Baccarat Gambler’s Fallacy

Gambler’s Fallacy

Gambler’s fallacy is deemed to be the root cause of many gambling problems. Why are there hardcore gamblers? Don’t they know that gambling recklessly can cause serious problems in their lives? In this article, we are going to understand gambler’s fallacy inside out.

Gambler’s fallacy in short

Can that steel ball land in ‘Zero’ again for the next round on a roulette table? You are thinking about the likelihood of a particular event to happen again. If you think that it is very unlikely, then you have fallen into the trap of Gambler’s fallacy. That little steel ball does not know that itself has landed on the greenie patch Zero the previous round. It didn’t have a brain to memorize how many places it has landed. In fact, every round of roulette is an independent event and the probability applies to each individual round. By believing that the previous result have an effect to the future result in gambling, that is gambler’s fallacy.

Historical moments

On 18th August 1931, an occurrence on a roulette table in the famous Monte Carlo Casino. The ball fell on black 26 times in a row. Gamblers lost millions of francs betting against black. They believe that the next round cannot be landing on a black again and it must follow by a streak of reds. This is a classical example of Gambler’s fallacy.

Understanding the difference

When we talk about statistics, we are referring to a collection of data on a string of events. It is nature at work here. After thousands and thousands of hands dealt on a baccarat table, the result of Player and Banker wins will eventually neutral out as almost even. Understanding the statistics and applying house edge is how the casino guaranteed its profit.

Probabilities are what matters when you place your next bet on the table. When there are much more Banker wins in a particular shoe, the probability of having a Player win in the next hand is still 44.6247%. It will not increase 0.0001% just because Banker has more wins.

If that is the case, how did the Player wins catches up in term of statistics? Just like the above example, there will be a Player dominant shoe that has more Player wins and the probabilities of next hand for a Banker win in that shoe will still be 45.8597%. Just in case you asked, what happen to the 9.5156%? It is the Tie (draw game).

Reverse and inverse gambler’s fallacy

The above are all examples of people thinking that an event could not occurred too frequent. If they put that into action, we term them often as “Dragon Slayer”. We can always spot these people in Marina Bay Sands casino or Resort World Sentosa casino. Occasionally there will be crowded baccarat table that dealt out a streaky shoe. Most of the people will be betting on repeat in hope the streak will continue. Some will bet the opposite committing gambler’s fallacy illusion.

Luckily the majority is betting on repeat and believes that similar events can indeed occur frequently. No, they are committing Reverse gambler’s fallacy. We also call these people “Trenders”. They believe that a series of events will have a higher likelihood to duplicate and again thinks that past events has an effect on future events.

Inverse gambler’s fallacy is very similar to the other two counterparts. It is a term coined by philosopher Ian Hacking. It describe that people has an illusion if they observed some event which they think is unusual. Let’s take an example of roulette table again. It is the start of the day for this particular dealer. He toss out his first spin on the wheel and Tom happened to came in and witness this event for this very moment. The ball landed on Zero. Tom will assume that this dealer has spin the wheel couple of times prior to Tom’s arrival. It is as good as telling people that every once a dealer changed, the first spin will NOT be a Zero. Actually taking all the numbers into account, each and every number has the equal chance to be landed on the first spin. Ask any roulette dealer, I believe all have encountered spinning a Zero on their shift’s first round.

More examples

Everybody believes that they cannot lose forever. This is true at some point. What people don’t understand is that whether can you lose forever depend on how much bankroll you have. Let’s make it very simple for readers understanding. You have $1000 and betting $100 per bet. Your target is ridiculously only 1 win in 10 hands. And let’s say you already had 3 loses in a row. Now you have 7 chances to hit your target. Initially you have more chances to win 1 hand and now you are down to 7 more tries which is lesser than before. Your how many times lose in a row did not increase the chances of winning the next hand at all. Nobody tells you that you cannot lose 10 hands in a row. So, by saying that you cannot lose forever only applies when you have indefinite bankroll.

The other thing I need to mention is, the more a person believes that he/she cannot lose forever is in the danger zone. They will tend to increase bet when they are caught in a losing streak. Every time they increased the bet size, they are thinking that they have lost enough times and this hand will turn out a win. It is purely gambler’s fallacy.

Mindset of gambler’s fallacy

The problem in gambler’s fallacy rooted deep into many gamblers. It is a cognitive bias based problem. They accepted the law of statistic but failed to understand the mechanism and reasoning behind it. They particularly assume that statistic applies to small data collections. By encountering a series of losses, they assumed that a series of wins are about to happen just to level out in terms of statistics.

A clearer example, there are 2 roulette tables side by side. One table is producing continuous Blacks result and the other table is producing Reds result. A gambler with gambler’s fallacy problem will assume the followings,

This table continuous Blacks result has been even out in the other table
This table continuous Blacks result has to accompanied with a series Reds bias wins
Both table has chosen its bias and will produce more bias in future result
All these reasoning are based on gambler’s fallacy but they will recognize it as statistic law. They are just witnessing random results. Nothing this table produced has anything to do with what happen to the table beside it. These events are not a result of past events. The series of blacks that had been spinning out are not results of a streak of reds spins out in the past event. Likewise for this streak of blacks will not have an effect on the future results. Misinterpreting the theory of statistics and wrong understanding on randomness created the mindset of gambler’s fallacy.

What is not gambler’s fallacy in gambling?

Not all cases of thinking are based on gambler’s fallacy. When we say the next hand dealt on the baccarat table has a higher chances to be Banker or Player THAN a Tie result. The next spin result of a roulette table has lesser chance to be Green THAN Red or Black. You are right. When people say that Tie bet in Baccarat and betting on Zero in roulette are suckers bet. They are correct in term of probabilities against payout after house edge implies.

If we draw out an Ace from a deck of 52 cards and not putting it back into the original deck. It is not a gambler’s fallacy to assume that there is a lesser probability to draw an Ace from the same deck again.

I’m always amused by the idea of card counting on blackjack with a continuous shuffling machine. Don’t people understand that the cards are place into the machine to shuffle again and cards counting are stupid? It only works when the drawn cards are burned and not inserted back to the deck. There is this person I met and he reasoned that the cards that have been inserted back to the deck pose a low probability to show again. He is not doomed but I just don’t find the time justifiable to debate this issue with him. Back then I didn’t have that thought of educating people and I myself was busy making my dream work. (Of course I didn’t make it… LOL)

Cure for gambler’s fallacy

As we understand that gambler’s fallacies are a deeply rooted cognitive problem, to eliminate this mindset is almost impossible. The only way is to continuously educating people to treat each event as if it is a beginning and not a continuation of previous events.

The easiest way is to explain this to them is to tell them to assume and imagine that they had already witness 3 tails in a row without tossing the coin. Now toss a coin and hide the result and ask them what chances it will be a head in term of percentage. Most probably they will answer 50%. Now start with bringing out a coin and toss it 3 times with a result of heads. Now ask that person what is the prediction for next outcome in term of percentage. If they say it is 75%, than they are calculating based on 4 results calculations. Tell him/her that it is still 50%. If they could not accept the reasoning, ask them the previous question again by asking them to assume 3 tails had been tossed. Some people will get it but some will tell you that the coin hadn’t been toss. The latter is having troubles to understand the facts.

The sad part is that many people have already recognized this theory but chose to ignore it. Let’s say you are betting using Martingale method $100-$200-$400-$800. You have already loss 3 hands in a row suffering $700. Now you are down to your last bet to determine your fate, a bet size of $800. Your heart is racing; this will determine your survival or losing all your money $1500. Actually a corner of your mind already recognized that the next outcome to win or lose is 50-50. Regardless of the result, the recognition has been forgotten. You win that bet, you fall deeper into gambler’s fallacy. You loss that bet, you feel that the statistic is imbalance and you are simply bad luck to be there at the wrong time. In the nick of time just before the cards are dealt, you clearly understand that whether you win or lose that bet are 50-50. Why chose to ignore it after the cards are dealt?

Reason to write this article

I have personally witnessed gambler’s fallacy in practice on field. I also fully understand the dullness of flat betting without prioritizing which bet should be increase in size. The excitement of squeezing that particular hand of cards is different from others. It just the idea of thinking that this hand has a higher chance of winning is a disease. People need to understand that playing a game that has a house edge is impossible to overcome in the long run.

People need to understand that they are gambling as a form of entertainment and they should play only what they could afford to lose.

Why Baccarat is popular?

vlcsnap-2012-08-04-18h29m54s166.jpg

James Bond is also a fan of Baccarat… But we only saw his winning sessions.

The main reason is the simplicity of the game. I remember asking a question jokingly to a dealer in Marina Bay Sands 3 years ago. I said, “Please tell me what is the next outcome”, and he said, “It’s gonna be Banker or Player and sometimes, a Tie”. That’s it! It is so simple. We do not have 36 numbers to guess like the roulette, triple dices odds of 1 is to 30 to consider or whether to stand or draw in blackjack. There are only 3 outcomes in baccarat. If looking at the odds of payout 1-1, there are only 2 choices.

How about 3 Kings? It wasn’t as popular just because it didn’t have to draw cards. Lack the extra excitement. There are also many factors that contributed to the popularity of Baccarat in casinos. James Bond was one of it. Decades ago, James Bond is already playing Baccarat as his favorite game accompanied by sexy ladies. A person also feels that they can’t go very wrong in guessing a game with a result like flipping a coin. I mean, how difficult can it be?

The excitement is also a driving force in Baccarat. I’m quite sure that you encountered betting on Banker, Player has high points after a card drawn let’s say a total of 8. The Banker has only 1 card to win and 1 card to Tie. You have 7.7% chances to Tie or another 7.7% chance to win, making it a total of near 85% chance to lose your wagered bet. Guess what? You won that bet! That fateful card came in the right time to save the day. You felt that God of Luck is standing right beside you. That adrenaline rush embossed a mark in your mind. You will remember that event for a while. Many people didn’t realize that you will naturally win that hand if you encounter these event 12 times. People don’t remember losing the 11 bets but by just winning that 1 hand, they think that luck is on their side and they should “catch the tide”. Sad…

Baccarat was invented in Italy around 15th century. It literally means “Zero” in both Italian and French. The game was also officially accepted in Vegas during the 1950’s. It was said that Baccarat was played by the noble hundreds of years ago.

Today, it continues to charm people around the world. People that anti gamblers says it spreads like AIDS. I don’t agree. People just need to understand that it is a game of leisure. You are just merely paying an entertainment of what you can afford.

The stop bet strategy

Baccarat losses in a row

Everyone experienced losing a few hands in a row. Believe it or not, I personally witness 18 hands losses in a row. It just don’t happen so often. That guy must be in the worst luck of his life. I don’t think so. By playing long enough, everyone will eventually meet this nemesis. It is the betting size and progressive betting that will land us in deep trouble. If you are a regular player, you will agree with me that 6-7 loss in a row is quite common. We will have continuous streaks, singles or double to profit in 6-7 wins in a row. We also have encountered betting on either side and lose for 6-7 times in a row.

Avoiding continuous loss

So the method is clear cut straight forward. Stop betting if you have 3 losses in a row. Do virtual bets in your head and resume betting after there is a win. Of course you absorbed an unnecessary loss every time the fourth bet turn out to be a win but you have avoided the lengthy 4 or more losses. This sounds like a good method! Not really because you keep missing the first win after 3 or more losses. There is no prefect system and this stop bet method is good for clumps of wins and losses to profit.

X X X O X X X O X X X

The above win/loss sample you have loss 9 instead of 7 because you didn’t win on the both ‘O’.

X X X X X X O O X X O O O O X X X X X X O O O O

This example show 14 losses and 10 wins but using stop bet method the result is 0 loss. This is what I mean by clumps of win and loss then this method is useful.

Risk it all (The story of Ashley Revell)

Ashley-Revel.jpg

The thought of gambling on all that you have on a roulette can be a scary thing. A lot of gamblers have considered it, just not many could do it to wagered everything on a turn of the wheel. A truly crazy Englishman did just that, Ashley Revell is the name broadcast around the world, and his story will be part of history in Las Vegas Casino.

Ashley Revell was an ordinary middle age man living in London. He had enjoyed poker and betting on roulette. Eventually he and a friend came up with an idea of “all or nothing”. In 2004, they decided to hire a film crew and record not only the event but the whole process of it. The idea was if the bet is a loss, they could at least sell the video to interested parties like news media, etc.

Revell, used a few weeks to sell off all of his possessions exchanging it to cash. He auctioned off his home furnishings. He sold his house, auctioned off his furniture and he also sold all of his remaining clothes on the boot of his car. He sold his car and even his name changing it to Ashley “Blue Square” Revell. The U.K. online bookmaker Blue Square funded his betting under this condition.

Altogether, Revell was funded £80,000 for his “all or nothing” fame. He went to Las Vegas with nothing but the cash in his pocket . His friends, families members and a news crew from Sky Channel to filmed and witness this special event.

On April 11, 2004, Revell approached the Plaza’s roulette table wearing a rented tuxedo. He traded in all of his cash for chips and feeling excited about the event. In the meantime, Sky viewers were invited to submit their recommendations on how the big bet should be placed—Red or Black?

The moment the show arrives, the all or nothing choice to be set and Revell was looking at wagering all that on Black, however at the surprisingly nick of time he changed his thinking, inclined by the greater number of Sky viewers who desired Red. Instantly, he moved his two vast mountains of chips, worth $135,300, on to the terrain indicated Red.

“It all happened so quickly,” said Revell later on. “It was spinning before I knew it.” In front the eyes of many people nearby the table and millions watching at television, the ball jumped and brattled above the positioned numbers, ultimately coming to seat at the one designated “7” … Red … a winner.

The Plaza Casino dealer gathered Revell’s chips– an awesome $270,600. Revell thanked the roulette crew $600 and expressed a great sigh of relief as he cashed in. When the resort managers unlocked honorary bottles of champagne, Revell’s father mentioned to Reuters News, “I’m still against it. He shouldn’t have done it.”.

Revell endorsed the roulette table in order that it may eventually be placed on exhibit in the hotel lobby. Once inquired if he had thought of increasing and wagering again, the winner reacted, “”No, that’s it for me. I don’t want to ride my luck.”.

Oh, like that might as well wait another ferry where there is no need to pay..... :D

Personally I don't see anything wrong of being a gambler fallacy.

My fav game of roulette required more observation and skill than fallacy.

Although every spin is an independent game, but the way the croupier throw the ball, the strength, the speed, the point of throwing can actually determine the sector where the ball will land.

The gambler mood, mental, guts also play a big part.

I don't see there will be anymore fun if we don't fallacy on the next guess.

Baccarat Hall Of Fame™

Akio Kashiwagi

He was not a gambling expert and he did not write any bestselling books about baccarat card game. He did not create any gambling strategies which would help to beat baccarat and he did not teach anyone to play casino games properly…. But he is among the best baccarat gurus today! Who was Akio Kashiwagi and how had he deserved the right to be called one of the best baccarat players?

Well, he just liked baccarat very much and played it everywhere he could; he was a high roller, and his baccarat bets confused all casino employees and gamblers.

Who is Akio Kashiwagi?

Today the whole gambling world knows Akio Kashiwagi as a baccarat gambler who was ready to spend millions at baccarat tables and never left casinos without winning big money. Casino employees called him "Warrior" because he was not afraid of betting $100 000 or $200 000 per one hand and played baccarat for hours in order to win more. He was a quite reckless guy if played the game of luck in such a crazy way!

Akio Kashiwagi was a very rich Tokyo property developer who had some 'business' with the Yakuza: nobody knew for sure where he got all his money; in 1992 he was found dead at his house, and the cause of his death was 150 wounds made by a sword. Akio owed $9 million to casinos at the moment of his death.

The year of 1990

It was the fatal year for Mr. Kashiwagi when he had got his biggest baccarat winning and loss at the same time.

February 1990: Akio Kashiwagi comes to the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino (Atlantic City) and makes a bet of $200 000 at baccarat table. He was lucky to win $6 million per one night!

May 1990: Akio Kashiwagi becomes the owner of the biggest loss at baccarat history! It happens at the same casino (Trump Plaza) and the same baccarat table: Akio loses $10 million and he is not able to pay his whole debt at once.

Is he a guru?

Does Akio Kashiwagi deserve the right to be called a baccarat guru? Even after his death in 1992 he still owed $9 million to the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino ($5 million) and Las Vegas Hilton ($4 million); he always tried to negotiate all his debts, and it was quite difficult for casinos to force him paying all these debts out…

But! He was the most known high roller of baccarat; he was ready to spend up to 80 hours at baccarat tables because he really admired this game and believed it could bring him a lot of money for a short period of time. Baccarat was his game of choice and he never even tried to play any other casino game! Such devotion deserves respect, does it not?

Different sources describe Tony Renzoni as a hotel executive or a gangster. Today, he is known as The Father of American Baccarat. He started playing Baccarat in Cuba during the 1950s. He then convinced The Sands Casino in Las Vegas to open Baccarat Tables.

Baccarat at The Sands Casino was so successful, that other Las Vegas Casinos soon followed. Because of its exclusive, elite image, Baccarat never became a main stream game. Recently Baccarat has been gaining in popularity.

Tony Renzoni went on to write impoertant Baccarat Books like Renzoni on Baccarat and Baccarat Everything You Want to Know About Playing & Winning. These are must read Baccarat books.

Frank Scoblette

It is hardly possible to imagine the gambling world without such a guru as Frank Scoblete. He is not only the bestselling American author of more than 20 books about gambling, but he also the gambling expert. Frank believes that gambling is fun and he considers it being his lifestyle. This outstanding person can not imagine his life without casinos today though it was not always so. The way of Frank Scoblete was very long before he understood what his real passion was.

Anyway, Mr. Scoblete considers winning being even more fun than gambling itself; so, gambling is not only hobby and interesting pastime for him but also a good business which brings much money.

Frank Scoblete usually writes his book under the name King of Scobe. He is an expert of almost all casino games though his favorite ones were always craps and blackjack; he did not only describe and analyze them but also found new methods and techniques to win these games. Mr. Scoblete does not forget about baccarat card game too: his Baccarat Battle Book became an American bestseller and was called to be one of the best guides for everyone who wanted to understand baccarat game perfectly.

The biographyof Frank Scoblete is full of interesting facts and events: he had to change many professions before coming to the world of gambling; but his achievements are beyond any doubts today. Today he gives different seminars on the topic of craps and blackjack, organizes various gambling events, continues writing books and articles to different newspapers, gambling magazines and Internet websites; moreover, he can boast with audio- and videotapes.

Mr. Scoblete lives in New York with his wife Alene Paone, the owner of Paone Press (the publishing house where Frank usually printed his books).

Henry Temburin

He started his gambling career with a revenge to blackjack and soon became one of the world famous gambling experts. Henry Tamburin never considered himself to be the guru of gambling though the books and articles written by him told us the opposite thing. We call his name among Baccarat Experts because he was the developer of some winning baccarat strategies and described them in his bestselling book, the good guide for all baccarat players.

The beginning

Henry Tamburin studied at the University of Maryland and got the PhD in Chemistry. He never thought about the gambling career and did not plan to gamble at all; but everything had changed in 1968 when Henry and his young wife came to Las Vegas.

They went there together with another married couple of their friends on their invitation, and Henry tried the game of blackjack there. It happened in the hotel when Henry's waited for his wife: he noticed blackjack tables there and decided to kill some time playing it. He knew that blackjack was possible to beat, so did not worry much about that. As a result, he lost almost all his money and had almost nothing for his further rest in Las Vegas. Henry Tamburin promised himself to examine and play the game perfectly to be able to beat blackjack at last!

Having advanced mathematical skills, it was not very difficult for Henry to understand and even improve blackjack strategies and become a good master of this game. He did not stop with blackjack and examined other casino games too. All these deeds helped Mr. Tamburin become a skilled gambling expert and write many books on this topic: the development of baccarat strategies is among his achievements too.

Today

Today Henry Tamburin is possible to see on TV and hear on radio; he is the author of many gambling books about blackjack, baccarat, craps and casinos in general. He writes articles for many gambling newspapers and magazines and teaches people how to play blackjack: his courses are for gamblers of different knowledge - beginners, intermediate, advanced.

Henry lives in Vegas now and plays different casino games there; he has become interested in video poker lately, and he runs his personal website about gambling.

Henry Tamburin never considered himself being the blackjack expert. Blackjack was just like a hobby for him, and he had been working at one international chemical company for 30 years. Thanks to gambling, the name of Henry Tamburin will be always remembered.

James Bond

This baccarat expert is not real but he is the most popular and world famous baccarat player in the history of this game. James Bond, the well-known movie character and the image of Ian Fleming who has given a birth to the fabulous Agent 007 is more and more often described as a passionate baccarat player and a real expert of this casino game.

If you watched all James Bond pictures attentively you should have noticed the fact he liked playing at casinos very much. Many movies described James Bond as an admirer of poker (Texas Hold'em in particular) but his real game of passion was baccarat.

Biography

James Bond's life, birth, parents, education, work, habits, likes and dislikes, relations with women etc. are described in Ian Fleming's books and screened by films directors and producers.

So, nothing will be hidden from real fans of Agent 007: his role had been played by many Hollywood actors but the most noticeable and memorable "James Bond" was Sean Connery. The image of this character is associated mostly with this actor today.

James Bond is the secret agent of the British Secret Intelligence Service known as MI6 in all movies. His secret name is Agent 007 and it had become a common noun already: all spies and reticent people are called to be "James Bond" or "agent 007" today.

Movies

James Bond and the way he plays baccarat are possible to observe in movies (though you are welcome to read about him in Ian Fleming's books of course). The most popular film about James Bond which shows him as a baccarat player is Casino Royale (1967): the whole plot is devoted to this casino game actually.

James Bond, as a baccarat expert and admirer, is also possible to meet in such movies as:
•Dr. No
•Thunderball
•Golden Eye
•For Your Eyes Only
•On Her Majesty's Secret Service

The Role of Italy & France in Baccarat Game's Development

Italy should be described as a country which had played one of the main roles in baccarat card game's development: thanks to this country we have baccarat as it is now - with its modern object and rules. Though baccarat is sometimes believed to be originated from China, it is Italy which helped baccarat to spread over Europe and move to America afterwards.

Name

The interesting fact is that baccarat has received its name thanks to the Italian language, the word "baccara" means "nothing" or "zero" in Italian; and it is really strange that a card game had been named after the worst result a player can get in it. As far as everybody knows, 0 is the worst number of points which will mean a loss of a player at once!

Anyway, such the fact is.

Who is Felix Falguierein?

Baccarat card game was played with Tarot cards in the middle ages, and it received its modern rules thanks to the Italian gambler of the 14th century - Felix Falguierein. It is believed that Felix had used the myth about an old ritual of Etruscan civilization concerning the way how they chose their next priestess:

"The ritual took place on a high mountains where all young virgins had to throw a nine-sided dice in order to determine their fate: if a girl threw 8 or 9 - she became the next priestess; if 6 or 7 were thrown - she had no right to come into the temple afterwards; if the result was less than 6 - a poor lady had to jump into a deep sea from that mountain and end her life in such a way."

We do not know whether this ritual was true or not, but Mr. Falguierein used it to create the rules of baccarat game: 8 or 9 points determine you as a winner of baccarat at once; 6-7 give you some chances for winning at least; but if you have 0-5 points - very small chances are that you'll finish the game as a winner.

Charles VIII

This King of France was the one who had brought baccarat from Italy in the year of 1490 together with his soldiers during the Franco-Italian war. After that, baccarat began to develop and give a birth to its new variations, such asChermin de Fer & Baccarat en Banque. France had a great influence on this game and helped it to spread over Europe and America afterwards.

Lyle Stuart
