In his opening speech in Parliament today, Speaker of Parliament Mr Michael Palmer accepted the recommendations made on his salary by the Ministerial Salaries Review Committee.

He also revealed that he has received messages of acceptance regarding the recommendations on their salaries from the two Deputy Speakers of Parliament, Mr Charles Chong and Mr Seah Kian Peng; President Tony Tan and his predecessor SR Nathan; and former Speaker of Parliament Mr Abdullah Tarmugi as well as former Deputy Speakers of Parliament Mr Matthias Yao and Ms Indranee Rajah.

According to the review done by the committee, the Speaker of Parliament's wage will see the largest percentage cut of 53 per cent, to $550,000, while the salary of Singapore's president may be cut by 51 per cent to $1,540,000 (assuming 1 month AVC).

The committee also recommended that the Deputy Speaker's allowance continue to be pegged to 15 per cent of a full-time Speaker. This means the annual allowance of the Deputy Speaker will be $82,500, a 15 per cent drop from the 2010 allowance.

Gan Thiam Poh on Palmer affair "Fear not, we have high standards in party."

MPs who worked with Mr Michael Palmer reacted with shock and disbelief when they heard the announcement of his resignation and affair.

When contacted, MP Zainal Sapari, who is taking over from Mr Palmer as chairman of Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council, did not even know the reason why Mr Palmer has quit.

“Wow. I can’t believe it,” he said, when informed by The Straits Times that Mr Palmer had resigned because of an affair with a People’s Association staff member.

He said he was only told of the resignation in the morning by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean but was not given the reason. Mr Palmer’s former constituency, Punggol East was formerly a part of the GRC.

Mr Zainal, who is currently overseas, said he did not know the PA staff member in question.

Another Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Gan Thiam Poh also expressed surprise at the turn of events. Mr Gan worked closely with Mr Palmer as their divisions were next to each other.

He said Mr Palmer had not been behaving unusually recently, and had always seemed to be “a very nice person, a caring MP and Speaker of the House.”

He said: “We want to assure all residents that we will do our best to make sure there is no drop in the service level.”

Asked if he thought the incident will affect the public’s confidence in the PAP, Mr Gan said no.

“Voters know we are working hard to serve them. This is an isolated incident... Mike made a quick decision, he felt he needed to be accountable for his actions, and he left. So people know that the PAP is a party that emphasises on values,” he said.

He added that internally, party members “will continue having faith in the party, knowing we have high standards”.

When contacted, deputy speaker of the house Charles Chong said he heard about the resignation just before the media conference, and is still trying to find out more information.

Mr Chong will be Acting Speaker. The Prime Minister will nominate a new Speaker for Parliament’s consideration when it next meets.

When he inserted his kukujiao into the hole, he never thought of accountability?:oIo:

The right to contest should belong to WP. PAP fishing desperately for at least one third party to split the vote.

I am not sure why there should be an automatic assumption of a straight fight. WP and SDP have very different philosophies.

While neither DPM Teo or Mr Palmer wanted to delve into the details of the affair, DPM Teo did reveal that the PA staff member has also resigned.

"What the staff member did was wrong. The staff member has tendered her resignation and this is being accepted by PA. PA expects its staff members to maintain higher standards of behaviour and conduct and in this case, the staff member had fallen short."

He was never a nice guy, even in the days when he was just a low down lawyer attending the AGMs of the Chinese Swimming Club to ensure that procedures were correct for the erection of committees etc. He always managed to look sick and irritated when procedural questions were asked of him, year after year.

Recently, at a friendly golf tournament, he was aloof and stood apart from every body else before teeing off. His DAD Vernon Palmer, the former news reader was a much nicer person - always with a ready smile for trolls working in the old radio set-up. I am sure his dad is quite proud of him now, from his grave.

Does Michael have a brother called Ian?

All the MPs will use Geroge Yeo go with the flow pattern.

All pretend to be like George Yeo 'go with the flow' just heard the news, as if?

Let's see that MP with 64 jobs respond to this?

Can add one more job (no. 65) to his porfolio? Advicer to Palmer.
