A Malaysian Airline Boeing was shot down and crashed in Ukraine.

Without a doubt Russia has supplied such weaponry to those rebels and while they are meant to be used against military aircraft these type of unfortunate accidents can happen due to a variety of reasons.

Extract from BBC, with alleged culprit machinery

An adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Herashchenko, alleges that the plane was hit by a missile fired by a Buk launcher - a Russian-made, medium-range surface-to-air missile system.

Ukraine has accused Russia's military of supplying advanced missiles to the rebels.

More damning evidence, by rebels (self?) "admission" of downing Ukrainian plane same time. Extract from news feed

But a social media site attributed to the top military commander of the Donetsk People's Republic, Igor Strelkov, said the insurgents shot down an army transporter at the exact site of the Malaysia Airlines crash. The comments suggested separatists targeted the jet in the mistaken belief it was an An-26 Ukrainian army transport plane.

"We just downed an An-26 near Torez. It is down near the Progress mine," said the VK page attributed to Strelkov
.

"And here is a video confirming that a 'bird fell'," said the post, providing a link identical to that published by Ukrainian media in reports about the Malaysia Airlines jet.

Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic", meanwhile told AFP that separatist forces would be ready to commit to a truce for several days to allow full access to the site.

The crash came with tensions already soaring after Kiev accused Russia of downing a Ukrainian military plane on a mission over the east of the country on Wednesday, the first direct claim of a Russian attack on Ukrainian forces.

Really tragic. MAS really damn suay. The ICA and UK CAA (which issued the flawed NOTAM) should take responsibility for not establishing a no-fly zone over eastern Ukraine despite repeated downing of aircraft in the region.

RIP crash victims and condolences to their families.

Re: Breaking News! Malaysian Aircraft with 295 passengers crashed! again!

Oh sorry, I just saw your post. There are many other ways to get to Europe which are further south via the Middle East viz Dubai to as far south as Saudi Arabia. The problem is airspace congestion though. There are so many airplanes plying the routes from Asia to Europe and some more from the Middle East to Europe that many of the Asian airlines fly this Soviet routing as shown on one of the map images in another post on this thread.

Not many airlines like to fly over Iran due to long exposure to high ground in case an event occurs and an emergency descent is necessary.

how many routes available from said changi to heathrow without flying over conflict zone? from the way I look at it, the east-west journey full of dangers, conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Kurdistan, Ukraine. That a Wall of conflict zones over known flight paths.

Yes yy, from the radio exchange it looks to be so.

How many of these conflicts involve SAMs ?

Re: Breaking News! Malaysian Aircraft with 295 passengers crashed! again!

Against civilan aircraft this and the Korean brought the plane down. I think somewhere in this thread someone posted a small table detailing these incidents.

At that height, the SAM battery can only see bleeps.

Looking at the number of planes sharing the same airspace, MH17 must be damn suay that the controller chose to log on to them.

It likely to be done by rebels. Chances of Ukraine shooting down the airliner is close to zero as they have all the information since the airline already filed the flight plan to the ATC. Rebels don't have such info .. having said this, this is a war zone. If it not done intentionally, then no war crime is committed. Nothing much for ICC or UN to do anything about it just like how US got away when they shot down an Iranian airliner.

Re: Breaking News! Malaysian Aircraft with 295 passengers crashed! again!

This year is 马年 (year of the Horse). Clash (本命年) with 马航 (MAS).

Another chink bullshit.

It is no more bullshit than most other theories, it is only attributed to fate. You believe what you want to believe. Everyone believes in something, it defines who you are, what you think and how you behave. Anyway, my earlier post was meant in jest.

least anyone forgot, a sam was fired by member of public during one of the airshows 2 decade back at changi. luckily it went somewhere n no planes were in sight.

Re: Breaking New - Malaysia Plane MAS Crash with 295 people in Ukraine

The final nail in the coffin for Malaysia Airlines.

Agree. Air travellers will siam taking MAS for a long, long time. Unlikely to recover imo. Half price also no takers.

Re: Breaking New - Malaysia Plane MAS Crash with 295 people in Ukraine

MH17 overbooked, someone got bumped off flight.

British family cheated death on MH17 by being bumped off flight when they arrived at check-in

A British family cheated death on Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 after they were bumped off the doomed plane when they arrived at check-in.

Barry and Izzy Sim were planning to travel to Kuala Lumpur with their young baby but were told by staff at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport that there were not enough seats on the plane.

Mrs Sim said that there 'must have been someone watching over' them as they were switched to a later KLM flight - just hours before MH17 was shot down in an 'act of terrorism'.

They were due to board the Boeing 777 aircraft which left Schiphol airport at lunchtime today. Just hours later it exploded into flames as it was hit over territory in eastern Ukraine held by pro-Russian rebels. All 283 passengers and 15 crew on board were killed.

Nine British passengers have been confirmed as among the dead.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph about his reaction to the crash, Mr Sim, from Scotland, said: 'You get this sick feeling in the pit of your stomach... We started getting butterflies. Your heartbeat starts going.'

Mrs Sim added: 'There must have been someone watching over us and saying "you must not get on that flight".'

The couple, who described themselves as loyal customers of Malaysian Airlines, said that they were 'so glad' not to have been put on the plane.

Mr Sim told the Daily Telegraph he now felt 'philosophical' about what had happened and believed that the couple should take the KLM flight.
He added that his wife does not feel the same way as she is wary of the danger of another crash.

On Thursday airlines were advised to cease flights over the region – and faced questions as to why commercial jets had been flying over what is effectively a war zone.

Last night there was speculation that flight MH17 had taken a short-cut across the disputed region of eastern Ukraine to save fuel.

Dutch authorities have said that at least nine Britons, 154 Dutch, 27 Australians were among the dead. The nationalities of 41 people on board have not been confirmed.

Earlier it was feared that 23 Americans had perished based on a Reuters report, but there has been no confirmation of any U.S. deaths since then from the State Department.
In April, the International Civil Aviation Organisation advised carriers to consider alternative routes after outlining ‘the possible existence of serious risks to the safety of international civil flights’.

On Monday, Eurocontrol – the body that coordinates all traffic across European airspace – sent out an official note to airmen, known as a Notam, repeating the warning and saying it ‘strongly advises’ avoiding the airspace.

But many carriers continued to use the route because it was shorter and therefore cheaper.

Only 3 dead Pinoys. Unfortunately.

pinoy normally fly SQ, because they have a deal to fly changi to many destination in philippine not served by other airlines.

Is this for real??

A couple who had been planning to fly on the Malaysia Airlines flight that crashed in Ukraine spoke last night of the “sick feeling” they experienced on hearing the news.
Barry Sim and his wife Izzy were told there were not enough seats on the plane for them and their baby so they switched to a later KLM flight.
Up to 10 British passengers were last night feared to be among the 295 people killed when a the Malaysia Airlines plane was apparently shot down on the Russia-Ukraine border.
Asked about his response to the crash, Mr Sim, from Scotland, said: “You get this sick feeling in the pit of your stomach [...] We started getting butterflies. Your heartbeat starts going.”
Mrs Sim added: “There must have been someone watching over us and saying ‘you must not get on that flight’.

She said: "We are very loyal to Malaysia Airlines and we always want to fly with Malaysia Airlines." She added that her husband usually disliked flying with KLM.
"But do you know what, at this moment we are so glad to be on that KLM flight rather than that Malaysia Airlines flight," she said.
Mr Sim said: "In my mind lightning never strikes twice in the same place so I am still philosophical that you get on the flight and you go about your life. I know my wife doesn't feel like that. Probably the last thing she wants to do now is fly, especially to Kuala Lumpur."
Mr Sim said he was “philosophical” about continuing to “go about your life”, saying that he believed the couple should take the KLM flight, despite his wife’s misgivings about the danger of another crash.
There were reportedly 23 American passengers, and at least four French nationals on the Malaysia Airlines flight.
Graphic images and footage showed a pall of smoke, charred wreckage and bodies at the crash scene in the rebel-held eastern Ukraine village of Grabovo.
Other photographs from the scene showed charred and mutilated bodies as well as passengers’ passports that had been recovered from the wreckage of the downed airliner.
One passport had been opened poignantly showing the photo of 13-year-old Dutch girl who is believed to be among the dead.
Images also included piles of suitcases and bags piled up at the crash scene.
Witnesses say body parts are scattered over a distance of 15km, suggesting the plane broke up in mid-air.
The upper floor of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport was closed off reserved for family and relatives of passengers on flight MH17.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who had been attending a European Union summit in Brussels, headed back to the Netherlands to deal with fallout from the crash.
Flight MH17, which was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew and took off from Schiphol airport shortly after lunchtime yesterday.
The plane appeared to have broken up before impact and the burning wreckage — which included body parts and the belongings of passengers — was scattered over a wide area.
A spokesman from the Foreign Office would not be drawn on reports that up to 10 British nationals had been on board the plane.
“We are aware of the reports and are urgently working to establish what has happened,” he said.
Asked about the reports, the spokesman added: “Our first priority is to establish if there are any British persons on board but we are not in a position to go beyond that line.”
The Foreign Office is in talks with consular teams in Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur to obtain passenger lists to establish how many UK nationals were on board.
Among those feared dead is a Dutch man who posted a photo on Facebook of the plane on the tarmac just hours before the crash.
Initially, friends commented on the photo wishing him happy holidays. But their messages turned to ones of concern once news of the crash broke.
Based on the number of flights leaving Amsterdam’s Schipol airport, and the timing of his Facebook status, it is feared he was on the fated flight.
His cousin later posted the flight number beneath the picture and shortly after friends began leaving messages saying ‘rest in peace’.
Another said that his girlfriend was on the flight with him.
A close family friend of Captain Eugene Choo Jin Leong, the captain of the crashed plane, told The Telegraph last night: “We are still holding onto hope because, up till now, no official has contacted us to let us know what has happened. All that we know about what happened is from the television.”
