Update: so yes, it was shot down.

MALAYSIAN PASSENGER JET WAS SHOT DOWN AT 10 KM ALTITUDE: IFX
While we hope it is a horrific accident, and has yet to be officially confirmed by Malaysian Airlines, the timing is oddly coincidental.

INTERFAX SAYS PLANE MAY HAVE CRASHED NEAR RUSSIA-UKRAINE BORDER
MALAYSIAN BOEING 777 MAY HAVE CRASHED IN UKRAINE: INTERFAX
The crash happened near Donetsk and the plane had 280 passengers on board. The question is - accident? Or was it shot down by Russia or Ukraine as a provocation.

The passenger jet was bound for Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, Interfax reports, citing an unidentified aviation official.

Airliner began losing altitude 50 km before entering Russian air space; wreckage was found burning on Ukrainian territory

Crash happend near Donetsk, where Ukrainian govt troops are fighting rebels: IFX

A Malaysian passenger airliner with 295 people on board crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, Interfax cited an aviation industry source as saying on Thursday.

It said the Boeing plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Reuters could not immediately confirm the Interfax

A second Malaysia Airlines plane has crashed today, this time near Russia[AP]

According to the Interfax News Agency flight MH17 was travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was downed.

It is not clear if there have been any fatalities.

The news agency claimed that the Malaysian Airlines passenger plane was shot down by Russian authorities but that has yet to be confirmed.

A Malaysia Airlines official has confirmed the plane has crashed and they are due to make a statement shortly.

It comes after a Malaysian Airlines plane carrying 239 people went missing in March while on a flight from the Malaysian capital to Beijing.

The country's government said they believed all people onboard MH370 were dead after a lengthy search in the Indian Ocean.

The plane, which had 227 passengers onboard, vanished on March 8 and despite a search costing in excess of £25million no trace of the airline has been found.

A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was reportedly shot down in Ukraine near the Russian border Thursday.
The Boeing 777 had 280 passengers and 15 crew members, Interfax reported citing an an aviation industry source.
Political tensions and violent have been high in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border.
Flight Aware shows the flight was heading from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the main international airport in the Netherlands, to Kuala Lumpur International Airport outside Kuala Lumpur, the most populous city of Malaysia.
