So the government has to investigate and this was spilled out to the press on the ongoing investigations. Once that happened, it was bad for Ng as the government has to be seen acting. So I guess the key witness lies in this lady Cecilia Sue ... I think the prosecution were well aware of what will turn out and tried to pre-emp her from standing as a witness and since this was denied, they might as well get the "shit" out early and plan a more vigorous attack later on the gratification part which is the key, never mind if Cecilia is a slut.
For the judge, I think he must be wondering how to act ...He can base a judgement on the strict interpretation on the Corruption Act ... however, if the defense manage to thoroughly discredit the key witness, the lay public will be left wondering how come Ng can get convicted if the witness is NOT reliable, then the issue for the government is 'credibility' on whether they are "behind the scenes" manipulating the verdict. Poor judge .... his whole career could be seemingly "jeopardised' ....:-p
The government in this case, I reckon, simply was unable to close the case quietly once the details are leaked out. I think they have to be seen as letting the judiciary to act "on its own".
But things as they are in Singapore, you should know how to read tea leaves and read them well to survive here. Poor judge and I think he probably hopes things are more clear cut for him to act definitely .... not if it is in a grey area ..

The judge will probably be over stressed and traumatized by this. He will leave his post after this case, go into teaching somewhere. However lingering effects of this case will cause him to lose his judgement and he probably end up having an affair with one of his students. Oops we come full circle on this!!!

To save face, the trial proceeded and the promise was made to look after the accuseds. GCT revealed that to SPH journalists at Seattle while visiting Boeing.
As the trial progressed it became apparent that Tharman's charge could not hold water and likely to be acquitted. Richard Magnus, the trail judge who was DJ Court 1 and due for a place in the High Court bench decided that another charge was more relevant and then convicted him. An unusual move. He read the tea-leaves like all civil servants in the usual manner and got it wrong in the end. He never made the bench. All were convicted and Lim Kim San as the SPH Chairman was not told to appeal. So none of them appealed despite all of them holding senior positions and very unusual.
To cut a long story short, the Govt made good its promise and all rose to to greater heights. The Perm Sec who lodged the complaint that led to the investigation lost his job. Only Richard Magnus is still scratching his head. Tharman as we all know got into the Admin Scheme shortly after, his boss who testified against him in court ended up reporting to him.

If she is treated as a hostile witness and impeached, the prosecution can subsequently prosecute her for perjury. Bonus trial for the public. Basically her statements and her court testimony are no longer in line - either her statements or the testimony is false.
Witnesses turning hostile is not uncommon and it does not mean the trial will collapse. They can introduce the statements provided earlier by the same witness to seek conviction.
