Why are the parents thanking the teachers and not the students? What would the students be thinking about their parents thanking their teachers for teaching them? Something is not right? It is the duty of the teachers to teach, if a student shows appreciation, jolly well, it will be kinda...

The parents will probably be called up during Parent-Teacher-Meeting session and got lectured on how distracted his son is blah blah blah, maybe even recommend to see counsellor ... then maybe go see psychiatrist .... then maybe confirmed problem kid .... then migrate, made good his studies...

You are making this assumption because of your experience and your experience is 'unique' to you because you happened to be working in an American MNC. So your assumption is not wrong but that does not mean it is the only way to advance in one's career. At least I know some bosses who do not...

I think more like the people nowadays have lost the ability or skill to interact face-to-face so when they don't have things to do, best excuse is to 'get connected'.
