[h=5]Pritam Singh[/h]Breaking fast at Darul Arqam this evening was like a homecoming of sorts as I renewed acquaintances with some wonderful long-serving volunteers. Darul Arqam runs many public talks and lectures about the Islamic faith and their doors are open to all. Before Iftar today, Ustaz Syed Esa Alkaff spoke insightfully about the "levels of fasting" and how they corresponded to one's imaan (faith). More talks lined up next week - go to www.darul-arqam.org.sg for more information. Selamat Ramadan to all Muslim brothers and sisters!
[h=5]Chen Show Mao[/h]Date night for MP Faisal and me.
Last weekend, thanks to the kindness of all involved, I was able to break fast with the congregation at Masjid En Naem in our community, join Iftar at the Darul Arqam, attend a talk by Ustaz Syed Esa Alkaff on the subject of fasting, share porridge with fellow residents at one of our newer blocks, and attend the finale performance of Cook a Pot of Curry by Alfian Sa’at and Glen Goei.
All that food and talk of food helped make other topics of conversation go down more easily, like immigration, entitlement, compromise, charity and gratitude.

Mdm Koh is not sure what the coming month of the Seventh moon will bring. With its offering rituals, it typically means big seasonal sales for her incense store inside the Hainanese Village Market at Blk 105 Hougang Ave 1 (near bus stops #63289 Aljunied CC and #63281 Blk 105 Mkt/FC for bus services 53 from Serangoon Stn, 113 and 115 from Kovan Stn and 62 from Aljunied Stn). Yet business has been trending down significantly since 2008, which she attributes largely to changing practices among the young of how we remember loved ones who have departed.
Our rituals root us to our families, Mdm Koh feels, not only by keeping alive memories of the deceased, but also by sharing the experience with the living. She hopes more young people will come to see the value of all that.
In the meantime, there is the inventory of those nice paper mache Gucci loafers to take care of.
[h=1]13.07.14 Paya Lebar Division 1-Day Tangkak Durian Tour[/h]Paya Lebar Division's 1-Day Tangkak Durian Tour this year was held on 14 July 2013. Residents gathered early at the pick-up point, waiting for the buses to arrive. It was a wet morning but it did not douse the enthusiasm of the residents and bus leaders who were looking forward to a great day ahead.
The day's itinerary included a visits to bee farm, brown rice factory, the Gunung Ledang National Park and of course the durian plantation. There was a small hiccup along the way where one of the buses broke down, but while waiting for the replacement bus, residents had a good engagement session with Mr Chen and took many photographs.
The dinner at the end of the day was as usual a grand affair where everyone from the many buses gathered in a big hall to enjoy dinner together. Other than the lucky draw, this year there was also a surprise birthday celebration for a 19-year-old resident. Her family came as a group and brought the cake along.
We arrived back in Singapore at about 11.30pm, tired but looking forward to next year's trip!
