bro, what a coincidence. For the past few months, I have been thinking of getting a dog. I have never been without a pet dog since I was a teenager (that was a long time ago). My last dog passed away from old age six years ago. I would love to just get another dog, but the heartache of seeing them grow old and sick still prevents me from doing so. Don't know if I can go through it again and again. At the same time, I tell myself I need a dog, and that the heartache would be worth it because of the love and loyalty the dog would give you through his/her life.

I have always only wanted pedigrees, but now I am also open to adopting a mixed breed perhaps. Here are the few adoption sites FYI.

name itself suggests it is an expensive breed.

read somewhere that if these dogs arent exercised well, they will destroy all things below knee level in your house.

For those who've never owned a dog, think carefully before you get one. It's all about commitment.

Exercise is not the main factor. Dogs that destroy the house when their owner is away are suffering from separation anxiety. Nothing to do with breed or size of dog. It's simply a reflection of the dog's personality.

Having more then one dog can help as the dogs have each other for company when the owner is out of the house.

Isn't GD already a dog, a stray dog. Why the need to get a dog?

Surely these sorts of comments are wearing a bit thin. If you have nothing to contribute surely it is better to occupy yourself with threads where you can contribute positively eg the Thailand thread.

Depends. A lot of working dogs, especially herding breeds, require lots of exercise, ranging from an hour to 2 hours daily of walking. Excess energy if not expended may be channelled into destructive behaviour – chewing up stuff, excessive barking, obsessive-compulsive behaviour. This happens even if the owner is at home.

If destructive behaviour happens only in owner's absence, yes, most likely separation anxiety.

Agree. Also helps with socializing skills, a problem with many abandoned dogs.

I'm not going on a witch hunt to the source of the issue eons ago.

Both of you are behaving like kindergarten kids.

I ignore all my detractors and I've never ended up in a slugging match in every single thread I participate in.

In the old days had a few mongrels. The dog was probably abandoned & the dog wandered into the family garden. Actually started with just one but it eventually reproduced.

In those days I had a yard & the dogs would sometimes get out to roam about & you will get into problems with dog catchers & unexpected puppies:) So if you decide to get one you will have to consider getting it spayed & making sure it doesn't go wandering.

If you don't have a car in Spore it's going to be a problem because you can't take them on the buses or taxis. Can consider getting a cat which is low maintenance. You don't need to take them for walks just have to clean their cat litter & feed them.

Volunteering at the shelter is a great idea. Good test bad and the amount of commitment needed can be sensed.

bro, real dogs preferred. after reading some of the posts here, maybe i will go volunteer at one of these shelters first. what i have is lots of time. of course when i start volunteering, i wont have that much time to deal with the doggies in this forum.

Many of the interesting dog breeds are banned or have some crazy restrictions in singoland.

No german shepherd, rottweiler, english mastiff, dogie de bordeaux….wtf …. if you want to get them they have to be muzzled 100% of the time when you take them out and you have to post some kind of bond to the tune of 100,000$ in case the dog mauls someone.

These breeds do not maul someone just for the fuck of it…its either due to specific training or very poor, non existent training.
