Pollution continues to affect Bangkok, nearby provinces

Bangkok and the surrounding provinces remained blanketed with dust on Tuesday morning, with a red zone reported in Saraburi province, north of Bangkok, according to the Pollution Control Department’s Thailand’s air quality and situation update.

Several areas in the greater Bangkok area were still covered in a fine dust of PM2.5 particulate with larger dust particles caused by emissions from vehicles as well as industrial and construction activities adding to the misery of residents.

The air quality in the western half of the capital remained very poor on Tuesday, while the eastern half had seen some improvement. The worst air quality as measured in the early morning was at Rama II Road in Bang Khun Thian district with a PM2.5 level of 108 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3).

The air quality index was orange in more than 30 zones including Sathorn, the business district of Bangkok, which had an air quality index (AQI) of 147, and Charoen Krung Road with an AQI of 170.

Orange indicates unhealthy air that will start to affect people’s health. Chaloem Prakiat in Saraburi, meanwhile, moved into a hazardous red, meaning very unhealthy air.

The orange alert stands for an AQI 101-200 while red signifies 200 and up.

A weaker high pressure over China and still air have attributed to concentration of small particulate, according to the department.
People are advised to avoid outdoor activities and many have started to wear masks again. The spike in pollution earlier this year led to a shortage of shortage of masks preventing inhalation of PM2.5 and a boom in the sale of the air purifying products.
The World Health Organisation sets the safety limit of PM2.5 at 25µg/m3, half the level of Thailand’s limit.

'Billionaire' left his 'pretty' bride with B3.5m debt

BURI RAM: The mother of a 30-year-old local woman who worked as a product presenter -- locally dubbed a "pretty" -- complained a man who described himself a billionaire left her daughter with a 3.5-million-baht debt for their luxurious wedding party.
The mother, who identified herself only as Noi, said at her one-storey home in tambon Salaeng Tone of Prakhon Chai district on Wednesday that the wedding party for her daughter Da and self-proclaimed billionaire Nut was held at a luxury hotel in Muang district of the northeastern province on May 10.

The party was lavish, an organiser was hired and the overall expenditure was 3.5 million baht, Mrs Noi said.

On the wedding day, Nut placed a cashier's cheque for 1.6 million baht as the dowry. After the wedding ceremony, the cheque disappeared and the bride's family had no idea where it went, Mrs Noi said.
Before the wedding, Noi said, her daughter brought Nat to meet her once at the funeral of her father. Da said Nut was a billionaire and had proposed to marry her. The family knew no other details of the man.

The man left without paying the bill for the wedding party, leaving her daughter to inevitably become the debtor.

Noi, who has to take care of her bed-ridden mother, said her family did not see how it could repay the huge debt.
She said her daughter sought help from an activist lawyer.

Wasant Thepnakhon, owner of Alvarez Hotel in Buri Ram, confirmed the wedding party was an extravagant affair organised by a professional team from Bangkok.

The bridegroom told him that he operated chartered flights between Thailand and Hong Kong, he said. Nut did not make any down payment for the wedding party. Hotel staff repeatedly tried to collect the 400,000-baht bill for the wedding venue, food and beverages from the man. Eventually he turned off his mobile phone, the hotelier said.

His Majesty the King has removed all the titles, military ranks and positions of Chao Khun Phra Sineenart Pilaskalayanee, as well as recalling all the royal decorations she was given, for failing to conform with codes of conduct for palace officials and being disloyal to His Majesty.
The royal announcement was published in the Royal Gazette on Monday and took effect on the previous day.

According to the announcement, Chao Khun Phra Sineenat had opposed the coronation of Her Majesty the Queen after the royal marriage on May 1, 2019. She had been openly against the ceremony, applied pressure to prevent the coronation from taking place and, driven by ambition, had tried ways and means to get His Majesty to appoint her instead, according to the announcement.

"Despite her expectations, the ceremony took place. She also breached royal authority by issuing orders involving Their Majesties’ activities."
To alleviate the problem and prevent inappropriate actions that could affect the royal institution and the country, His Majesty appointed her as Chao Khun Phra Sineenart Pilaskalayanee, read the announcement.

Since then, His Majesty has kept a close watch on her behaviour and actions and found she did not appreciate his kindness nor behave in a manner worthy of her new position. She was not satisfied with her new position and tried to act in ways that matched the status of Her Majesty.

"She did not understand royal traditions and acted defiantly towards Their Majesties. She also exploited her new position by issuing orders, pretending they were royal commands. In addition, she ordered people to comply with her personal wishes without accountability, saying she had received royal orders to act on His Majesty’s behalf."

Her actions were intended to bolster her popularity and benefit herself rather than the public interest. She did all this in the hope that His Majesty would grant her a higher position that would match that of Her Majesty.

The actions of Chao Khun Phra Sineenart disrespected His Majesty, lacked gratitude and failed to recognise royal kindness. They created rifts among palace officials and misunderstanding among the public, as well as undermine the country and the royal institution.

By the royal command granted under Sections 9 and 15 of the 2017 constitution, His Majesty relieved Chao Khun Sineenart of her position in the military division of the royal administration, revoked all her royal titles and military ranks and recalled all the royal decorations given to her.
In late August, His Majesty granted royal permission for the biography of Chao Khun Phra Sineenart to appear online at www.royaloffice.th. The information could no longer be found on Monday.

The King bestowed the title of Chao Khun Phra Sineenart Pilaskalayanee on Maj Gen Thanpuying Sineenart Wongvajirapakdi on July 28.
"Chao Khun Phra" is an ancient title for senior consorts used in King Rama VI's reign. The last consort with the title died in 1943.

What about the king's wives?

King Vajiralongkorn and his consort pose at the Grand Palace in Bangkok

He has had four wives - Princess Soamsawali from 1977 to 1993; Yuvadhida Polpraserth from 1994 to 1996; Srirasmi Suwadee between 2001 and 2014; and Queen Suthida.

The true cause of Sineenat's removal as royal consort may never be made public, given the secrecy which cloaks palace affairs in Thailand. The nation's lese-majeste law forbids any insult of the monarchy and is among the strictest in the world.

The removal of Sineenat echoes the cases of two of the King's former wives. In 1996, he denounced his second wife, who fled to the United States, and disowned four sons he had with her.

In 2014, his third wife Srirasmi Suwadee was similarly stripped of all her titles and banished from court. Her 14-year-old son has been raised by King Vajiralongkorn in Germany and Switzerland.

The King has also exercised his royal powers in a more direct way than his recent predecessors. Earlier this month, the two most important army units in the capital, Bangkok were placed directly under his command - a concentration of military power in royal hands unprecedented in modern Thailand.
