HSK thanks grassroots volunteers for their efforts.

Our East Coast community and grassroots volunteers have been very busy the past few weeks, reaching out to as many seniors as possible to encourage them to get vaccinated.
Thanks to their efforts, more seniors are getting vaccinated. One senior who benefitted from their outreach was Mdm Mariyati. Faced with mobility issues, Braj, a community driver, and Fifi, a volunteer from M3 at Bedok, assisted Mdm Mariyati to get her vaccination. Fifi also accompanied Mdm Mariyati home safely and followed up to ensure that she felt fine after the vaccination.
This is a heartwarming example of the gotong royong spirit in Bedok, and the community effort to help increase our national vaccination rate among seniors. I am glad that through the help of our volunteers, Mdm Mariyati and some of our vulnerable seniors are fully vaccinated now. I’m also heartened by the combined efforts of all our volunteers, especially those that went the extra mile to accompany our seniors through every step of the vaccination process.

What’s heartening is that most of our volunteers are our very own residents living in East Coast! Mee Ling (left), a Bedok grassroots leader, helps to educate seniors on the importance of getting vaccinated, and also accompanies them to get vaccinated. Other volunteers go door to door around the estate to share more about the mobile vaccination programme and encourage seniors to get vaccinated.

HSK is excited about AI.

Heng Swee Keat

22 hrs ·

Have you ever unlocked your phone using face ID, asked your digital voice assistant about the weather or to load a movie on Netflix? If so, the chances are that you would have interacted with Artificial Intelligence or AI.
AI used to be a favourite theme in science fiction. But today it pervades many aspects of our daily lives, and has potential to reshape even more. I launched our National Artificial Intelligence Strategy in 2019, and am glad that we are making good headway.
One exciting initiative is the introduction of an AI marking system for the Student Learning Space (SLS) by the Ministry of Education, Singapore. It has become a valuable tool for home-based learning during this pandemic. With automated marking, our students will be able to get quick, personalised feedback, while our teachers can use the time saved to provide more detailed guidance and support. You can read more here: go.gov.sg/straitstimes-18aug
AI may sound mysterious, but ultimately, it is all about putting people at the heart of how we use technology.

HSK looks forward to a re-opened economy.

Today marks the second step in the easing of community measures. I’m glad that we are able to do so, as more people get vaccinated. As we become more COVID-resilient, we can also gradually resume more activities.
The MTF announced today that we will carefully open our borders to incoming travellers. This will include a vaccinated travel lane that will allow fully vaccinated persons to enter Singapore without serving SHN. We are starting small with two countries, and will assess and continue to calibrate our measures.
COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on the aviation sector, and other related sectors such as tourism and hospitality. We are still some time away from full recovery. But with these moves to reopen our borders in a cautious manner, we can look forward to the day when Changi Airport is bustling again.
You can read more about the other measures here, including the pilot to allow vaccinated COVID-19 patients with no or mild symptoms to isolate at home: https://go.gov.sg/moh-19aug.

HSK looks forward to the National Day Show.

Heng Swee Keat

5 hrs·

For the second year running, we celebrated a quiet National Day this year, without the usual large and boisterous gatherings. Despite this, I was heartened to see residents finding equally meaningful ways to bring the National Day festive atmosphere to the surroundings during my walkabouts.
Thanks to everyone for your contributions and effort! I look forward to the celebrations happening tomorrow at the National Day show!

HSK enjoyed watching the National Day performances.

Heng Swee Keat

NDP was first held at the Floating Platform in 2007. It was meant to be a temporary venue, while the National Stadium was being rebuilt. Over the years, Singaporeans have gotten used to celebrating National Day against the backdrop of the Marina Bay skyline. This year’s celebration at the Floating Platform will be the last for some years to come, as the venue will be redeveloped into NS Square.
This year’s Parade is slightly belated and scaled down due to the pandemic. As I watched the performances, I am reminded of the resilience and solidarity of our people. But I am also reminded about our ingenuity and ability to adapt. The Floating Platform is a piece of innovation by our engineers, designed in a way that blends in with the cityscape. And successive NDP creative directors have made the most of the stage, turning each show into a mesmerising display.
May we continue to tackle the COVID-19 crisis with solidarity and resilience, and with ingenuity and adaptation. Come whatever on the road ahead, we did it before, and we’ll do it again!

Thank you to all participants, Ministry of Defence, Singapore (MINDEF), organisers, and partners for putting together this year’s show!

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance segment, including this year’s National Day theme song, “The Road Ahead”, performed by the composer Linying, along with Shye, Sezairi, and Shabir Tabare Alam. Sezairi and Aisyah Aziz also worked on original NDP songs — “Breathing City” and “Spirits Anew”. Well done!

HSK visited Completion Products, a local SME.

Heng Swee Keat

11 hrs·

When the pandemic hit, Perumal Sathishbabu (known to his friends as Babu) felt the impact at Completion Products (CP), a local SME where he works as an Assistant Production Manager. The disruptions caused a shortage of materials and manpower, which hindered their ability to meet growing demand for their products.
Babu’s company took the opportunity to digitalise, transform workflows and processes, and even revamp its human capital strategy. As a result, CP was able to decrease cost by 30%, reduce lead time by 30 to 40%, and increase quality and customer satisfaction.
All this was part of CP’s participation in the Industry 4.0 Human Capital Initiative programme. The programme equips companies with people management and job redesign skills required for successful Industry 4.0 transformation. It was not an easy journey, but the efforts had been rewarding.
I was inspired to hear Babu’s story during my visit to CP last week. Today, Babu and the CP team continue to make use of real time data to optimise production. At a personal level, Babu is glad that he was given the opportunity to upskill. This shared journey has also brought him and his colleagues closer together.

Well done, Singapore Business Federation for spearheading the IHCI programme. CP is among other 90 companies who have benefited from the initiative. CP has found it so helpful that they have gone on to champion other companies to come on board IHCI too.

“I’m learning every day. If I don’t come to work for one day, I feel like I’ve lost something, like I’m not learning something for one day.” Babu, an Assistant Production Manager at Completion Products, shared with me about his company’s participation in the Industry 4.0 Human Capital Initiative programme, which equips companies with people management and job redesign skills required for successful Industry 4.0 transformation. It was not an easy journey, but the team at CP have found the transformation work fruitful.

I was inspired by Babu’s story during my visit to Completion Products. When asked if the transformation changes have made things better for his work. He shared that everybody on the workfloor, and the company has benefitted.

I was shown a sample of the material that binds pipes together. It may look simple but the work behind developing such material is vast. Over the years, Completion Products has continuously strengthened its research and development capabilities. This includes working with its partners and clients, and training and reskilling their employees to innovate and develop new products.

In the past, Ismail Bin Abdullah, a Quality Control Supervisor at CP, faced challenges with manual recordings of quality checks documents. With the help of the digital quality management system, the centralised data system ensures data accuracy, leading to higher customers’ satisfaction.
