Earthquake rocks Thailand / Myanmar

They upgraded the earthquake from 7.7 to 8.2. But the Thai media is quite on the scale of the earthquake in Bangkok. It cannot be 7.7. At 7.7 in Bangkok, more buildings would have collapsed.

The Building Construction Authority in Thailand must inform the public the minimum standard in Thai construction that BCA exacts from developers.

I suspect the earthquake in Bangkok is no more than 5.0 and whether the building that collapsed met the minimum standard.

Thailand has an Earthquake Resistant Building Code passed in 2007.

The one shown collapsing is a half built building that has not been fully stabilised . Were there any fully operational building that collapsed? Don't have right?

Tiong dirty money, Tiong tofu dreg construction project and a bribed and compromised Thai government.

What can possibly go wrong?

Last time new world hotel collapse,Civil defence save the boss of hotel under the rubble with his mistress inside with him. This news rock the whole of singapore.

What is the difference between half built and fully built. It's already 30 to 40 storey high, what else can they do when it's fully built? The structural construction is already complete.

Yes, so they want to inflate the seismic scale beyond the statutory requirements to avoid blame and compensation.

I'm not an architect nor had any experience with building construction.
I do agree with your points.
However I'm not very sure will the uncovered and unfilled top and sides will do any difference with a stress test. As there will be weight differences and when architect leesign a building they have to compute all these to come out with a safe operational building.

A powerful earthquake which struck Myanmar on Friday afternoon resulted in 10 deaths, 16 injuries and 101 missing at three construction sites in Bangkok, including the collapse of a 30-storey government building, according to Bangkok Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej.

The 7.7-magnitude quake, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometres at 1.20pm in Mandalay, Myanmar, was felt across Thailand, China and Vietnam.

In Thailand, the quake had caused damage in Bangkok and 10 other provinces, including Samut Sakhon, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Chai Nat, Lamphun, Loei and Kamphaeng Phet, said Pasakorn Boonyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Quakes in Mae Hong Son

The Meteorological Department reported on Saturday that two additional earthquakes were detected in the northern province of Mae Hong Son.

The first, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale at a depth of five kilometres, occurred in Pai district at 11.21pm, followed by a magnitude 2.0 quake at 3.24am, also in Pai.

More aftershocks expected

Aftershocks from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake which hit Myanmar on Friday will continue in Thailand for one to two weeks, according to a seismologist.

Although the aftershocks are expected to be less intense than the initial tremor, people are advised to exercise caution, said Prof Dr Pennung Warnitchai, a renowned expert on structural engineering from the Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) and director of the National Earthquake Research Centre of Thailand.

He also stressed on the need for structural assessments of tall buildings in the wake of the powerful earthquake.

"It's important to make sure that these structures are safe for occupancy and free from damage," Prof Dr Pennung. "If any damage is detected, those buildings must not be used."

The seismologist said that the recent earthquake originated along the Sagaing Fault in Myanmar, which lies between the Indian and Sunda plates. The quake fell within the safety standards for tall buildings designed to withstand seismic activity, he added.

"While risk remains, scientific data suggests that aftershocks will diminish over time."

If anything, additional items on the top will only compromise the structural integrity of the building. The exterior tiles are already in place; the only remaining items are the interior renovations.

The structural integrity of the construction is decided by the foundation that supports the entire building. It's a 32-storey building meant to be the new Auditor-General Office. In a way, the Thais are lucky that the building collapsed now rather than later when it's occupied with tenants and office workers.

That is supposed to be a future Government Building. Having totally collapsed now, that is why I'm saying that PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra may be a bad omen.

I think the brick walls are not fully constructed yet. Mostly the steel structures were to be seen. Without brick wall reinforcements, the steel structures will sway and crumple at the slightest ground movement.
