The body of the late Lance-Corporal (LCP) Muhammad Fahrurrazi Bin Salim, 20, was found in the Sungai Batu Apoi river, Temburong at 2:55am, during the early hours this morning (14 Aug).
One of the SAF search parties, which had continued the search throughout the night, found LCP Fahrurrazi’s body about 200m from where he was first reported missing.
LCP Fahrurrazi’s body will be flown back this afternoon from Brunei in a RSAF C-130 transport plane for a military funeral in Singapore.
Dr Ng Eng Hen, the Minister of Defence, has written a letter to the family of the late LCP Fahrurrazi expressing deepest condolences for their loss. MINDEF is assisting the family in their time of grief.
MINDEF said a full investigation will be conducted on the incident.
LCP Fahrurrazi was first reported missing in the Brunei Temburong training area on Sunday, 12 Aug 2012. LCP Fahrurrazi, a known swimmer, was the coxswain in a convoy of four boats to provide safety coverage for the water crossing segment of a jungle training exercise. LCP Fahrurrazi was on the fourth boat.
Few minutes after leaving the embarkation point, the third boat realised LCP Fahrurrazi’s boat was not following them. The boats then went back to search for him. His boat was found intact but LCP Fahrurrazi was nowhere to be found. It was daylight when the incident happened with clear weather and calm water conditions.
LCP Fahrurrazi, from the 1st Transport Battalion, had been in Brunei since Nov last year and is scheduled to complete his NS in about 4 months’ time.
