BUK Missile system SA11 or SA17 surface-to-Air missiles launchers can hit targets over 70,000 feet high.A few days back, a Ukraine Military Transport Antonov 26 flying at just over 20,000ft was shot down in roughly the same area. Airline operators should consider ceasing flights over Eastern Ukraine flight area....its just too risky.

Plus, pro Russian rebels have been shooting down aircraft in that part of eastern Ukraine for the past few days.

NOTAM on this route was already issued before the incident but why did they ignored the it? Can't really blame any party other than Malaysia Airline. Shit happen in war zone.

NOTAMS sometimes just advise the pilots regarding the latest developments of situations. They may give general advice in this case eg switching on all lights so that you can be seeen ( as opposed to trying hard not to be seen ) and being alert to all radio calls.

If it was NOTAMed that that routing could not be used then the flight would not have been routed along that area in the first place. There is no chance the the pilots disregarded any instructions.

What happened?
According to Malaysia Airlines, the plane departed Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at 10:15 GMT (12:15 local time) on 17 July and lost contact four hours later at 14:15 GMT - 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border. It was due to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 22:10 GMT (06:10 local time).

It had been due to enter Russian airspace when contact was lost.

Both the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian rebels who have been fighting in the region have denied shooting it down

An adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Herashchenko, alleges that the plane was hit by a missile fired by a Buk launcher - a Russian-made, medium-range surface-to-air missile system.
