SINGAPORE: A 19-year-old student from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has died after the Premier taxi she was in collided with a car on Thursday night (Apr 19).

The accident happened at the junction of Clementi Road and Commonwealth Avenue West. Authorities said they were alerted to the incident at about 7.30pm.

Four taxi passengers - all NUS students - and two drivers were taken to National University Hospital, where the woman died of her injuries.

One student is seriously injured, while the other two are in stable condition, said an NUS spokesperson.

A video of the crash that has been circulating on social media shows the impact of the accident throwing a woman partially out of the taxi's window.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said a man who was trapped in one of the vehicles had to be extricated using hydraulic rescue tools. It is understood that he was one of the students in the taxi.

NUS said in a statement on Facebook that it was "deeply saddened by the accident".

"University staff and counsellors are in touch with the family and friends of the four students involved to provide support and assistance," it added. "Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time."

Responding to Channel NewsAsia's queries, Premier Taxis said it was "aware of the unfortunate incident".

"We are extending our support to the relevant parties. However, the case is still under investigation thus we are unable to comment at this point in time," said a spokesperson.

Investigations are ongoing, said police.

The other driver is going straight, right of way.
Taxi is turning, he can move only when coast is clear or green light in his favor.
KNN basic traffic junction rule for safe driving.
1. turning vehicle only turn when is 100% sure is safe .1% unsure stay put don't be pressured by vehicle behind horning.
2. straight going vehicle at 3rd arrow need to release accelerator and foot standby on brake.

Taxi assumed the road was clear since he was following and partly shielded by the car that was turning right at the same time (but different lane). But he could not accelerate fast enough. And I agree, when approaching a congested junction, always good to slow down and standby to brake. Such a senseless loss of life in this accident.

Cost cutting by Comfort, no air bags. Only fitted with seat belt. Usually back passengers forget to buckle up.

In all my years working at the ED I have yet to see a fatality in a car accident where the injured were wearing seatbelts.

It is always the ones who were not wearing seatbelts that get serious injury or die.

KNN this is a deadly assumption done by many drivers to trust the other vehicle too much. some pedestrians also like to make same assumption and trust when see vehicle turn and is safe for them to cross and covered by the turning vehicle in case of goondu straight coming vehicle KNN

The approaching car was speeding. Way too fast. The driver should be charged for speeding and manslaughter.
