Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mr Charles Chong will serve as Acting Speaker. MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Mr Zainal Sapari will be the new chairman of the town council.

Despite these arrangements, the government must acknowledge that residents of Punggol East need a properly elected MP serving them, and not just another PAP MP covering for the area. They must be given the democratic choice of electing a new MP to replace the one that has just resigned.
