East Coast Plan unveiled

HSK plays badminton.

Heng Swee Keat

1 hr·

Yesterday, the East Coast team and I played badminton at Singapore EXPO & MAX Atria Atria with a few of our national badminton players. I had a few friendly rallies with Olympian shuttler Loh Kean Yew and had a good workout in the process.
There are now 20 indoor badminton courts at Singapore EXPO — making it the largest badminton hall in Singapore! Richard Tan, whose company is behind these badminton courts, shared with me that he is an avid badminton player. He embarked on this project as courts were not easy to come by, especially on weekends.
This project is part of the rejuvenation of the area, as Singapore EXPO seeks to reinvent its spaces and adapt to the pandemic. Large physical exhibitions and mass events have been hard hit by the pandemic. So I am glad that we have repurposed the halls that used to hold these events into more vibrant recreational spaces for the community. There is even an outdoor fun-kart circuit (KF1), indoor badminton courts, and a Timbre+ food park.
This is a new bright spot in our East Coast community. If you are living or happen to be in the East, you can consider exploring this new space.

Badminton enthusiasts, this is for you! Singapore EXPO Hall 6 houses 20 indoor badminton courts — making it the largest badminton hall in Singapore. These courts are designed with low-impact flooring to protect the players’ joints from injuries. The shock absorbing sprung badminton floor also enables players to perform at their best.

There is something for everyone at the Timbre+ food park! The 800-seater food park, depending on prevailing SMM guidelines, offers a diversity of food and casual eats. There will be a drive-through curbside service for you to ‘pick and go’ your favourite food without having to park your car. Stay tuned for its opening soon! — with Dr Maliki Osman, Jessica Tan Soon Neo, Cheryl Chan 陈慧玲 and Tan Kiat How.

Spoke to Kleo Koh and Dennet Yap — both of them are East Coast residents who have successfully pivoted and adapted to their new roles at Constellar Holdings. From the usual bricks and mortar business operations, both of them have upskilled and leveraged technology to enhance digital customer experience and strategise business collaborations at Singapore EXPO. — with Jessica Tan Soon Neo and Tan Kiat How.

HSK looks forward to the start of the Paralympic Games.

Heng Swee Keat shared a video from the playlist Team Singapore - One Day.

10 hrs·

Looking forward to the start of the Paralympic Games today. Team Singapore will be sending its largest contingent yet — of 10 athletes.
I watched and read some of their stories in the lead up to the Games, like this video on Paralympics debutante Sophie Soon. Despite suffering from cone rod dystrophy which led to vision impairment, she continued to pursue her passion in swimming, never giving up.
Like Sophie, our para athletes learned to make the most of their disabilities and overcame many challenges, to represent Singapore in the sporting arena. They truly embody what it means to be determined, tenacious and resilient.
To all our athletes — including our debutantes Sophie, powerlifter Nur 'Aini, cyclist Steve Tee and swimmer Wei Soong — I wish you all the best in the Games ahead. My best wishes also go to Yip Pin Xiu as she defends her Olympic titles.
Go #OneTeamSG!

HSK is proud of gold medal winner Pin Xiu.

Managed to catch the live competition with Edwin Tong on MeWatch this afternoon! Congratulations, Pin Xiu — proud of you!
Looking forward to catching more exciting action from our athletes. Go #OneTeamSG!

HSK joins the IRO to celebrate its contributions to Singapore's inter-faith harmony.

In May 2016, I was invited by Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society to launch the “Harmony Truck” which would go around Singapore to promote racial and religious harmony. A few days before the event, I suffered a stroke. After I recovered, I was very moved to learn that religious leaders from the Inter-Religious Organisation, Singapore came together to pray for my recovery.
In many societies, issues of religion and race can be divisive. In Singapore, I am grateful that religious leaders of multiple faiths are able to work together. Many of you would be familiar with the ten religious leaders from the IRO performing blessings at the OCS Commissioning Parades and the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony at Kranji War Memorial. This is a powerful symbol of our religious harmony.
This afternoon, I was delighted to join the IRO to celebrate its contributions to Singapore’s inter-faith harmony over the last 72 years. Over the years, the IRO has helped to build greater mutual understanding and trust. I look forward to the IRO and other community groups playing an even greater role in the years ahead, in nurturing our precious harmony.

My heartfelt congratulations to Sister Maria Lau for receiving the IRO award in recognition of her contributions in fostering inter-religious harmony in Singapore. Sister Maria set up the Women of Faith Group in Inter-Religious Organisation, Singapore and built a network of women committed to interfaith unity — kudos to her hard work!

The Friends of Inter-Religious Organisation, Singapore is a collective of organisations that share common values and have supported IRO’s interfaith objectives. Honourable patron of IRO, ESM Goh Chok Tong and I welcomed IRO’s ‘friends’ — (clockwise) Far East Organisation, Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society, OnePeople.sg and Roses of Peace.

HSK visits National Research Foundation Singapore.

Heng Swee Keat

11 hrs·

One of our goals at National Research Foundation Singapore is to encourage more young people, especially women, to study and work in research and science. Was delighted to be guided through SCIEX’s manufacturing plant by a team of impressive women yesterday.
Meena (left) showed me how her team puts together over 1,000 parts of a product – one loose connection, and the instrument is in trouble. Ban Choon (behind me) and Mazliana (right) took me through the assembly and testing processes for tuning the instrument to be up to standards.
And what were they making together? An Echo-Mass Spectrometry instrument, one of the fastest and most accurate diagnostics equipment that can be used in a variety of applications such as drug discovery and design.
Meena, Ban Choon and Mazliana told us about the many opportunities they have today to learn, do well, and even give back to the community. Their personal stories match the progress we have made in our RIE journey. Our work in research is as much about creating great opportunities for our people to grow and excel, as it is about solving problems and creating value for the world.
It is always a pleasure to meet people who are passionate about their work. Best of luck to them, and the whole team at SCIEX, as they continue to innovate and collaborate to grow our R&D ecosystem, and to offer good learning and growing opportunities to our people.

Taking a closer look at the SCIEX ECHO MS in testing, which is SCIEX’s first product developed and manufactured right here in Singapore. Mazliana (right), Assistant Manager, Production, SCIEX, started out in semiconductors, and is energised to work in the life sciences.

“Every day is exciting!”. It’s not often you hear someone talk about their work like this. Mazliana does just that and insists that it is true, backing up her enthusiasm with details of the interesting challenges and new lessons that each day at SCIEX brings.

The East Coast team distributed gift packs at Changi Airport.

Heng Swee Keat

The East Coast team was at Changi Airport this afternoon to distribute 5,000 gift packs to the airport community.
Not many people know that the East Coast team looks after the Changi area, including Changi Airport. This visit is part of the #EastCoastCares effort to recognise those on the frontline. Had the chance to chat with some of them, in person and virtually.
Also witnessed the signing of an MOU between Changi Airport Group and Changi General Hospital (CGH) to collaborate on a new Travel Wellness Program. This is part of a wider effort by my team to work with community groups, companies, and institutions in our area to create a more vibrant East Coast. More initiatives will be launched in due course.
A big thank you to all of you in the aviation community for staying strong, for continuing to adapt and persevere in these difficult circumstances. As more people around the world become vaccinated, we can look forward to the resumption of more flights and more arrivals.
#EastCoastCares
