POPEMOBILE FOR THAILAND’S PAPAL VISIT UNVEILED (PHOTOS)

BANGKOK — A local electric-powered Nissan will serve as a vehicle for the head of the Catholic Church when he visits the faithful in Thailand later this month.

In line with security protocols applied in other papal visits, the open-air ‘popemobile’ for Pope Francis’ trip to the kingdom on Nov. 20 to 23 will not feature bulletproof glass. A representative for Thailand’s Catholic mission said he sacrificed safety for the sake of proximity with the people.

“Yes, it’s dangerous, but he doesn’t want it because then he wouldn’t be close to the people who want to meet him,” Valith Saengthong, an official at the Catholic Social Communications of Thailand, said by phone Monday.

Valith said the Pope would still be protected by security details from local police and Pontifical Swiss Guard, albeit without their traditional gaudy uniforms.

In a June 2014 interview with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the Pope said that bulletproof glass is akin to a “sardine can” that bars him from people.

“It’s true that anything could happen, but let’s face it, at my age I don’t have much to lose,” he said.

The vehicle will bear Vatican City’s registration plate “SCV 1,” an abbreviation of the Latin “Status Civitatis Vaticanae” (Vatican City State). Popemobiles were made bulletproof only after the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II.

Official merch for the papal visit also went on sale Monday.

Supavadee “Pim” Namcharee, a 25-year-old native of Roi Et province, has become an internet sensation after her pictures and story as a delivery truck driver in the United States were shared widely on social media. While her beauty has caught the eyes of netizens, it is her background that most impresses.

After learning of her popularity online, she wrote on Facebook: “I’m glad that my fans like my story and share it widely, and hope that my success can inspire those who read it.”

“Success is not beyond your grasp if you dare to follow your dream, learn to read, think and use your reason. Try to understand others the same way you want to be understood. By doing all of this, you are already halfway on your road to success.”

Miss Thailand crowned at Miss International for first time

BINT-MISSTHAILAND-959x540.jpg

It took 59 years, but Thailand triumphed today at the Miss International beauty pageant.
Sireethorn “Bint” Leearamwat was crowned Miss International on Tuesday afternoon in Tokyo at the 59th version of the annual pageant. Bint makes history as the first ever Thai woman to hold the title.

The first runner-up was Andrea Toscano (Mexico), followed by Evelyn Namatovu Karonde (Uganda), Alejandra Vengoechea (Colombia) and Harriotte Lane (United Kingdom).

The competition this year had contestants from more than 80 countries.

Miss Philippines Patch Magtanong and Miss Indonesia Jolene Marie Cholock Rotinsulu reached the final eight; Hong Kong’s Kaye Cheung made it to the final 15.

Sireethorn ‘Bint’ Leearamwat crowned today by her predecessor Mariem Velazco of Venezuela.

SONGKHLA: A dog falling from a moving car two weeks ago is often spotted watching passing vehicles on a road in Bang Klam district of Songkhla, looking for her owner, according to her two rescuers.

Chayanan Sornsewanee, 50 and her sister Suthasiri, 63, posted messages in social media and at other agencies in Bang Klam district look for the owner of the Bang Kaew dog.

Ms Chayanan said the dog, which she named “Chao Kaew’’ fell from a moving vehicle onto a road in front of her house at night about two weeks ago. She heard the sound of car brakes and something falling at the time. She came to check and found the dog limping with injuries along the road. She and her elder sister then rescued her.

Initially, they planned to take care of the dog at their house, but the animal was afraid of their male dog and walked away, said the woman.

Chao Kaew has roamed along the road and stayed in a nearby rubber plantation. She was often spotted looking at passing vehicles, particularly white ones, every day, said Ms Chayanan. She believes it might have fallen from a white vehicle.

The two sisters recently learned that someone came to look for a dog falling from a vehicle. However, they did not meet that person as he came to wrong houses and nobody knew about the missing dog.

Ms Chananan said she and her elder sister brought food for the dog every morning and evening. They will take care of her until she reunites with its owner.

The woman urged the dog owner to contact her via mobile phone number 093-615-8291. She believes the dog would remember its owner and be happy to return home.

BoT ponders more ways to tame baht
Forex measures considered as cutting rates further is risky, says Veerathai

LUANG PRABANG, Laos: The Bank of Thailand says it is preparing to ease rules governing the foreign-exchange market and international reserves, giving it more scope to tackle the baht’s strength following a series of interest-rate cuts.

“The policy rate is low when compared with the region. … [We] will not be able to lower rates much further,” Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob told reporters, adding that negative interest rates would lead to structural problems.
Earlier this month the central bank lowered its one-day repurchase rates to 1.25%, the lowest level since the global financial crisis a decade ago.

The baht is Asia’s best-performing currency this year, rising nearly 9% against the dollar, and putting further pressure on exporters already affected by global trade tensions.

Mr Veerathai said the central bank would review foreign-exchange laws to allow greater flexibility, and to align regulations with new technological developments including digital currencies.

Outlining the central bank’s 2020-22 strategy, he said exchange-rate volatility was unavoidable because it is closely tied to unpredictable external factors.

He added that the BoT would look at ways to relax foreign reserve measures and let Thai businesses keep currencies abroad because the country already had sufficient international buffers.

Mathee Supapongse, deputy governor for monetary stability, said the central bank was also studying policies that could be deployed through non-financial institutions that would have a direct impact on the market. He did not give further details.
Mr Veerathai conceded that the central bank has limited space to deliver a “strong dose” of monetary policy.
“The key rate shouldn’t be negative, as it will create lots of structural problems,” he said.

The recent surge in the baht could be pushing the currency beyond what fundamentals dictate, and the exchange rate is likely to become more volatile, he said.
Gains in the baht and the US-China trade war have pressured the economy, which is forecast to grow by only 2.6% this year, the slowest pace since 2014.

Inflation of 0.1% in October was the lowest since June 2017, well below the central bank’s 1-4% annual target. Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana said earlier this month that the central bank has proposed to narrow the inflation band for next year to better manage monetary policy.
Mr Veerathai said inflation isn’t a big problem at present but financial stability risk has become a challenge for monetary policy.
