An employee will say I want a job, with 5 day week, no OT, good boss, good bonus, of course gets the most money out of it.

An employer will say I want to find a worker who is capable, no skirting off work, hardworking, of course gets the least pay.

How many of you here who despise foreign talent and if you have to employ a maid, will you employ a $400 foreign maid or will you employ a $1400 local singaporean maid?

I dun despise foreign talent...but only :o at fake foreign talent.
Foreign talents are really skillful in their own trade..say Sam Leung for his cooking skills or Olivia Lum, CEO of Hyflux..

But fake FTs are just grads from poly/uni...where they have no working experience, neither do they have xcellent sch grades.
All they need to do is signing the 3 yrs working bond...and started off with a lower pay...is consider Foreign talent?

For instance..2 candidates, both from the same local uni, same grades
1 is singaporean and the other is foreigner.

Local quote for 2.2k and foreigner ask for only 1.8k...
At the end of the day.....it is the lowest wages that win the race.
What attitude? What skills set?

The saddest fact is people like to link foreigners to the term 'foreign talent'. They like to associate 'foreigners' as 'foreign talent'. And now any foreigners who take up a job in singapore, people will start saying foreign talents are taking away the jobs of locals.

If you are a boss of a restaurant, if a local wants $1200, a foreigner wants it at $800, you only need a person who can cut meats. I am sure majority wants the one with the lower wage, if both can complete the tasks given. You ask a local will he want to do it with $800, he will tell you, he wouldn't.

The local job seeker says $800 he can't survive, but to a self-employed owner, or maybe anyone of you, will you increase your deficit to employ someone local and more expensive which eats into your takings?
This is a fact, if any of your employer is going broke, the first thing all employees want to know is whether they can get their last paycheck. The last thing on their mind is will their employer go bankrupt.

Survival of the fittest is too harsh a word, I would say every man has to prioritise think for themselves first before thinking for others.

You raise a most comprehensive discussion that covers almost all the bases, but the thing to be asked as well in everyone's analysis is: are the work ethics of foreign workers better than locals?

I agree. The many views expressed here are valid but we may be talking at cross-purposes and talking in the extremes.

Any sane employer is going to operate with lowest cost model. Its pointless for employer A to hire locals at a higher costs and compete against Employer B who hires cheaper FT.

This is where the Govt has to regulate the market to allow a level playing field. Common sense will dictate that no govt will disenfranchise its own people by allowing work for FT with locals going jobless. Singapore unfortunately is a single party and the common man in the street seems to get stepped on.

My aim is at the big boys like the GLCs as employers rather than small time employers who are sole proprietors or owner operators that have their own personal capital at stake which is usually the family home mortgaged.

Anyway the "attitude" of Singaporeans is an excuse which to me carries little weight. Do you expect Singaporeans to grovel to an employer such because he got a job. He certainly will if he has to get a huge loan from a moneylender, hog the family house and travel a thousand miles and badly needs a job to pay off the debt. Failing which his family back home will be harmed.

The story of Prima is a classic case of paying a hefty price for blindly taking on FTs without addressing the attendent problems. Its common knowledge that PRC toilet habits are notoriously unhygenic. Imagine tracing the contamination to fecal matters from one employee.

In essence there has to be balance. At times like this, there has to be better understanding of unemployed singaporeans and not harp about "attitudes" of Singaporeans. I found "Besotted" reason for hiring the FT based on skills assessment valid but not replacing Singaporean taxi drivers with FT. I often take taxis to and from the airport and but they seem quite normal to me. They also seem to be better educated and better mannered than before.

Fact on fact, not trying to disagree with you. But is there any source to say that the contamination is linked to any PRC worker? Locals themselves may not have personal hygiene as well.

Seriously you ask me, certain tasks locals will not want to do, so how? We do it ourselves? If jobs are only opened to locals, the locals will start coming in and say, 'haha, you can only employ people like us, if you don't employ me, no one wants to do your dirty job. This is the pay I want, the pay you offer is too little'

the question you asked is not wrong, are the work ethics of foreign workers better than locals, I can only answer you, the work ethics of locals are no much better than the foreign workers.

It was in the papers and the source identified to one particular individual - a PRC employed in the kitchen..

The truth is...local employers don't want to waste time on training.
They want ready experienced employees to do the job and yet depress the wages for it.

Using FTs an excuse, locals have no choice...but to bite the bullet and take on the job. Got to feed the family.

And that is one of the reason why NUS grad is willingly to take up 1k salary as a hotel receptionist...thinking that her receptionist job will helps in her career.

The truth is ....everyone just wanna save cost, maximise their profit margins.
dun give the crap....what good attitude, what skills set edge over the other.

Just be honest and say....
"I want more profits."

Simple and sweet.
Don't beat around the bush.

 :p

I can't agree more with your post. In fact I've heard so many cases when bosses who refuse to let employees their upgrade skills because it might threaten their position...!

Basically local employers (including MNCs) are damn stingy on employment costs - be it pay, benefits, leave, training etc... The FT policy is a dream come true for them.

The passenger attitude also need improvement, stop demanding.
The taxi driver job is to take you to your destination safely nothing else.

Hope you can improve your attitude as well .

Remember, there is good and bad taxi drivers which I personally experienced myself.

By the way, please let me know your restaurant business address, I wish to test your foreign so-called talent worker skill and attitude.

it is generally clear the pap is too liberal using cheap foreign labor to depress local wages... aka bending backwards to please the foreign companies in singapore...

It is bad vision on the pap part... they are too arrogant to see that global economics are going to wither out manufacturing in red dot.. so when the inenvitable happened.. they simply flood the job market with cheap foreign labor as an incentive for foreign companies...

This anti-citizen policy also enables the pap to keep govt service costs up... at the expense of the people...

The pap is not effective anymore... whats more ironic is their decades of illiberal democracy have wiped out potential opposition alternatives...

The heated cauldron of frustrations are brewing... the people are afraid of the pap and venting their frustrations on each other... with one eventually 'firing' his MP...

The pap is going to implement more draconic laws against assault on its party members.. there are going to be more violent isolated incidents with the eventual explosion of social disorder...
