Anything About Taiwan

More on Taiwan politics.
The latest development in the county mayor elections is the former Green party man Yang Qiuxing quitting the party and standing as an independent in larger Kaoshiung. Yang was the mayor of Kaoshiung county while Chen Ju was mayor of Kaoshiung city, but the former lost in the party internal elections to the latter.

Yang now claims to be going for the middle ground vote, which is interesting because Taiwan has historically all been about Blue or Green. Some people are saying that he is only now middle ground because he wants to contest the elections as an independent.

got read these 2 English websites.
http://michaelturton.blogspot.com/
http://a-gu.blogspot.com/

the first website talk about life in Taiwan and plenty about politics.
The author is a hardcore "green" Ah Moh with a taiwanese wife who always 唱衰 KMT/praises his beloved DPP. too biased IMO but he gives good detailed green camp view of Taiwan politics which I find very informative, afterall I watch only blue propaganda.

Thanks for the links. But there's really too much information in those sites, even for someone who is interested in Taiwan.............
Prefer to relax and watch the occasional variety programme or talk show and laugh at the entertainment.

Both Blue and Green camps have their strong and weak points. Blue is made up of many fuddy duddies and arrogant "elites" (sound familiar?), but they also have some sound minds trying to do good for the country. The Taiwan people don't appreciate Ma enough, history may prove that he was the best president they have had in the last 20 years, which is not difficult considering who the last 2 were. Green is useful because they make the government accountable and transfers power to the people, which is what SG is sorely lacking. But many of the green politicians also talk a lot of cock, with their main focus on trying to smear those in power in the blue camp.

As for political and social commentators, listen to them for entertainment, but take most of what they say with a pinch of salt, for both sides.
Btw, what's the names of the green ang moh and his wife?

I think Taiwanese are the worst of the lot. They are crude, rude and entirely uncivil.

You should see how their private enterprises exploit the chinese when China first opened up its economy.

To sum up, I think they are LOSERS. This is of course, just my personal opinion.

PS. To top it all, their TV drama sucks, BIG TIME.

Chinese tycoon hands out cash in Taiwan

TAIPEI (AFP) – China's most famous philanthropist on Thursday started handing out cash on the first day of a controversial trip to Taiwan that has sparked criticism and protests from anti-China groups.

Chen Guangbiao, who made his fortune recycling construction materials, handed three traditional "red envelopes" containing a total of Tw$70,000 ($2,300) to a woman who had been waiting for him at his hotel in Taipei.

"I've never counted so many banknotes. I don't know what to do. I will use the money to take care of my 88-year-old mother," the woman told reporters, her voice cracking with emotion.

Chen, who is well-known in China for his flamboyant style of charity, held up a wad of Tw$2,000 notes spread out in a fan shape, surrounded by a crowd of photographers and cameramen.

Chen, leading a group of businessmen from China, arrived in an airport outside Taipei late Wednesday where he was greeted by some anti-China protesters holding a banner reading "Welcome to the group of hypocrites".

"I will deliver every penny that I've promised... and I hope to come every year," the tycoon told reporters at the airport.

Chen has said that he planned to give away more than $15 million to the poor in Taiwan, in a high-profile gesture suggestive of a shift in relative wealth between China and Taiwan.

He was scheduled to travel to the central county of Hsinchu later Thursday where he would give red envelopes each containing Tw$10,000 to about 300 under-privileged families, officials said.

The visit came at a time of easing tensions between China and Taiwan, although Beijing has sworn to retake the island ever since the two sides split in 1949 after a civil war.

Taiwan is five times wealthier than China in terms of gross domestic product per capita, even though the mainland's economy is more than 10 times larger than its neighbour's.

they dun have to start a war to take over taiwan

They'll have to look like they're seriously contemplating and ready for war, militarily and economically, to drive down the "price" of "buyback" Taiwan. "Price" in this sense doesn't mean dollar or renminbi only, it also means political equation.

I really can't agree with you. With all the recent news of fake this and that, are you prepared to risk yr life eating out in China from their unconscionable sources?

I have stayed in both places and I will bet on Tawian's food eateries (al fresco or not) anytime in hygiene stds, health risks, genuineness, and absolute confidence. So it's not true to say that we look to China. At least not now. maybe in the far future when they have developed morally.

That's all they are good for. Can their food and scenery compare to that of China?

When people talk about Chinese culture and Chinese food, they look to China, not the renegade province.

Whoever gave must be the first owner. Now who could that be if not China?

Taiwan is definitely not a renegade province of People's Repulic of China (PROC or Mainland China). The island was given to Japanese during Qing Dynasty (清朝),and

Exactly. China owns Taiwan. Whether China is under Ming Dynasty or Qing Dynasty or ROC or PRC, China owns Taiwan. It's like whether Republican or Democrat is in power in US, US owns Alaska and Hawaii.

China under Qing couldn't cede Taiwan to Japan if it didn't own it in the first place, ditto HK. China is now under PRC, UK still has to cede HK back to China whether Qing or PRC. Japan lost Taiwan back to China under ROC. No Japanese disputed that. Now it's domestic affair between ROC and PRC, but with the added equation of USA defending ROC on Taiwan.

soft power - yes basically taiwan is dead. hong kong and macau will be dead in 47 years time. when 1 state 1 rule start to run.

The girls in Taipei City Xi-men-ding shopping area are quite young & pretty.

Plenty of discussions about his method of charity and his possible motivation.
Some think that he's a braggart and show-off. Others dislike him because he's from China or feel that he's trying to make a name for himself and his business. There are those who are angry that there are poor Taiwanese who have to kneel down to get the ang pow.

On the other side of the fence, some are saying that at the end of the day, he's still giving money away. His methods and even motivation don't really matter.

Perhaps we can look at it this way:
-- Give and keep quiet is better than give and say so.
-- Give and say so is better than don't give and keep quiet.
-- Don't give and keep quiet is better than don't give and say "got give". :o :D
