadre class. He has spoken about this occasionally without specifically mentioning SAF scholars. He felt that Singapore did not have a natural royalty or a landed gentry to act as bulwark for society. The current Thai royal line started with a victorious military man creating his dynasty. It did not come from heaven. At one stage he even contemplated moving from a unicameral to a bicameral system where these scholar class would occupy the upper chamber and have veto powers when they retired. He was not one to trust anyone and therefore plumbed for the Executive President where it was easier to control the outcome.

We now know that someone selected at age 18 is a bad idea and there are enough examples out there. I am sure there will be bad applies as well as poor ones but clearly if the cream at the top is sour. The decision to spread the scholar away from SAF began in 1980 and took on steam and it now includes Stat Boards and GLC. It still does not work. However the scholars are nonplussed and happily exploiting it to the hilt. Since the 1990s, we now have a premier subclass - scholar couples who have begun wielding considerable influence. Our next PM will come from this.

Nope. It's the scholar system. They choose from scholars. A lot of these are useless army generals and colonels.

And the people are impressed. I believe it is partly due to the SAF army NS system which brainwashes all males into buying this whole rank hierarchy system.

Unless you are saying that all the scholars were at the bottom of the barrel to begin with?

Then you should ask the more IMPORTANT questions. WHY HAVE A SCHOLAR PROGRAM? and HOW DO THEY CHOOSE SCHOLARS?

Singapore iS FUBAR. Having a new ruling party is one step but will change little because the civil service is also rotten with all the same scholars useless people. And then the SAF is another FUBAR organization. And then the education system. And then the worst of all is the Singaporean psyche. The most FUBAR shit hit the fan problem to overcome which I believe will never be overcome until Singapore collapses.

So there is no hope for Singapore. It will sink eventually.

You have hit the nail on the head although I do believe the majority of the scholars were great people when they were first selected (there might be a minority that get it due to connections). It is what happens after they enter the system that is flawed. They are constantly brainwashed that they are the best, cannot fail and to toe the line. After years in that kind of system, anyone would turn into a monster.

I believe we should still give out scholarships but we should not be placing any expectations on the scholars. They are free to decide if they wish to return to SG and there will be no set career path for them. They apply for a position in a company and rise through the ranks just like everyone else. That also means eliminating scholarships like the SAFOS. If they want to join SAF, they can join first and get a scholarship from SAF later.

The chinese had a scholar system which was abandoned. The criticism of the system https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_examination

the system also promoted resistance to change. Reformers charged that the set format of the "Eight-legged essay" stifled original thought and satirists portrayed the rigidity of the system in novels such as The Scholars. In the twentieth century, the New Culture Movement portrayed the examination system as a cause for China's weakness in such stories as Lu Xun's "Kong Yiji." Some have suggested that limiting the topics prescribed in examination system removed the incentives for Chinese intellectuals to learn mathematics or to conduct experimentation, perhaps contributing to the Great Divergence, in which China's scientific and economic development fell behind Europe.[35]

LKY may have had "some" good ideas but he was responsible for Spore's current problems e.g. stop at two policy, scholarship system, putting LHL & Ho Ching in charge, ....

Ref your point about scholars being great when they were first selected. From the very start of the scholar program, there were issues. We have scholars that committed suicide during their studies and when they first returned. We had one President scholar who hanged himself in an Army Camp. We had scholars who failed the wrangler program early and were moved. 18 is too young an age to make any decent judgement on someone's potential. I dont there is any country in the World where a scholar is identified into a closed program at age 18.

Old man for nearly years used have a psychologist called Fred do an assessment of scholars to spot the ones for political office. He believed in Fred implicitly. The scholars in the midst of their career would dutifully turn up at Woodbridge for their day of reckoning. I always wondered how the country depended on one man to make the call. Fred retired many years ago and is adjunct academic in alocal university.

It appears that HSK's wife is a scholar.
What about the wives of CCS, TCJ, etc.?

I disagree. At 18 years of age, they are just kids. Teenagers. Many haven't even had sex. Much less have a spouse, children, manage household finances, responsibilities for the family etc.

Why choose at 18 years of age kids who have limited experience in life to become future head honchos of HUGE organizations making decisions that affect thousands? Ridiculous.

When you mean "great people" what are you referring to? I went to RI and RJC and know some of these scholars. Frankly many of them are just arrogant self-indulgent assholes.

Just do away with the government scholarship program. In fact, ban all scholarships in Singapore. I was going to say let the private sector give scholarships then I realized vast majority of companies in SG are GLCs (go figure).

Any successful organization, company, country and what have you needs a willing capable leader who can get the job done. They choose from the ones who come for the job interview be it an actual interview, an election process etc. Not some crazy appointment from a pool of so called geniuses pre-selected at age 18.

It is the dumbest idea ever. The only reason why such a system exists is to foster nepotism and cronyism. That was LKY's intent all along for those of you who still think a scholarship program even makes sense.

How would a meritocratic system of selection lead to nepotism and cronyism? Absolute nonsense!

You should know by now that to excel in the academic arena in Singapore requires resources. Eg tuition

The number of students with perfect academic scores also far outnumbers the scholarship positions. Hence the selection process is subjective.

Put it this way, when you say "meritocratic system of selection", that is just a politically correct mumbo jumbo term created to fool you.

So then.....General Elections are also a "meritocratic system of selection" of leaders right?

So naive you Singaporeans.

Of course it has to be subjective! Somebody has to decide who is better when everybody is just as good. This is not a race or a weightlifting competition. It is very delicate selection, like ingredients for cooking a good French meal. All the ingredients are of the highest quality, and at 18 they are definitely fresh! The fact that there is some subjectivity in selection, some inherent advantages in making the grade does not detract from the fact that it is a highly meritocratic selection process. Surely the process cannot be blamed for perceived nepotism and cronyism. And how does it lead to nepotism and cronyism? This one does not compute.
