East Coast Plan unveiled

HSK is starting to take a great interest in computer science.

As we harness the power of digital technology to create new opportunities, we must also ensure that this does not result in a digital divide.
I’m glad that the NUS School of Computing has taken a step in this direction with the launch of its new Centre for Computing for Social Good & Philanthropy today. The Centre will be led by Professor Ben Leong, whom I know well. It will offer an experiential learning programme for students to better understand the principles of service leadership, and a new Fellowship Programme where students can undertake community projects.
What the Centre seeks to achieve is what we hope to accomplish with the Singapore Together movement — to bring together our combined efforts and expertise to thrive in a more digital post-COVID-19 world. As we become more developed and advanced, we can also become more caring and inclusive.
Wishing the Centre and all faculty and students of NUS Computing, every success!

HSK speaks at the MENDAKI Singapore Education Symposium 2021.

Masyarakat Gemilang means Community of Success. It is also the vision of MENDAKI, which has been uplifting our Malay/Muslim community through education and training programmes.
I joined some 280 youths, educators and professionals at the MENDAKI Singapore Education Symposium 2021 this morning. We discussed what success means in a world undergoing great transformation in technology, knowledge, and jobs. How do we prepare our youths to cope with the increasing pace of change and uncertainty?
I offered three suggestions — give our youths a good foundation, nurture a habit of lifelong learning, and enable them to pursue their aspirations. I also enjoyed the lively dialogue, and a key takeaway for me was this — it is useful to ask ourselves, what is our purpose? With this clarity, you will have the motivation to persevere, even through the hard times. You will also have a better understanding of what success means to you. And you can then start building a community around your purpose, and pay it forward to those around you.
Thank you MENDAKI for organising this event. Let us keep nurturing our Masyarakat Gemilang!

Earlier this year, I met Veron Foo, a Bedok Residents’ Committee volunteer, when we were distributing goodie bags to lower-income residents in Bedok. I saw how Veron efficiently organised the distribution and worked well with other volunteers. Teamwork and communication are keys to success in operations — these are qualities that Veron has honed in her 25 years (and counting) serving in the Singapore Armed Forces.
The SAF has shown its mettle during this crisis. Our uniformed personnel have adapted quickly to support the nation’s fight against COVID-19, while continuing to perform their operational duties across land, air, and sea. With their unwavering dedication, we have built up the SAF into a strong and credible fighting force.
As we mark SAF Day today on 1 July, let us remind ourselves that our peace and security did not happen by chance. Let us also thank the generations of men and women from the SAF. My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you, and your families for your commitment and sacrifice. May you continue to keep Singapore safe. Happy SAF Day!

HSK tracks home vaccination team to Pulau Ubin.

Our COVID-19 home vaccination team went on an ‘overseas’ mission today!
They travelled across the waters to Pulau Ubin to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to residents who are homebound or less mobile, and could not make it to the vaccination centres on the mainland. I am glad these Ubin residents found this convenient, and were grateful that they could receive their vaccinations in the comfort of their own homes.
Amid the pandemic, the NParks Community Liaison team supports Ubin residents through regular house visits to check how they are coping, as well as to educate and remind them on safe management measures. They had also worked closely with the Ministry of Health, Singapore, Singapore to make this mission a success. Thank you everyone who helped make this possible and for going the extra mile to take care of Ubin residents’ well-being.

HSK celebrates Youth Day with TJC students.

Heng Swee Keat

To all our youth and young at heart, Happy Youth Day!
When I was a youth (and I believe for many youths from my generation), the top priority was to earn enough to support my family and improve their lives. Over the years, the aspirations of our youths have evolved, but the same passion and zest for life remains.
Today marks the day where we celebrate the potential and power of you(th) who are often the voices of change. I am constantly impressed and inspired by their optimism, ideas, and thoughts — their resilience and their determination to make a difference for the better.
When I met some Temasek Junior College students early this year, I was heartened by how they found it meaningful to be able to contribute to the community in their own ways. And on Youth Day, TJC students are promoting positive mental wellbeing — to build mental wellness and resilience among students — well done!
Our youth have shown that they are not just the ‘nation’s future’ but also leaders with the heart and ability to shape the present. I thank them for their contributions, and hope that they will continue to strive and add vibrancy to our shared future together!

HSK trying to sound supportive of his successor at MOF.

Last year, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I delivered a record 5 Budgets in the span of a few months. When I delivered #SGBudget2021 earlier this year, many of us hoped that we are on track to emerge stronger.
Since then, the emergence of a more infectious Delta variant has led to new waves of infection, including in Singapore. But we are in a much better position today than last year.
It was in this better position that Finance Minister Lawrence Wong delivered a Ministerial Statement on how Singapore has shifted from containment to recovery as we reopen and live with COVID-19. This is ahead of a Supplementary Supply Bill to effect the reallocation of $1.2 billion in funding for the additional support measures during the Heightened Alert period. The support measures in totality put us in a good position for recovery.
This is also Lawrence’s first Ministerial Statement in Parliament as Finance Minister. He presented a well-thought through support package, to ensure those who are most affected by the pandemic will get more help. This is a responsible, responsive move by the Government to support those who have been harder hit while safeguarding our reserves. I hope that these measures will make a difference.

I also hope that you will continue to stay safe and get vaccinated, which will enable us to live more normally with an endemic COVID-19.

Very likely that Ah Keat will step down at the next erection, he does not even have a portfolio now. The only reason why he has not stepped down now is that PAP does not want the public to think that there is discord between him and LHL.

HSK visits Advanced MedTech.

I visited the team at Advanced MedTech, a homegrown company specialising in medical devices. When the pandemic hit last year, they asked themselves how they could contribute to our fight against COVID-19.
Drawing on Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)’s Diagnostics Development Hub and DSO National Laboratories’ scientific expertise, the company used their strengths in manufacturing and commercialisation to rapidly develop and deploy the RESOLUTE Direct-Polymerase Chain Reaction diagnostic test kits across Singapore. Unlike conventional PCR tests that take 2.5 hours or longer, this test kit can be completed in an hour.
They next developed the REDAPT kit for use with RESOLUTE. This kit allows for deep throat saliva collection in place of a nasal or oral swab. As regular testing becomes a key feature of the new normal, this will improve testing experience, especially for our healthcare, frontline and essential workers.
The RESOLUTE story is an example of how a medical device company can work with other parts of our R&D ecosystem — to quickly innovate, adapt and make a concrete difference to people’s lives.
Well done to the team at Advanced MedTech and our scientists!

So will malik b able to hold the GRC?

If LHL parachutes someone into East Coast GRC, it won't be just a popular pap mp, it will have to be a ministar.

Singapore — Workers’ Party politician Nicole Seah is back on the ground again at East Coast, talking to residents at Bedok South about their concerns.

One issue that some elderly residents spoke to her about is the Tray Return Policy and the difficulties that may arise for less able-bodied persons due to its implementation.

The elderly residents raised concerns that the “stringent measures” of the policy would affect “disabled or less mobile residents,” Ms Seah wrote in a Facebook post on Monday (Jul 5).

Earlier this year, on May 14, the National Environment Agency (NEA) announced that diners would be required to return their trays and clear the litter from their tables beginning from Jun 14, with enforcement action to be taken from Sept 1 and onwards.

Those who refuse to comply would first be warned, then be given fines of as much as S$2000 for repeat offenders.

The implementation of the policy has had somewhat of a rocky rollout, with some Singaporeans saying the tray-clearing initiative solves one problem but creates another. Photos of a tray and crockery return station that was filled to the brim have spread all over social media.

Other netizens have expressed concern about how the initiative could attract birds to flock at return stations, as well as pose serious hygiene issues.

The concerns that the elderly residents Ms Seah spoke with are just the next in the line of issues that have arisen with the implementation of the policy.
Ms Seah wrote that she has been going around Bedok South, visiting residents in HDB blocks, and helping to file a request with the East Coast Town Council regarding pipe fixtures.

She and fellow politician Kenneth Foo, along with a team of WP volunteers, went to the different blocks to visit residents.

“Many who were out and about had been vaccinated and were looking forward to a semblance of normality. Some stallholders were also cheered by the greater number of customers in recent days,” she wrote.

With regard to the elderly residents’ concerns with the Tray Return Policy, Ms Seah wrote that she believes that “some leeway” would be allowed for people who would have difficulties in returning their trays or cleaning their tables.

“But we will also continue to monitor and raise these concerns if a pattern is detected,” she added. /TISG

They can cheat

PAP will not dare to cheat because they want the world to think they are very fair and just. If they really wanted to, they would have already done so in Aljunied or Sengkang GRC.
