Yup those southern most thai provinces used to be a part of some malay kingdom but that was history. The thais were stronger and thus managed to accquire them as part of their territory in fact if not for the brits and other western powers i believe they could have probably accquired who knows half of present day malaysia, anyway that's out of the topic.

So what matters is who is in majority and who controls the military and the economy. In Singapore, Chinese control all. In Malaysia, the Malays are the majority, they control military but the Chinese control the economy.
