Sam keeps saying that SG is well run based on his experiences in NZ and aus...that's subjective reason which I dont subscribe..
My contention that PAP doesnt govern SG well is based on life in SG..
1. growing income inequality
2. neglect of the poor, aged and sick
3. low wage/high cost of living disequilibrium
4. chase of materialism
5. growing social divide
6. high stress levels of young singaporeans
7. the poor purchasing parity
8. high cost of housing
9. road congestion
10. poor quality of life
etc...
to be fair, Sam is right to say it is better compared to what he has seen.
You must have seen / experience black, grey and the shades between to know white. Otherwise, you will think grey = white without seeing grey.
There ought to be some benchmarking. Else, you would think zero is the lowest.
Not that I say PAP is running the country very well. On the contrary it has do with their sterling performance in the past coupled with the fact that they always tell us, that they are best, they have the best people running the show and THEREFORE ought to be paid the highest on this planet (probably this galaxy) makes our witch hunting instincts heighten.
The more you ask, you more you are expected to return. So, a breakdown in MRT is a big issue here whereas in France or in London, its part of routine daily life.
For sure, PAP has made several policy errors along the way, some irreversible, some reversible and some, they are trying to unravel the mess created.
However, PAP is stuck and too deeply ingrained with the old-school way of doing things that it is difficult to change. So, for a moment, they tried to old-handed method, the father telling child method, the voters told them otherwise. Then they tried to engage the voters, a little bit, still retaining the ok, i hear you attitude, but i decide in the end. This election tells them, it is not working as well.
Now, after the elections, for a moment, they changed quickly. LHL cutting short his leave to handle the MRT affair is one. You don't see that during LKY's time. But they still have shades of the old school style surfacing from time to time...like LKY telling Hougang to repent, the warning against slower economy growth with heavier restriction immigration....
Now, i agree with you that SAF ought to pay market rates for NS recruits...but then, it still won't solve the problem. The general consensus against NS is not because of pay. It is because of the idea of Singaporeans sacrificing their youth to protect a bunch of potentially ungrateful PRs / FTs that have the option & luxury of taking a hike out in times of troubles.
