Is the WP a real opposition party?

I dont recall them asking stinging questions in ParLEEment.

They are a "tow the line" opposition like Chiam See Tong.

Real oppos are Jeyaratnam and SDP.

That is why they keep getting hammered by our media.

You are right! They are merely playing safe, acting out their role as a responsible constructive opposition! Fiery and inconvenient questions in and out of Parliament only asked during the time of JBJ. If CSJ got in, he would have taken over JBJ's mantle of a hardcorte opposition.

As an aside and sorry ah, I think you meant to say "toe the line" instead of tow the line.

Mothership’s head honcho throws shade at Lee Hsien Yang-Tan Cheng Bock meeting
By Jewel Stolarchuk -November 15, 201820001

Although the surprise breakfast meeting between Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Tan Cheng Bock occurred over a week ago, both prominent figures still appear to be on the minds of Singaporeans who are hoping that the duo will join hands to lead the opposition during the next General Election.

No one seriously expected that Lee – the son of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and younger brother of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong – would meet Dr Tan (a former presidential candidate who has been asked to lead an opposition coalition) – that too at such a public venue.

Lee told the press, “We were just here to have breakfast,” while Dr Tan revealed on his Facebook page that they spoke about the “current state of politics in Singapore.”

The unanticipated meeting quickly became the talk of the town when photos from the breakfast made their way online.

While the meeting seemed to be an informal, casual meetup, one local publication claims that “there was every intention” to make the meeting publicly known. Covering the meeting on its website, Mothership.sg shared “three observations on how we can make sense of this breakfast meeting”.

The article, which throws shade at Dr Tan and his intentions in meeting Lee, is written by Martino Tan. Presently serving as managing editor and deputy managing director at Mothership, Tan has been leading the editorial team since the website’s inception in 2013.

Before his work with Mothership, Tan served as a Senior Manager (Online Communications) in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for nearly a year and a half, between 2012-2013. Tan has been credited by mainstream media for helping to start Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Facebook page. PM Lee joined Facebook a few months after Tan started working at the PMO.

Before his stint at the PMO, Tan worked for over two years at the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts.

Tan’s coverage of the Lee Hsien Yang-Tan Cheng Bock meeting starts with a jibe that Dr Tan is “shopping around for a new party to start or join.” This remark is conspicuously crossed out in what appears to be Tan’s attempt at sarcasm.

Asserting that Dr Tan is “looking for new friends…As long as those new peers are not from the PAP,” Tan goes on to characterise Lee Hsien Yang as “a person who is quite unlikely to join the PAP.”

Noting that news of the meeting made “a few opposition supporters” like activists and former Reform Party candidates Roy Ngerng and Gilbert Goh excited, Tan made the “three observations on how we can make sense of this breakfast meeting.”

First, Tan said that “There was every intention to make the casual breakfast meeting publicly known,” and asserted that the intent of the meeting “was to create a photo opportunity for Singaporeans to speculate what the meeting was about.”

Noting that the meeting was photographed by reporters from the national broadsheet and the Chinese daily, Tan wrote: “This means that there is a high likelihood of Tan or Lee’s camp leaking the news to the media in advance. Unless you believe that the mainstream media actually stalk Tan and Lee daily.”

Tan’s second observation was on the pair’s choice of location for the meeting, as he noted that the West Coast Food Centre falls within Dr Tan’s old Ayer Rajah constituency, back when he was a ruling party parliamentarian. Noting that it was Dr Tan who chose the location, Martino Tan calls the choice of venue “a nice segue” to Dr Tan’s association to the constituency.

The former civil servant’s final observation delivers the most digs, directed at Dr Tan. Suggesting that the “hope and change” message Dr Tan is hoping to spread “may work better with a fresh face leader with no political baggage,” Tan indicates that a Pakatan Harapan like victory that the opposition here may be hoping for might not work with Dr Tan at the helm.

In May, calls for Dr Tan to “do a Mahathir” resounded when Dr Mahathir united the opposition against his former party and led them to victory in what became Malaysia’s first transition of power since independence.

Noting that Dr Mahathir “was perceived as someone with nothing to prove,” the Mothership editor asserts that Dr Tan, “on the other hand, seems to be on permanent campaign mode since PE 2011.”

In his conclusion, Martino Tan seemed to imply that Singaporeans do not take “Tan’s national electoral ambitions” seriously and that Dr Tan may be taken seriously if he can attract current MPs to his cause, instead of “some disgruntled ex-PAP MPs. Or the prime minister’s brother.”

Describing that Mothership.sg “is styled in the mould of popular American site Buzzfeed,” the national broadsheet previously reported that the website is “backed by a social enterprise chaired by civil service veteran Philip Yeo.” Former PAP politician and ex-foreign affairs minister George Yeo, has been listed as a contributor to the site.

SINGAPORE: The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) would welcome Mr Lee Hsien Yang, should the brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong decide to join its ranks, its Secretary General Tan Cheng Bock said on Friday (Jul 26).
But, Mr Tan added, Mr Lee would have to “adhere” to the party’s terms.

“Lee Hsien Yang and I, we’re good friends,” said Mr Tan at a press conference held at Swissotel Merchant Court, where he was outlining the reasons for setting up his party.

“I think you all have seen him walking around with me. And I must say is that if he wants to join me, he’s always free to (do so).
“(So long as he adheres) to my PSP terms. Because many people think that he’s coming to join me because of his own personal agenda.

“He must make clear what his personal agenda is. If he ever joins, he must join on my terms.”
Mr Lee, who has been seen in public with Dr Tan on more than one occasion, said in a Facebook post earlier this year said that Dr Tan was "the leader Singapore deserves".
"I have known Cheng Bock for many years and he has consistently put the interests of the people first," said Mr Lee in the post dated Jan 24.
"We are fortunate that he has stepped forward to serve Singapore."

Mr Lee along with his sister Lee Wei Ling, has been involved in a spat with PM Lee over whether founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s family home at 38 Oxley Road be demolished in due course.
While Dr Tan neither named the candidates the PSP will be fielding during the next General Election nor the constituencies the party would be contesting, he said he would assess all potential candidates.
“I’ve been going around; many people have approached me, offered their services to me,” said Dr Tan.
“Some also … were former candidates from other parties. But it doesn’t matter. Because so long as I assess that their heart is in the right place I will pick them.
"To tell you the numbers of how many candidates I have, I’m sorry, can’t tell you because I’ll wait till Nomination Day.”
Dr Tan had announced his return to politics earlier this year, filing an application with the Registry of Societies to form a new political party on 16 Jan. His party was officially registered at the end of March.
A Member of Parliament for 26 years, Dr Tan ran for President in 2011 and narrowly lost to Dr Tony Tan.
In March 2016, Dr Tan announced his intention to run again. But he was unable to do so as the next election was reserved for Malay candidates, following changes to the Constitution that stated that if there is no President from a particular racial community for five consecutive terms, the next term will be reserved for a President from that community.
Dr Tan had also mounted a legal challenge to the reserved election. The Court of Appeal dismissed his application.

SINGAPORE: There has been an “erosion” of transparency, independence and accountability within the Government, said Dr Tan Cheng Bock on Friday (Jul 26), explaining the reasons behind his decision to set up a new political party.
“I believe the processes of good governance have gone astray,” said Dr Tan, the secretary-general of the new Progress Singapore Party (PSP), at a press conference held at Swissotel Merchant Court on Friday.

“I worry because I see the foundations of good governance eroding. Specifically, there is an erosion of transparency, independence and accountability.
“Yet these are the three foundations for creating trust between the Government and the people ... This means a robust system of checks and balances. This is what the people of Singapore want and this is what they should have - so that we can continue to hold our heads high and be proud of our system of Government.”
For example, appointments in “important positions” within the Government must be transparent and the public needs to know how these appointments are made, explained Dr Tan.

QUESTIONS ON POLICY
During the press conference’s question and answer segment, Dr Tan declined to go into further details on specific policy proposals which will be put forth by the PSP. But he said that a “broad picture” would be given by the party during their official public launch on Aug 3 at the same venue.

“We will not reveal all, that is the strategy,” he said in response to a question from CNA. “If I told the whole world what I want to do, the PAP will know everything so I have to keep some issues close to my heart and we’ll reveal it as close when the GE comes.
“But at the launch I’ll give you a broad picture of what we intend to do.”
A ‘LOOSE’ ALLIANCE
Dr Tan added that he would also be open to working with other opposition parties to form a “loose alliance”.
Said Dr Tan: “We are new but that does not mean that I cannot work with them. I would like to work with SDP, with Workers Party and with all the other smaller parties. In fact, that’s my intention.
“I’ve been approached by many of them ... whether I can take the lead to form a very loose alliance so that we can, when we come to the general election ... be a much bigger force to challenge the PAP.
“And that’s our intention. It’s difficult, there’s a lot of personalities involved, but it’s not impossible. I hope that I can convince all of them to come together.”
In doing so, the PSP will hope to avoid three-cornered fights in the next General Election, which is due by early 2021.
“We definitely want to avoid three-cornered fights, that is quite obvious. So we have to do a lot of discussions, a lot of deliberations between all the political parties.”
Ultimately, the PSP hopes to serve as a “unifying catalyst”, said Dr Tan, adding that he wants "to bring people together, from all corners of society, working towards a better system for Singapore, united by a common cause - the love of our country and our fellow countrymen and women.”

SINGAPORE: The younger brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday (Jul 28) said he “wholeheartedly” supports the principles and values of the new Progress Singapore Party (PSP).
In a Facebook post, Lee Hsien Yang added that the People’s Action Party (PAP) had “lost its way”.

“I wholeheartedly support the principles and values of the Progress Singapore Party,” wrote Mr Lee. “Today’s PAP is no longer the PAP of my father. It has lost its way,” he said, referring to Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
His comments come days after PSP’s Secretary-General Tan Cheng Bock said in a news conference that he would welcome the younger Mr Lee if he decided to join the party.
Dr Tan - a former PAP Member of Parliament - described Mr Lee as a “good friend”, noting that they have been seen walking about together.
However, he said Mr Lee would have to “adhere” to the PSP’s terms to come on board.
“Many people think that he’s coming to join me because of his own personal agenda,” Dr Tan said. “He must make clear what is his personal agenda ... If he ever joins, he must join on my terms.”
During the news conference, Dr Tan explained why he set up the PSP, saying he believed the “processes of good governance have gone astray”.

PM Lee said the PAP’s founding mission has not changed in the last three generations of leaders while his younger brother, Lee Hsien Yang feels it has stating that "Today’s PAP is no longer the PAP of my father. It has lost its way"

Contrary to his younger brother’s view that the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) is no longer the same entity it was when their father ran it, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that the party has not changed and will not change in the coming years.
The PAP was established as a political party by Lee Kuan Yew – who, as the party’s secretary-general, went on to become Singapore’s founding Prime Minister – and his colleagues in 1954. Mr Lee was succeeded by Goh Chok Tong who was succeeded by Mr Lee’s eldest son Lee Hsien Loong in 2004.
This year marks the PAP’s 65th anniversary and the 15th year since Lee Hsien Loong became head of Government. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat is expected to take over as PM once Lee Hsien Loong steps down sometime after the next election.
In a message that he wrote to mark the PAP’s 65th anniversary, PM Lee said the PAP’s founding mission has not changed in the last three generations of leaders and that this mission will “never change” even as the fourth-generation of leaders prepare to take over.
Calling on supporters to work with him and his party to “advance Singapore together,” PM Lee wrote: “Today, 65 years ago, the People’s Action Party launched on its mission to build a fair and just society, and to spread the benefits of progress widely to all.
“This mission has not changed, from our first Secretary-General Comrade Lee Kuan Yew and his team, to Comrade Goh Chok Tong and his team, to my team, and the next 4G Team. This mission will never change.”

His younger brother, however, has publicly expressed a conflicting view.
In July this year, Progress Singapore Party (PSP) leader Dr Tan Cheng Bock – a former veteran PAP parliamentarian who formed his own opposition party to push for transparency and accountability in Government – said that the PAP has changed and that it has lost its way in recent years.
Echoing this sentiment, Lee Hsien Yang – Lee Kuan Yew’s youngest child and Lee Hsien Loong’s younger brother – wrote on Facebook: “I wholeheartedly support the principles and values of the Progress Singapore Party. Today’s PAP is no longer the PAP of my father. It has lost its way.”
Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang have been locked in a bitter feud since at least 2017. That year, Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Wei Ling – Lee Kuan Yew’s middle child and only daughter – accused their elder brother of using organs of the state against them.
The younger siblings accused PM Lee of abusing his power to preserve their family home against their father’s willed desire to demolish the house, in order to bolster his grip on power, and of grooming his son, Li Hongyi, for politics.
PM Lee later cleared himself of the charges that his siblings levelled against him in Parliament and said that he does not plan to sue his siblings for their comments as that could “besmirch” their parent’s names.
Although observers noted that the younger siblings had no opportunity to speak for themselves in Parliament since they are not elected or nominated into the House, Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Wei Ling subsequently offered a ceasefire provided that they nor their fathers will be misrepresented.
Tensions between the siblings, however, did not cool after the ceasefire. The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) subsequently initiated legal action against Lee Hsien Yang’s son, Li Shengwu, over a private Facebook post and lodged a complaint against Lee Hsien Yang’s wife, Lee Suet Fern, to the Law Society.
In October last year, Lee Hsien Yang revealed that PM Lee had not made any effort to reach out to resolve matters in private. His comments followed PM Lee’s own remarks that the family feud remains unresolved and that the trio has not communicated recently.
Describing the family feud as being in “abeyance,” PM Lee said, “I’m not sure if it’s solved,” before adding that he was still saddened by the dispute over the siblings’ family home, but expressed hope that relations with his siblings will improve in future, when “emotions have subsided.”
He added: “Perhaps one day, when emotions have subsided, some movement will be possible.”
Taking issue with his brother’s words, Lee Hsien Yang hit back: “Our brother says he is unsure that the feud is solved. Notwithstanding his public statements, Hsien Loong has made no attempt to reach out to us to resolve matters in private.
“Meanwhile, the Attorney General is busy prosecuting Hsien Loong’s nephew for his private correspondence. The AGC’s letters make repeated reference to the family feud.”

SINGAPORE: Mr Lee Hsien Yang, the brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, has joined the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) led by Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

Dr Tan announced this on Wednesday morning (Jun 24) after having breakfast with Mr Lee at Tiong Bahru Market.

"I have great pleasure in giving this (Progress Singapore Party) membership card to Lee Hsien Yang," said Dr Tan, adding that Mr Lee joined "some time ago, but we couldn't communicate this".

"But now we are able to come together, and this morning we use this occasion to hand him this precious card."

Dr Tan did not confirm if Mr Lee will be contesting in the upcoming General Election.

Mr Lee told journalists that he joined PSP around "three months ago".

When asked how he would contribute to the party, Mr Lee said there were "many ways" to do so.

"I think it's not difficult to guess what ways they are; there are many ways to do it," he said.

When asked if he would be contributing financially, or whether he would appear in the PSP's campaign videos, Mr Lee said: "(If) people think it's a good idea, we can think about it."

"You'll hear (about) it quite quickly," he added.

On the national issues that had prompted him to join PSP, Mr Lee said these include income inequality, poverty, governance and transparency as well as housing.

Mr Lee, Dr Tan and some PSP members then had breakfast before they walked around Tiong Bahru to greet residents.

PSP's announcement comes a day after the Prime Minister announced in a televised address on Tuesday that he had advised President Halimah Yacob to dissolve Parliament and issue the Writ of Election.

Following this, the Prime Minister's Office announced the dissolution of Parliament, paving the way for Nomination Day to be held on Jun 30. The Elections Department announced later that Polling Day will fall on Jul 10.

In July 2019, Dr Tan said he would welcome Mr Lee if he decided to join the party’s ranks, provided he adheres to PSP’s terms.

Mr Lee, who has been seen in public with Dr Tan on more than one occasion, said in a Facebook post earlier this year said that Dr Tan was "the leader Singapore deserves".

"I have known Cheng Bock for many years and he has consistently put the interests of the people first," said Mr Lee in the post dated Jan 24, 2019.

"We are fortunate that he has stepped forward to serve Singapore,” he added.

Mr Lee, along with his sister Lee Wei Ling, has been involved in a public spat with the Prime Minister over whether the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s family home at 38 Oxley Road should be demolished in due course.

On Tuesday, Dr Tan said that PSP was interested in contesting the West Coast, Tanjong Pagar and Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituencies as well as the Hong Kah North, Marymount, Pioneer, Yio Chu Kang and Kebun Baru Single Member Constituencies.

However Dr Tan, who was answering questions from members of the media at a virtual press conference, maintained that things could change, and the final decision on the seats that PSP will contest would only be unveiled on Nomination Day.
