<!--smart_paging_filter_done-->A cyclist was seen on video taking up a lane near Phillip Street in the Raffles Place area causing a motorist to slow down, which resulted in the cyclist flashing his middle finger to the driver behind him. Two Stomp contributors had provided details about the incident as well as the video link.

According to a Lianhe Wanbao report, the cyclist directed his anger at the driver, a 34-year-old human resource executive known as Miss Pan, after she horned twice at him.

Miss Pan was quoted in the report as saying that she was driving alone to work on the leftmost lane of the road when she saw the cyclist in the middle of the lane. She sounded her car's horn at the cyclist, who was identified as a foreigner in the report, to alert him to her vehicle.

She horned again, this time using hand gestures to ask the cyclist to move to the side of the lane so that she can speed up. At this point, the cyclist can be seen on video looking behind to his right, then looking to his left when he flashed is middle finger at Miss Pan.

Miss Pan also claimed that he seemed to be cursing at her as well. Stomp contributor Alex chided the cyclist for being rude, while another contibutor Phua wrote: "An inconsiderate cyclist hogging the road. "He was thinking he has the right of way to hog the road and verbally abuse other motorists.

"Car recorders are the GREATEST invention on earth to capture such ungracious acts."

That's not road hogging. All experienced cyclists ride 1 to 1.5 metres from the gutter. This is to prevent cars from shaving past.

In fact, this guideline is given in many city cycling tips :

http://www.toronto.ca/bug/commutertips.htm

  • Be Predictable
Cyclists are predictable when they ride in a straight line and when they communicate (signal) their intentions about changing position or direction. By riding in a straight line it is easier for traffic around you to predict your actions. Know how to position yourself in traffic. Ride 1 meter away from the curb, never in the gutter, and out of the way of opening doors along parked cars.

The car driver was asking him to move aside so she could overtake. What's wrong with that? Instead he flipped her the bird. Disgusting behaviour regardless of the nationality!

Its 4.45pm & raining cats & dogs.
I dare those lancheow cyclists to use the road now. Its a bet between being mowed by a car or being struck by lightning!

Yeah these cyclists are so aggressive and badly behaved, never pay road tax and no need to observe road traffic rules when cycling. The government should license the bicyles and make them pay road tax and insurance and be held accountable for accidents.

Well said . . . .

Well said . . . .

May sound nice in a forum where nonsense can be spewed but it's nevertheless erroneous information.

From the LTA :

We refer to your email on 17 April 2013 to REACH.We appreciate and share your concerns for the well being of all road users, be they pedestrians, cyclists or motorists. Public roads are intended to be used by all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians. They are built and maintained using public funds collected from [FONT=inherit !important]general taxes, including those who do not use motorised vehicles. All road users should use the roads responsibly with consideration for other road users. To have safer roads, we are reaching out via public education together with the Traffic Police as well as the Safe Cycling Task Force.[/FONT]

In the not too distant future, the whole of the CBD will be car free as more and more cities are realising the advantages of such a move.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_car-free_places

[h=3]Benefits and problems of carfree developments[edit][/h]Several studies have been done on European carfree developments. The most comprehensive was conducted in 2000 by Jan Scheurer.[SUP][3][/SUP] Other more recent studies have been made of specific carfree areas such as Vienna's Floridsdorf carfree development.[SUP][4][/SUP]
Characteristics of carfree developments:

  • very low levels of car use, resulting in much less traffic on surrounding roads.
  • high rates of walking and cycling.
  • more independent movement and active play amongst children.
  • less land taken for parking and roads - more available for green or social space.
The main benefits found for carfree developments:

  • Low atmospheric emissions.
  • Low road accident rates.
  • Better built environment conditions.
  • Discouragement of private car and other motorized vehicles (measure of travel demand management).
  • Encouragement of activo modes.

we need a singapore cycling guideline. all experienced singaporean cyclists (me included) ride as close to the side of the lane as possible in order not to be a nuisance to vehicles which we have been brought up to believe, own the roads.

Sam, you've forgotten in Singapore, Asian Values take precedence. Unless it is legislated, all the towkays and wannabes will be riding in air-conditioned comfort of their automobiles. Their idea of burning calories and sweating it out takes place at the health spa.

Cheers!

Cyclist is right nothing wrong as long cyclist not swing left or right(keeping to one lane).
Driver should just follow patiently behind and not horn (because sudden horn will make cyclist nerves and cause accident). Eg if I drive car slowly in left most lane and car behind keep horn. I will show my middle finger also. Why driver cannot overtake on the right lane(fast lane).

Why cyclistS? I only see one in the picture. Anyway, here are the rules:

So i this case i would say the cyclist broke the rules by riding in the center of the lane:

8. Every bicycle shall be ridden close to the left hand edge of the roadway and in such a manner as not to obstruct vehicles moving at a faster speed.

When it comes to manners however they both suck. The cyclist could have simply made way for the car after it honked at him and the car could have just been patient and overtake the cyclist a few seconds later.

2 losers in 1 spot...
