any teachers out here?

I tried a mid career switch in 05 to be a teacher, cos i enjoyed teaching in my professional career. I was posted to a neighbourhood school before NIE, and i lasted about 2 weeks.... Remember the movie, Gangster Paradise? It may seem surreal, but that was how it felt...

I dun know, I met a lot of teachers who relish the challenge and they love the changes they bring to the students, but i personally found it very very difficult. Maybe it has to do with my people skill...

I think you have to really feel the calling, and believe in the differences you can make... It has to be something you believe in, otherwise, there are easier ways to make a living...

However, I think if you are good with handling kids or teens, the main motivation is NOT money, then you may find the career to be very rewarding... Just my 2 cents worth.

Good luck.

I agree the main motivation should not be money, but I am not sure that all teachers are in it for the love of it. My problem with S'pore teachers is that they just teach the subject matter. Where as, in many western education system, the students are taught the subject matter as well as how to be a good citizen. They are taught their rights, the constitution, and now about the protection of the environment, as well as the heritage and culture of their country. I don't see this happening in S'pore. I know they are hampered by what the MOE tells them to teach, but mainly, they need to teach some independent thinking.

Any schoolkid could teach you a thing or two about keeping sane, they wouldn't need psycho's like you telling them what to do.

Hello,QXD,dun test my patience,got limit one...

One of the reasons that I want to teach is to relive my teenager days, happiest time of my life!:D I will like to tell the students that if any of them get into trouble, they can look for me anytime! How I wish someone can help me when those assholes screw me up...:(

Anyway,I have been tired and stressed out cos' of corporate life, politicking, hypocrisy from all levels, back stabbing-serves no purpose in life! I want to do something more meaningful so that I will not regret later in life.:)

is it difficult to teach students nowadays?

everyone has the wrong impression. actually you dont have to be good at teaching to be a successful teacher. what you need is something different from others that can show off to your principal, like IT or Art.

I have come across teachers who are bad at teaching, a lot of marking errors, unable to cover syllabus on time, low passing rate but they promote much faster then other teachers. This kind of system to judge the performance is a big failure.

When you find out most of them don't give a shit of what you are doing for them, it becomes disheartening. Only if you are lucky enough, you may have a handful of them that appreciate your effort.
Go try out as a tutor first and you will know what I mean.
Teaching in school will be worst.
Better off as Taxi driver.:D

Yes, independent thinking is what is lacking in SG education. We need more teachers that encourages independent thinking. Then again, maybe thats what MOE wants, if there are more students that have independent thinking in cultivated in them, PAPee won't be able to win elections anymore. ;)

Here are some positives

1) Its a nobel cause
2) World's highest paid salary range
3) Iron rice bowl.
4) If you are keen and sincere, you can mould cohorts of students that can make a difference.
5) There is no single style or method of teaching. You can adopt the style that is suitable for you and yet get results.

The first few years are the hardest, as you will have to get your group dynamics right and your teaching materials in order. After that, it will be incremental effort.

There are also perks that are not well known such as sabbatical to pursue post grad courses every 6 years or so which are fully paid.

PAP looks after the teachers very well as they constitute the largest single group in the civil service payroll and they can influence the formative years of young sungaporeans.

and what makes you tbink that these are not there in skools? They are existent too, but at the end of the day, let me tell you, it is your passion for the job that keeps you going. And yes, I inculcate good values and moral ethics in the kids i teach with lots of philosophical questions that beckon

heheh...

on contrary to what common folks think, MOE has been embarking on Thinking School Learning Nation since SM Goh's time.

if you look at the profile of the schools these days, the number of younger teachers can easily hit close to 60% of the teaching fraternity. bear in mind that the baby boomers would be retiring soon enough over the next 5 years, that would easily push the number of young teachers to easily over 70%, of which the other 30% of the fraternity being made up of the folks who have embarked on their first or second connect plan.

these younger teachers are made up of folks whom dared to make a difference, not forgetting to mention that the turn-over rate is pretty high; these mavericks would have, despite their short stint in the fraternity, already make a good impact on the young ones during their formative years.

these good folks have, in a way, challenged the kids to start pondering on many issues. some people may think that these mavericks are a tad too loutish to make the cuttings of a teacher, but it is these mavericks that pushes the boundaries and making that slight difference along the way.

besides the teacher profile, allow me to quantify that kids these days have the ability to think, but is unwilling to think. better nutrition and living conditions have produced children with higher IQ, undeniably true as our population is measured to be one of the highest IQ, on the average, in the world.

you ask the kids to play Dota, WarCraft, Maple, they can easily attain the highest scores much faster than anyone of us. you ask the kids to memorize the special items in the games, the spells used and the best tactics for winning the battle, they can do it without batting their eyelids. you get the kids to memorize the Bolshevik revolution, they cringe and they curse and swear. i think you get my drift.

maybe MOE can start a brand new IT gaming department, creating games based on these historical events and of other disciplines and allow the kids to learn thru' these games. back to where we were on independent thinking, these kids have a mind of their own these days, no doubts about that. ever noticed the trend of PAP losing ground over the last few elections? :D:D:D

Our teachers got no life experience. Only know teacher life since graduating. No use one.

somehow i felt that teachers who cared made the most difference. doesn't matter if the teacher has other life experiences or not. one may have the richest in life experience but unwilling to share it with the kids, does it make any difference? anyway, just my personal thoughts and you may choose to disagree :o:o:o

bro,

i must quantify that tutorship and teaching in school are 2 different ball games :D:D:D

teaching includes a lot of admin work, from student contact time to departmental meetings to committee meetings to staff meetings, that is just to boot. include form-teachership or coform-teachership and CCAs... the list can go on and on :eek::eek:

tutoring? a breeze in the park :D:D:D

Interesting, thanks for the info, I've been out of Singapore too long and could only relate to what I have experienced. I suppose if this does continue, PAP could lose in 20 years time?

You are right about young teachers though, I remember meeting teachers that smoke and goes to devil's bar a couple of years back. If only my teachers were that cool back then. :D

bro,

this is one thing i have to credit the PAP for. at any given time and space, education has to be the key pillar to any society.

the ability to think is the hallmark of our civilization and if you think about it, most problems in our society is due to the lack of thinking or too much of second-guessing.

i reckoned the NE committees in the schools will be over-drive mode in due time :eek::eek:

That is how sinkies in sinkie organisation which is run by a bunch of worthless sinkie losers manage their work.

i dunno but those people who study in sinkie schools seems to e extremely balless. That is not bery healthy.

The genesis was to move the teachers from communist front which captured a number of teachers especially Chinese Ed. That the reason why a PAP MP always led the teachers union in the first 2 decades ie Lawrence Sia. The Chinese Language Teachers Union is led by another PAP MP and is one of the most powerful faction in the PAP. (Despite IM forbidding membership in political parties). Perks were offered to keep the teacher from becoming communist as they formed the biggest component of civil service. This included the first private estate for civil servants, something not even offered to the elite Admin service.

As a result teachers and society benefitted.
