Shaolin martials actually had its origins in India, brought into China by Dhammo who founded Shaolin Temple. The emphasis on fistworks, legworks and rodworks was because of the Buddhist belief in exercise and self defense only, not to kill, that's why no blades, swords or sabres in traditional Shaolin martial arts.

Before the arrival of Dhammo, there was no martial art in China. You just punch or kick and take a blade and slash.

The original Indian martial arts was fighting with two short sticks, not the single long rods or poles as it had evolved into by the time it reached China. However, don't be mistaken by Dhammo as an Indian. Indian in his time meant Aryan, just like Buddha himself too, more like German than than your street Bangla.

If Chinese Traditional Kung Fu is wayang stuff, how then did legendary masters like Huo Yuan Jia, Guo Yun Shen (郭雲深), etc. managed to beat the crap out of those foreigners in open lei tai competitions? Go and read up on the biography of Huo Yuan Jia and you'll know what kind of fighter he is. There were no MMA back then, but thoese foreigners are mostly professional boxers, wrestlers from Russia, Karate experts etc. So it all boils down to the skill of the individual, and not whether MMA is superior than TMA.

Since most of the karate during that era was based on the practice of robotic kata, it should not be too hard to beat. Do you know that the founder of Shotokan could NOT fight? There were some hardcore guys from Okinawa though. Guys like Motobu Choki.
