HSK says that might is not right.

Might is not right. It should never be. Under no circumstances can an unprovoked invasion be justified.
Singapore strongly condemns the invasion of Ukraine. We are gravely concerned by the deteriorating situation and the loss of innocent lives. We hope offensive military action will cease immediately, and that humanitarian assistance can reach those in need.
We will act in concert with like-minded countries to impose appropriate sanctions on Russia. This might come at some cost and implications to us, but we must be prepared to stand up for our principles and do what is right. Singapore will also be providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Vivian Balakrishnan and Gan Kim Yong spoke on these issues in Parliament today.
But this issue is much larger than Ukraine. The security and sovereignty of all countries, big and small, must be respected. This is existential for a small and young nation like Singapore. This is also why we must continue to invest in a strong SAF — no one owes us our way of life, we must ourselves defend Singapore.

HSK comments about a budget he did not present.

Parliament today supported Budget Statement 2022.
At stake was how we are funding our plans to build a better future for all Singaporeans. Revenue and expenditure are different sides of the same coin. It is easy to propose spending more, but much harder to raise revenue. As Parliamentarians, we cannot shy away from the responsibility of being upfront with Singaporeans.
To fund these plans, we will need to raise GST and other taxes. It is expedient to suggest spending more from reserves, but this would not be responsible. If our forefathers had taken the easy way out, we would have no past reserves to speak of. We would have no buffer from this crisis, much less a steady stream of investment income to tap on. In his round-up speech, Minister Lawrence Wong also explained why we cannot just ignore consumption taxes and put the entire burden on income and wealth taxes.
Raising GST is not popular and there is no good time to do so. It is a difficult decision, but it is the responsible thing to do. We will cushion the impact on all Singaporeans with an enhanced Assurance Package. Through GST Vouchers, we effectively have a tiered GST system where the well-to-do pay more and the lower income pay the least.
Budget 2022 is an important milestone that puts Singapore on a robust and sustainable fiscal footing to build a brighter and better future for everyone. I am glad to have joined my fellow PAP MPs and NMPs in doing what’s right by voting in support of the Statement.

HSK is happy for HSA.

Heng Swee Keat

Happy that our Health Sciences Authority has been awarded the highest recognition for its medicines regulatory system by the World Health Organization (WHO). Singapore is the first WHO member state to achieve this accreditation, and it reflects the high international regard for HSA’s work.
HSA’s professionalism gives confidence to Singaporeans that medicines that have been approved for use here are of good quality, safe, and effective. At the same time, HSA’s pro-innovation regulatory stance supports innovation in our biomedical industry, while safeguarding public health. During this pandemic, HSA worked with other partners in our research ecosystem to accelerate the roll-out of homegrown innovations such as the Fortitude and Resolute test kits. These innovations have benefited not just Singapore, but the region and the world.
Congratulations to the team at HSA!

HSK enjoys reading.

Reading has always been a big part of my childhood, a habit that I still enjoy today. In those days, we could only borrow 4 books at a time. You can now borrow up to 16.
By going digital, the National Library Board, Singapore is making reading even more accessible for Singaporeans and opening up many possibilities. I got a glimpse of the future of our libraries when I visited the LAB25 – Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025 – Showcase at Parliament House yesterday.
From accessing digital publications through QR codes, to the use of assistive technologies to translate visual images to audio for people who are visually impaired, our libraries are evolving from standalone physical spaces to being accessible anywhere!
I hope that these transformative changes will encourage more people to read, discover and grow. My thanks to the NLB team for constantly innovating and adapting to better serve our people in this digital age.

We concluded the debate on the #SGBudget2022 statement this week.
Last weekend, I dropped by Bedok Town Centre together with my fellow East Coast Advisers to check in on how our heartland merchants and hawkers are coping.
As COVID-19 cases remain high, some shared that their businesses continued to be impacted by lower footfall. In this year’s Budget, the $500 million Jobs and Business Support Package will provide support to small and medium businesses, including hawkers.
I also shared about the Household Support Package with residents I met along the way. Impacted workers can apply for the COVID-19 Recovery Grant, which has been extended till the end of this year.
I hope these measures will provide meaningful support to our businesses and households.

Enjoyed speaking with this cheerful store owner, who shared that her fashion apparel business is doing well. I was totally surprised when she told me how old she was (she doesn’t look her age at all!), and she shared with me how she stays active and youthful.

HSK introduces the sakura season.

Heng Swee Keat

Singapore may not have four seasons, but we do have our version of the Sakura season.
The Pink Mempat blooms seasonally, usually around March and August. The tree sheds its leaves, replacing its crown with a vivid display of pink fragrant flowers.
Glad to see that this year’s season has started!

HSK visits Micron Singapore.

Heng Swee Keat

10 hrs ·
Many of you are familiar with solid state drives and microSDs that are found in your computers and electronic devices. Singapore manufactures a critical component in these devices, also known as NAND flash memory. These are typically smaller than a fingernail and can store large amounts of data.
I visited the Micron Singapore Fabrication Facility in Woodlands that produces these components recently. This cutting-edge production facility accounts for almost all of Micron’s global NAND production. The fabs are highly automated, applying many technologies from the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
But Micron has not just invested in technology. It has also placed great emphasis on developing their people – enabling them to flourish, pursue their engineering interests, and grow with the company.
I am glad Singapore can make an indelible contribution to the digital revolution, and in that process create many good opportunities for our people.
