Personally I would not put the blame on ignorance. I think it is the fear, like greed, which got the better of many people in the times of their venerability. I strongly believe a calm mind is very critical but our mind are not calm many a times.
Thats why I see very educated god fearing people and very smart people falling victims to conman. Don't know why they made the wrong decisions at the critical junction.

You know why the Buddha forbade people to make a portrait of him for people to Venerate?

carbon dated? so what if it really is the portrait of the Buddha? There will be people disclaiming it as someone else (although the portrait is of a stoic which i believe the buddha will look stoic.)

The Buddha did not allowed a portrait or statue of himself to be erected was because his teachings were not to be practiced by bowing to a lifeless portrait or statue. Therefore his teachings were in words.

You will be puzzled why didnt the Buddha put what he taught into writings until a few centuries later.
