On the contrary, more people are walking around naked in Sinkapore. The weather must be very hot in Sinkapore. And, the 35 million Canadians
are all frozen to death.:D

Family of man who died in snowstorm cautions drivers

18 December 2010
The Canadian Press

SARNIA—The family of a man who died of exposure in the snowstorm that trapped hundreds of motorists on a southwestern Ontario highway hopes his death will remind others to stay safe in harsh weather.

Neeland Rumble’s family says the 41-year-old had a storm safety kit in his car but left it behind when he tried to walk to work after the vehicle got stuck in a snowdrift.

Rumble was found Tuesday afternoon about 50 metres away from his car.

His body and car were found near Ridgetown, Ont., some 75 kilometres away from the scene of a highway closure that trapped 300 motorists in their vehicles overnight.

Police generally advise drivers to remain in their vehicle if they get stuck in a storm and call for help on a cellphone.

Driveway parking rules to be clarified

Toronto is moving to clear up confusion over how many cars people can park in their driveways.

City council voted to send the issue to the Jan. 27 planning and growth management committee meeting where citizens will be given a chance to have their say.

Councillor John Filion said the city was pursuing a well-intentioned goal of discouraging homeowners from parking cars indiscriminately.

“We wanted to eliminate people just parking cars all over their front lawn and saying it’s their driveway,” said Filion, former chair of the planning committee.

“Sometimes it’s five or six cars. It was to bring some law and order to the situation.”

Filion said the way the rules were written, in suburban areas like his Willowdale ward people could park two cars end-to-end in front of a single car garage. Those with a double-car garage could park up to four cars, two rows of two.

“So far, so good,” Filion said.

Then in a recent revamp of Toronto’s zoning bylaw, a change was made to say you must park within seven metres from the front of the house.

In Willowdale, this would cut parking in half to one car in front of a single car garage and two cars in front of a double garage, Filion said.

What wasn’t highlighted is the seven-metre restriction applies only to new homes, not existing ones, Filion said.

But now, the planners are proposing to drop the seven-metre rule entirely, said Joe D’Abramo, of the city planning department.

“It was just too confusing,” D’Abramo said. “We thought it was going to be a help and it didn’t help the way we worded it.”

The upshot is that you can park as many cars as will fit on your driveway, assuming it hasn’t been illegally widened, he said.

“What we’re trying to do now is clarify that if you build your driveway as allowed under the bylaw, you can park anywhere on the driveway, on your side of the property line.”

I want to renew my S'pore passport via online, and I am in Calgary.
Since there isn't a S'pore embassy or consulate in Canada, how will
I get my new passport back if I apply online?

(ii) For Singaporeans Residing Overseas

http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=125&secid=122

Overseas applicants may submit their applications:

at the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission
(Along with the required documents)

Via Online
(Through Application for Passport On-Line Electronic System (APPLES) e-Service )

Note: The processing time for overseas applications is about 3 - 4 weeks, provided all relevant documents are duly submitted. As ICA will be dispatching the passports back to the Singapore Overseas Mission, Singaporeans residing overseas may collect the passport directly from the mission. They will need to produce the required documents at the time of passport collection if they had submitted their application online.

To the good doctor, dole43 and many others in Canada,

Why do you even bother to waste time engaging these jokers?

If people are so mentally weak that they are easily influenced by negative things they read and discouraged from migrating, then they do not deserve to be in Canada (or we can say they and Singapore deserve each other).

One beauty of Canada is the relatively low number of Singaporeans. I don't mind interacting with fellow independent minded Singaporeans with fully functioning brains. I don't even mind Singapore lovers/ Canada haters as long as they can justify it logically. Problem is most Singaporeans, no matter where they are, have the same flat, boring personality, character and mindset. You will notice the first thing they ask when considering PR is about security and jobs. In other words, they want to move to another Singapore.

We should thank people like our cut and paste queen, Wendy. They are doing a great job keeping the typical ugly Singaporean out of Canada. Why would I want to move to a place infested with them? Unlike the typical Singaporean, I do not want to move from one Singapore to another.

You need to know Canadian winters are harsh and cold and cold is not to be taken lightly.

This Singaporean died at 15 degrees. Not even zero degree. Imagine what would happen when it is -30 degrees. Do give the cold in Canada a serious thought before coming.

Singaporean dies of suspected hypothermia in HK

A 51-year-old Singaporean man died while on a trip to Hong Kong due to suspected hypothermia.

Mr Derek Tham was in Hong Kong to take part in a war game simulation with his relative and friends when he suddenly collapsed .

According to local press reports, he died at around 1pm on Saturday at a war game simulation centre at Yuen Long district, in the northern area of Hong Kong.

Temperatures at the time had plunged to a low of 15 deg C.

According to Hong Kong's Ming Pao Daily news, Mr Tham had arrived at the war game centre and was walking to the venue when he suddenly fainted.

He and others with him were dressed in combat fatigues and had drawn their weapons when the tragedy occurred.

Mr Tham was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead at 2.34pm, reported the Apple Daily.

A doctor that local press reporters spoke to said Mr Tham, who suffered from high-blood pressure, could have died from a heart attack triggered by the cold temperature.

His wife flew to Hong Kong upon learning about his death. They have no children.

Reporters from Singapore's Chinese-language daily, Lianhe Wanbao, who visited the couple's flat in Simei spoke to a neighbour, who said Mrs Tham had asked her to help look after their pet dog as no one else was home.

First, you will lose out in the job hunt because of the ethnic names. Then, even if you get a job, you will make less than Canadian-born workers because foreign qualifications are not recognized.

I totally agree with you man. But sorry I am just having fun poking fun at these things now that I have actually made the move and am surviving here in Canada.

Security and jobs. I guess these are the things that are important and are what have been ingrained in us through the Singapore system. What to do? We don't know much else having born and grown up in Singapore.

I think it is ok to ask questions. But if they only want to hear what they want to hear then that's something that needs to be changed.

You are right about thanking Wendy. I thank her too. I sincerely hope less typical Singaporeans migrate. Anyway not to worry because those that are typical will end up going back to Singapore.

I have a couple of friends and relatives who tell me stories of their friends and relatives who migrated and "could not find a job" so went back to Singapore. Good for them. Good for us.

Wah Hong Kong is such a dangerous place! Everyday people dropping dead from hypothermia! Jia lat! The hotter the better lah. SAF never have any reports of heat injury or heat stroke one.

If you guys are cold up there you should know every year thousands of people from Canada come here to Florida every winter and go back in March. We call them snowbirds. Well I am a snowbird too I guess cause I only have a condo here. Most of them seem to be from Toronto and there are lots of Ontario license plates here. You can see them every day on the water, fishing and enjoying the sunshine. Some guys are in IT and bring thier work here and then go back and it only costs like 79 bucks to fly Toronto to here. Anyway if you are cold this is what the Canadians do.

I see there is a Doc on this thread. Hey man everyday the newspapers here say there is a shortage of docs here and we sure need more of you guys. I wonder why you dont practice here or there???

Because unlike Singapore the medical boards here or there are very strict and protective of members of their profession.

You can't just walk in and take their jobs.

Damn right. Same goes to union jobs. Can't just walk in and take a union job.

from experience, i learnt that migrants who cannot integrate and became disillusioned like to put news clippings up telling others how bad things are around them.

from experience, i learnt that migrants who cannot integrate and became disillusioned like to put news clippings up telling others how bad things are around them.

Why don't they just go back to their home country then? Isn't that an open admission they made the wrong choice for themselves?

I think it is often those who gave up and ALREADY have gone back to their home country who post all these clippings to JUSTIFY to themselves that they made the RIGHT choice to return back to their beloved better home country.

People generally like to justify that what they are doing is the best and most ideal thing that everyone should do. At least that's what I know from my experience as a doctor in Singapore. I have to be a like a salesman and help the customer feel that he is making the best decision for himself. Sometimes they make bad decisions and if you advise them otherwise they get angry. People can be too full of themselves. I learnt not to get too involved in all this. The service guys always tell us, "Customer is always right".

So telling people what they want to hear is usually the easier way out. Customer is happy less headache for me.

You tell the truth that the customer doesn't want to hear, customer is unhappy. Boss is unhappy also because customer is unhappy. And no way I am happy about all that.

Dress up the facts to what the customer wants to hear, the customer is happy, the boss is happy and well maybe just me the professional is not so happy. But 2 out of 3 are happy. So still better right?

Well at least that's how it is in Singapore. Over here if you behave badly to professionals they will tell you off.

Frankly I prefer to know all the bad stuff upfront and be prepared for it. The worst of the worst the better prepared I will be. After that it all just gets easier.

Because unlike Singapore the medical boards here or there are very strict and protective of members of their profession.

You can't just walk in and take their jobs.

The bottom line is are you interested in practising medicine?

If so I realize the medical boards are stringent but I DO SEE many new Indian doctors on my in network provider list who were educated in India, and their numbers seem to be increasing to fill the Doc shortage gap. If they can do it, cant you?

Talking to Doctors today the real issue/challange for you is whether or not 1) you can practise American-Style defensive medicine (i.e. when their knees hurt they expect you to write a scrip for an MRI (Americans like many tests to make sure you rule everything out, plus your malpractise insurance would expect it too) and 2) you can operate like a businessman because dealing with American Insurance companies/coding issues requires significant business acumen.

I do hope you decide to eventually practise because here Doctors are at the very top of the food chain.

I have only ever practised medicine in Singapore. So I don't really know what the system is like in Canada. But I am going to try to get my licence.

American-Style defensive market medicine. Yes I am actually all for practising in that super kiasu kiasee way if the system favours it. I was doing it in Singapore already. The problem is that someone has to pay for all those unnecessary tests. It is very costly to just be doing stuff for the sake of doing them because the customers think it is necessary. Yes it is costly. In Singapore patients love to ask for all these tests but then don't want to pay for it. Neither does the government want to pay for it. So who is going to pay? Yeah and then they send doctors to service quality courses to teach them that the customer is always right some more! What do they think health care is? Running a Disneyland? Running SIA? No one goes to see a doctor thinking of having a good time!

As a doctor, if you made a wrong call and did not do the test when it should have been done, then you are left to burn on your own. Nobody gives two hoots that you were trying to "save costs" for the patient/society/country. With that kind of support, why should I take the risk all by myself? Just do the tests and whatever they want as long as it won't kill/hurt the patient and is not illegal. For the matter, the customer is happy and I get a good feedback letter which scores me brownie points! Well that's as long as someone pays the bill at the end of the day of course.

Dealing with insurance companies? Dealing with third party payment? Well it is already happening in Singapore. Lots of companies tell their employees they have "full medical benefits" when they visit XYZ medical group. Well the truth is they only pay XYZ medical group $20 each time you visit them. And XYZ medical group has to produce a profit with each of your visits. And under the agreement, XYZ medical group cannot tell you that your company only pays $20. Great right? And then you have some strange fantastical insurance plan where one pays a couple hundred dollars for a cardiac bypass operation. From what we know almost all health care plans have a deductible of a few thousand before they pay the rest for you.

Personally I think third party payment is nonsense. All these for profit insurance schemes are designed to just make money for the insurance company. Your well being is the least of their concerns.

You want good care you either pay for it yourself or you rely on a higher authority to manage it. Can you imagine going to a restaurant that someone says you can order anything and then the reality is that someone only pays $5 to the restaurant?

Humans make mistakes. There will be mistakes made in medicine. This is the truth. To expect otherwise is fantasy. There will never be 100% error free. In fact in medicine because of the highly uncertain nature of the work, there will be many mistakes. The key is to make those mistakes small and minor. To go to the extent to do every test possible just to say the doctor has "done everything he could" hence could not have done more is really a waste of resources. When I was training as a young doctor, the only time when I see the senior doctors do all the tests is when they have no idea what is going on. It is like a detective. You don't go ransacking everyone's home in the city to catch the criminal unless....you have no clue where to start. Focused tests to confirm what you suspect. That should be the way. But Singapore has followed USA. Customer is always right.

Trust works both ways. A system where patients don't trust their doctor and doctors don't trust their patients will never work and in Singapore it is moving in that direction.

I think Canada is still ok because the government controls the system totally. Healthcare is one of the things I think is best run in a socialist manner. It should not be capitalistic.
