Do you consider this a warship?

In open sea, dingy will capsize..

Scoopdreams.. warship is the term used for a specific class of military vessel. our Navy ships are called gunboats or patrol craft in Navy standard. US coast guard's ship is bigger than ours.

Depending on which US Coast Guard assets you're referring to...

The US Coast Guard has a fleet of vessels with the capabilities of a blue water Navy. I don't think RSN is blue water capable. Resupplying is gonna be a headache.

To be fair, the SAF has never participated directly in any confrontations and has typically adopted a humanitarian or support approach.

so how can you call it a warship if they are not conducting war ops?

instead they should say support ship...to other naval warships..

It might be added that even on 'real' warships, i.e. MGBs, MFs, destroyers, etc. (esp those in the West) do not often bristle with guns and missiles anymore. They are typically hidden until they are needed. The Soviets on the other hand displayed their often rather ineffective weaponry on their ships' decks.

That's a Landing Ships Tank (LST) typically used by Navies around the world to support amphibious operations. They usually carry troops along with the required vehicles and cargo directly onto shores.

RSN' LST is locally built with a flight deck and a well dock and is armed with 76 mm Oto Melara and Mistral SAM. These are support or supply vessels and not designed for direct confrontations.

To be fair, the SAF has never participated directly in any confrontations and has typically adopted a humanitarian or support approach.

<style></style>Mmmm,you got a point.Perhaps our navy will intervene purely on humanitarian basis.Like providing safe passage to Somalian Pirates landing them in their land after their successful hostage ransom received. Why than a landing craft?

You see,it may be good idea for Somalian to keep their ransom money safe in sinkie. Why not?Are pirates any worse than Burmese drug lords !

They can say anything they want...

They can even call it an air craft carrier since it has a flight deck, but an LST is what that vessel is.

Not true, there's only a couple of places on a vessel's weather deck you can place weapons like guns and missiles.

Most Navies are they're moving towards using guided missiles instead of large 8" or 12" guns.

The US is using Ticonderoga class guided missile cruisers while the Russians Kirov, Salva and Kara class missile cruisers. If you look at the later day cruisers, you'll note the absence of large guns.

That's a good one... :-)

But I guess this is the only neutral vessel we have, thus sending them would help maintain our non-aggressive stance.

One question!

Can the SGP "warship" radar detect rubber dingy boats used by the somali?

Can they do another USS Cole attack on it?

The profile of RIBs are too small for most radars to detect.

Yes, it is possible that a RIB with determined individuals could pull a USS Cole on our LST. Not easy, as the LST should be based in open seas far from shore making it hard for a RIB packed with explosive to reach, but not impossible.

<style></style>Non aggressive to pirates? !!!!..

Perhaps sinkie should build a floating casino for the pirates R & R. as a sign of non aggression...I am sure that would be much appreciated instead...by the pirates of course.Money easy come easy go.

It's a tricky issue...

The RSN's mission there is not to hunt pirates but act as a deterrent force to provide merchant ships with a safer voyage.

If RSN were to arrest pirates, they will be saddled with the task of putting these pirates to trial in SG, jail them at Changi and repatriate them at the end of their sentence courtesy of SG tax payers.

Killing them in the presence of so many other Naval and merchant vessels will cast them in bad light and is is against the second and third Geneva convention.

<style></style>I would rather send a ship with huge guns poking all over. However antiquated. The mere sight would scare the shit out of any pirates.Confrontation are usually won at a psychological level without firing single shot. The message is don't mess with me or.....

A US Navy Iowa class battleship such as the USS Missouri with it's 9 16" guns on 3 turrets would be useless against a bunch of pirates on RIBs.

I think the pirates will call your bluff pretty quick. These are pretty experienced and determined individuals.

<style></style>Unless you were a pirate commanding a war ship before.

How do you figure any pirate would get any nearer to a warship in the first place?

Piracy in not a new phenomena.Suggest you read how piracy was done with in the years of yore .Force.Brute force.

How do you propose to deter hardcore pirates with a ship that resembles a barge?

I'm not a naval expert.

But looking at the armament on our RSN's vessels, I'll say none of they are suitable for such missions.

If I had to choose, I'll say the MGBs with the Bofors 57mm guns are better then the Oto Melara 76 mm Super Rapide on current day RSN vessels. Besides, the former has almost double the firing rate and 1.5x the amount of rounds in a magazine.

It's smaller and has similar top speed with the fastest current day RSN vessels and should be cheaper to operate. Only down side is it's range, it'll need an LST to refuel it in high seas.

12 October 2000, a small craft approached the port side of the destroyer, and an explosion occurred, putting a 40-by-60-foot gash in the ship's port side of USS Cole killing 17 American sailors.

Pirates are humans and are driven by their needs for survival, stick them against a wall and like Netwon's 3rd law, for every action, there is an equal opposite reaction.

<style></style>Wrong analogy friend.Terrorists and pirates are different breed.Terrorist are motivated by ideals.Pirates are motivated by loot. One sacrifices his life for his ideal. The pirate sacrifices others life so could enjoy his life.
