Uncle Sim's mural is now complete! Many thanks to residents in East Coast and beyond who donated your bottle caps – what a wonderful example of community rallying to support a ground-up project!
The bottle caps donations are still coming in, so Uncle Sim is already planning his next project. I look forward to seeing more of such beautiful murals around East Coast and in Singapore.

Christmas has just passed, but we are already looking forward to the Year of the Rabbit!
CNY comes early next year, on 22 January. Over the past century, CNY has never come earlier. And there were only two other occasions when CNY fell on 22 Jan – in 1947 and 2004.
Our East Coast Green Ambassadors recently conducted a workshop to teach our seniors to make decorative lanterns using red packets they brought from home. This is just one of the various fun and meaningful activities to keep our seniors engaged.
It’s also a great way to upcycle used red packets from previous years!
Thanks to our Bedok team for organising this fun activity!

HSK was happy to speak to an oldfriend.

As 2022 draws to a close, happy to speak to an old friend PRC Vice Premier Han Zheng over the phone.
We exchanged early New Year greetings and discussed the strengths of our bilateral cooperation. What has set this year apart from the previous two pandemic years was the resumption of in-person meetings. In early November, Vice Premier Han visited Singapore to co-chair the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation with me. Subsequently, PM Lee Hsien Loong had in-person meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang on the side lines of multilateral meetings.
Despite the ebb and flow of the pandemic, our bilateral relations have grown from strength to strength. We made progress in both existing and new areas of cooperation and announced a bumper number of deliverables at JCBC last month.
Today, countries around the world are in different phases of exiting the shadows of COVID-19. But only by working together can countries achieve a more resilient post-pandemic global recovery. As we end the year, I wish everyone a more peaceful, prosperous and healthy 2023.

It’s a wrap! As we end the year, I will remember 2022 as the year of normalcy. Normalcy that we have taken for granted until COVID struck. Glad that many in-person events, meetings and exchanges have resumed. I am grateful that Singapore has come through the pandemic stronger and more united than before. We will soon welcome 2023. I wish you all good health, happiness, and may everyone achieve their goals for the coming year!

HSK wishes everyone Happy New Year!

HSK found out this morning that Sim Wong Hoo has passed away. :frown:

Heng Swee Keat

Sim Wong Hoo was the founder of Creative Technology, Singapore’s first global tech start-up.
In the 1990s, he delighted PC users of my generation when the Sound Blaster card brought computers to life, away from the monotonous beeps that we were used to. He showed gumption when he launched the NOMAD series of portable audio players, which competed directly against the iPod and digital Walkman. His persistence in R&D brought 3D sound to headphones in the form of Super X-Fi.
Sim Wong Hoo made it in an era when Singapore was not known for innovation or entrepreneurship. He dedicated his life to pushing new frontiers and developing innovative products. His success served as inspiration for Singapore start-ups that followed.
I enjoy classical music and Sim Wong Hoo’s inventions accompanied my journey of enjoyment over the years, including the Super X-Fi headphones in my room. I last met him prior to the pandemic when we discussed his then recently launched headphones and his expansion plans.
I found out this morning of his sudden passing. May he rest in peace.

Automated refuse chute cleaning
These are just some of the R&D projects and innovations that the Housing & Development Board is exploring, in collaboration with its many partners.
I got to see some of these pilots first hand when I visited HDB’s Centre of Building Research (CBR) yesterday.
With 80% of our population living in public housing, HDB is our island’s largest property developer and estate manager. As our population and infrastructure ages, it’s important that people and buildings age gracefully, and we need to be innovative about doing so.
A big thank you to the HDB team for hosting me, and for joining me in engaging East Coast grassroots leaders on housing policies and programmes yesterday!

3D concrete printing of a public shelter in action! 3D concrete printing can also be used for architectural elements, prefabrication of bathroom units and pedestrian bridges. It’s faster, reduces wastage and enables complex components to be printed.

What looks like a white box in this photo is actually dry ice blasting inside a mock-up of a refuse chute!

Our refuse chutes currently undergo periodic maintenance and cleaning through pressure cleaning and fumigation, but local SME AmpTec Industrial Innovation Pte Ltd is developing a crawler robot with dry ice blasting capability to clean, inspect and repair internal surfaces of refuse chutes, to make the maintenance process more efficient.

This robot helps to transport materials at construction sites. Workers can typically carry about 150 kg of load per trip using wheel-barrows, while this robot can easily carry 300 kg!

The Year of the Rabbit is a hop away.
To add to the festive cheer, was at the Blk 16 and Blk 58 wet market and hawker centre on Saturday morning to distribute mandarin oranges and red packets to residents and stallholders.
Many stallholders also shared the good response from the latest tranche of CDC Vouchers. If you have yet to redeem the latest tranche that was released on 3 January, do remember to do so and support our hawkers and heartland merchants! (go.gov.sg/cdcv)
