AMK murder-suicide: A neighbour's account
Is there anything that could have been done to avoid this triple-tragedy? A STOMPer, who witnessed the aftermath of a tragic murder-suicide at Ang Mo Kio on Saturday, recalls the events on that fateful night.
On November 7, residents of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 were told to evacuate their units as a fire had begun on the sixth floor of block 543.
According to the Straits Times, neighbours noticed a man acting strangely on the ledge at the 12<SUP>th</SUP> storey. Shortly after, he jumped and ended his own life.
Ng Chee Kiang, 39, seems to have set his four-room flat on the sixth floor on fire before proceeding to the 12<SUP>th</SUP> storey.
His two children, aged 3 and 5, were found dead in the bedroom.
It is suspected that they had died of strangulation as their bodies were not burnt.
The New Paper also reports that Ng had sent his maid on a shopping errand while his wife was at work when the incident happened.
In an email dated November 9, the STOMPer says:
“The video shows what happened after the fateful incident on November 7, Saturday, at Blk 543 Ang Mo Kio.
“I was alerted of the tragedy by my sister, who had initially thought that there was a fight at the carpark but later saw smoke coming out of block 543 and many people gathered below.
“I saw some SCDF personnel running along the sixth floor corridor like they were chasing someone.
“After a short while, I decided to go to the carpark but midway, I heard a loud thud and a crashing sound.
“When I came closer to the block, I saw some SCDF staff handling a body which was lying on the ground and several other officers surrounding the injured person.
“Now that we know he and his two kids have passed away, I wonder if that man's death could have been prevented?
“The picture attached shows a hole in the shelter damaged by the man's fall.”
