Filling hearts and tummies with warmth during Ramadan in Bedok!
We distributed porridge to residents at Bedok CC last weekend, a tradition which encapsulates the spirit of giving and compassion during this blessed month and strengthens ties within our community. My thanks to the Bedok Malay Activity Executive Committee (MAEC) and our volunteers for putting together this meaningful initiative.
We will have more porridge distribution over the coming two weekends (23, 24 and 30 Mar) at Bedok CC, at 3.45pm. Everyone is welcome!

HSK joined residents for the “We Love Our Planet” storytelling session.

Joined residents for the “We Love Our Planet” storytelling session organised by CDL Sustainability and our East Coast volunteers at Bedok Library last weekend.
Our little ones learnt fun facts about the ocean from BioGirl MJ (Just Keep Thinking), while our librarians from National Library Board, Singapore, Singapore gave them ideas on how to tell engaging stories!
Books and stories are wonderful ways to spark our children’s curiosity about the world and encourage them to care for the planet. Our libraries are treasure troves of knowledge and also run wonderful programmes and exhibitions – I encourage everyone to drop by and learn something new!

Selamat Berbuka Puasa!
Buka puasa (breaking of fast) is a time for families and friends to get together and strengthen bonds over a meal after a day of fasting. Happy to experience the warmth of this special occasion with our Muslim residents at Bedok CC!
Many thanks to East Coast GRC Malay Activity Executive Committee (MAEC) for bringing our community together. I wish all our Muslim friends a fulfilling and meaningful Ramadan!

Had a wonderful time at this year’s Ramadan Bazaar at Wisma Geylang Serai with Fahmi Aliman, Tan Kiat How and Jessica Tan Soon Neo. There are about 500 booths offering food, shopping and entertainment. Great to see many people enjoying the mouth-watering treats and traditional snacks!
In the spirit of fostering compassion and community togetherness during this holy month, the bazaar is also supporting community initiatives such as food distribution for those in need. There are also booths which are raising funds for meaningful causes.
The bazaar is open till 9 April. Do visit with your family and friends to support our stallholders and soak in the joyful atmosphere!

HSK was happy to meet Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Liu Jianchao again.

Happy to meet Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Liu Jianchao again. We last met in July 2022. We took stock of our broad and substantive bilateral cooperation, which is underpinned by strong people-to-people ties. These ties have continued to deepen, particularly since our citizens can now travel visa-free between both countries for up to 30 days.
Minister Liu and I also exchanged views on key global and regional developments. Against the backdrop of complex challenges facing our world, it is important for Singapore, China and other like-minded partners to continue working together to promote regional economic integration and uphold an open and rules-based multilateral trading system. I wish Minister Liu and his delegation a fruitful visit to Singapore!

We’re two weeks away from Hari Raya Puasa. This year, there are many bazaars that you can visit during this festive season. Aside from the well known ones at Geylang Serai and Kampong Gelam, many neighbourhoods will have their own bazaars, including in Bedok. Do visit with your friends and family to enjoy the food, lights and shopping!

Joined youths from Reformative Training Centre to distribute groceries and other household essentials to 100 families in Bedok last weekend.
Organised by Reforming Support Group (RSG CLG), an organisation dedicated to supporting ex-offenders, youths-at-risk and their families, this initiative is a purposeful way for the youths to give back to the community and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Glad to hear that the youths are doing well in their programme, with good family support and focused on preparing for their future.
My thanks to RSG for the impactful work that you do to help our ex-offenders reintegrate into society, Allkin Singapore Family Service Centre for supporting our youths and their families, and our Bedok Malay Executive Committee (MAEC) for facilitating this event.

Glad to join mosque leaders and volunteers for buka puasa (breaking of fast) at Masjid Al-Taqua last week.
This East Coast mosque has a rich history – it has been around for more than 140 years! Happy to hear that the team is working on historical documentation and building a heritage trail to preserve and share the legacy of the mosque with all. My thanks to the team for your warm hospitality, and for faithfully serving our East Coast community over the years.
I wish everyone a blessed and meaningful holy month.

HSK met Mr Red Box.

Heng Swee Keat

Meet Mr Red Box, the newest member of Youth Corps Singapore
Youth Corps turns 10 this year and is commemorating this milestone with this new mascot. It draws inspiration from Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s red box, the briefcase that he used for his daily work. Its contents ranged from speeches and papers, to notes that he would send out to agencies on issues like trees or landscaping.
Such was Mr Lee’s dedication to Singapore – he was concerned about matters big and small. Mr Red Box calls on our youth to carry forward this dedication and the spirit of service, to build a better Singapore.
Keep your eyes out for Mr Red Box and Youth Corps initiatives in the coming months!

It’s the weekend before Hari Raya!
✨

Joined our Malay Activity Executive Committee members and volunteers to distribute Hari Raya Care Packs to our Bedok residents yesterday.
This year’s Care Pack includes delicious cookies baked by our very own East Coast advisers, residents, and volunteers!
Even as Ramadan draws to a close, may we always hold onto the spirit of compassion and giving. I’m heartened to see volunteers from different races and backgrounds coming together for this meaningful initiative. A big thank you to everyone involved!

HSK is impressed with the top research facilities in Beijing.

Heng Swee Keat is in Beijing, China.

Beijing is home to some of the top research facilities in Asia. Spent a fruitful morning at Tsinghua University visiting its Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), which focuses on applying AI technologies to accelerate industry transformation and develop solutions to real-world challenges. It taps on TusPark, a leading science park located within the university to strengthen the translation of research into enterprises.
Our universities collaborate with foreign counterparts such as Tsinghua University in a wide range of programmes, from student exchanges to joint research projects. Through these, our researchers and students get to learn from one another, tap into a wider network of ideas and talent, and develop innovation solutions to shared challenges like climate change and ageing.

HSK wants to stay vigilant against online falsehoods. :cautious:

You may have seen messages circulating on WhatsApp regarding a shellfish poisoning outbreak in Bedok. These rumours are false.
The Ministry of Health, Singapore and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) have confirmed that there are no reports of any outbreak of shellfish poisoning in Singapore as of 8 April. Please do not forward or circulate the messages further, as they may cause unnecessary alarm.
Thanks to everyone who alerted me and the authorities about this matter. Let’s stay vigilant against online falsehoods.

HSK was happy to meet PRC Vice President Han Zheng again.

Heng Swee Keat is in Beijing, China.

Happy to meet PRC Vice President Han Zheng again. We last met when Vice President Han visited Singapore in November 2023.
Vice President Han is an old friend of Singapore’s, with whom I worked closely to enhance bilateral cooperation when we co-chaired the Singapore-China Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) from 2019 to 2022.
In Beijing, we had a fruitful discussion on the latest developments in China and the region. We also reviewed the excellent state of bilateral relations, and discussed how we could build on our longstanding partnership to explore new and mutually beneficial opportunities for our peoples.
