Look at Vietnam. Vietnam had a protest and the government decided to let the people to vote and hold elections. Deng could have changed China making it into a real powerful nation instead of the current corrupted hellhole if he had followed Vietnam political change.
Vietnam still remains a communist country but the leaders were elected by the Vietnamese in a fair and democratic election.
