Mountains - We have Mount Faber and Bukit Timah where we can talk about Nature like cicadas
Winter, Spring or Fall - We have Ice-skating rinks, Hot Spring inside an army camp, Springleaf Estate nearby....Waterfall at Bird Park
Long Rivers, Large Ponds - We have Singapore River, Pandan River, Chinese River (Sg Cina) in Sembawang and off course the sudden ponds (ponding) at orchard Road, not forgetting the many ponds under PUB where the conversation can be on bodies found floating. Maybe an aphrodisiac for better health. Vickram Nair tasted it and is still living.
Inventions - We have COE, ERP, Red-plated cars, Newater, 3/4 rule, GST and many more
Country-side - What about Tekong and Istana (out-of-bounds), Mandai and Macritchie Forest (out-of-bound too), Island Golf Club (only for the rich and famous).
History - The British days, the Japanese days, The Emergency, Merger with Malaysia, Indonesian Konfrontasi, Asahari, Nasution and the Brunei Rebellion, Harbans Singh, Vetrivelu, Sudden Death of Cabinet Minister, Abuse of Gun-Carriages.
So much to talk and cheer people up.
All this make foreigners respect us more.

5. Singaporeans lacking self confidence and communication skills

I always feel that local Singaporeans lack self confidence when it comes to their communication skills and handling difficult work situation.
Perhaps our innate lack of the spoken language has caused us to step back rather than take on someone when there is a difference in opinion.

People judge us by the way we speak and when I saw how some local Singaporeans spoke on TV interviews, it make me winched.

At work, I have seen Singaporeans as well as FTs (from China, Taiwan, Japan, India, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia) who take a step back during difficult work situations.
Conflict avoidance is not unique to Singaporeans.

Singlish does not help communications with other English speakers.
Yet informal colloquialisms or 'youknowhatitis' language exist in American English, Australian English, Japanese, Irish, etc.

Two things...upbringing and exposure.

Do you shower together with your child and teach him about your private genitals when they were young....it's taboo for Asians.
Asians emphasis mostly on don't do this....don't do that....and excel in examinations is a priority.
Europeans explain why and how it happened when the kid does the 'don't'.
They load the child with knowledge while the Asians load the child with fear.
Singaporeans not as bad as Thais....all student learned English up to uni level but they never use it among their friends.

Just curious...will the Chinese or Taiwanese disrespect foreigners who hold bad conversation in Mandarin?

Not true. The older generation can't articulate a single English word and was more garang and articulate.
