After dinner went to the talaat (market) to buy pak (vegetables), phonlamai( fruits for dinner and tambon[prayers]) and some dokmai (flowers for tambon).

There are flower stalls. When I first came to Thailand in the mid 90s - I thought man, these Thai guys are romantic, so much demand for flowers. Later I learned of course that people buy flowers mostly for tambon - or making merit (offerings). One way to test if your girl is really your girl is to buy flowers together or do tambon together in a wat. If she is not serious about you, she might not let you buy the flowers because it won't be her merit.

Very typical north cooking and eating style. First they lay newspapers on the floor. No tables. Then they they have big basket of raw vegetables. Then various kind of dried chillies (nam prik) and sticky rice (khao niao) and later some fruits. There is no order or courses. You eat what you want when you want.

Friends, am planning to do touristy thing of river dinner cruise in Bkk. I have done day time ferry along Chao Phraya before (dropping of at Thamassat U etc), but not makan onboard. Did some homework, and shortlisted to 2 types:

1) Tradition rice barge, with set dinner

http://www.loynava.com/welcome.html
http://www.loynava.com/gallery-photos-from-bangkok.html

http://www.manohracruises.com/

Tripadvisors plumb for Loynova

2) Modern boat type with buffet

Shangrila 1

Regular touristy 1

Personally, I'd rather go for traditional (more character) over rush job buffets

Will appreciate any feedback

Go only if you need to impress the date and/or her family.........or bringing tourists/newbie friends around.

almost all the hotels along the river will have one type or another of these cruise.....lunch cruises also available. usually buffets but they have ala carte dinners as well......experience same as cheng ho junk in singapore or bumboat dinner cruise along boat/clarke quays.

if want to experience thai cruise...a much better alternative is go up to Kanachanburi book a floating disco with a bevy of thai saos and cruise down river kwai.......

NW, thanks and I appreciate your honest lowdown. In 1st place, I'll live to regret this silly suggestion . :o

As for the latter, will enlist cronies.. and give our nong chais a treat:p

YY, if you can try to venture to the other side (Fang Ton), there is a hospital call Thaksin Hospital, and there is a restaurant behind a condo and police station call Chao Phraya Condominium. The restaurant have both boats and pier side dinning. No need to bring companion along cos' there are dining companions upon request.

Rtks, this is exactly the same style i eat when in upcountry. Last week just had such dinner only with a lot of lao ya don and 285 whisky. There are also many such dining outlets in sin city. Pm me if you are in sin city.
